Didn't get a response last thread, but I'm thinking of building a kind of Voltron/Power Rangers inspired combiner MOC. Are there any decent creators or MOCs that have gone along with that idea before? I'm trying to find some inspiration to see what's worked for people.

DrScorpionX did that a lot, you should be able to find his vids easily. Most of them are kinda bad other than the connection points themselves, though. But once you figure out how to make reasonable connection points that stay solid when together and only pull out one way (like a 3 long axle with stopper with a piece in its way being plugged into an axle hole, you can use a setup like that to make a connection that will never swap from one half of the moc to the other) then you should be golden.

Also, you could look at the Uniters for connection inspiration, as those were really nicely built imo. Brickinstructions has all of their instructions on there readily available.

Good ideas going, I'd forgotten about DrScorpionX after all of this time. I know his stuff wasn't perfect but it could be a point of reference to start from.
My idea right now is to be able to hide the connection points or implement them in an unobtrusive format. I'll have to mess around when I get the chance.

The way I'd end up doing that is just making a simple cover with one of the connection points available and just put it on a couple hinges that let it stay out of the way when you need to open the connection points. Bonus: you only have to do it to half of the connection points (so if you're doing a megazord-esque one with a central body and four other mocs for the arms and legs, just put flaps over the connections on the central one, because the female connection points on the arms and legs will already look good.)

Alternative: slight transformation that means a male and female connection point on one figure doubles as connection points for the other component mocs in the megazord form. (like opening a T rex head to reveal its connection points and then those connection points let you connect the arms)

also you can look at some real transformer and combiner toy reviews to see what they do for engineering. That really improved my mocing.

The first idea of covering the connection points will probably be something I'll use as a test to get the idea going. Ideally I'd have something more along the lines of your latter concept, hiding connections within the transformation of the figure.
I'll have to take a look at those other toys though, that's a great idea. I hadn't considered that before but they'd be the best to learn from for this.

Here’s some modifications I did for G2 Lewa. Adjusted the color pallet with removing the yellow and added more gunmetal, and added the arm blades to make the transition to gliding mode look better. Also changed the axe blades and used the second g2 mask cause I think it looks sleeker. Feedback welcome.

I don’t like the chest piece of the uniters personally, I feel they’re a bit too long and awkward. I did manage to incorporate the back part of the uniter into the back of the masters torso so he can still connect with the beast thing if he wants to. Plus I don’t have the full team of uniters, but I do with the masters. I like both his mask options but I like the uniter mask more for 2 main reasons, it’s slimmer and more “bird-like” in my opinion. And I like the gradient into the silver cause I think it’d be too green overall without it. But point taken, I’m glad you and >>7894851 like the feather blades

For those of you who might not be familiar with Wall of History, it's an online archive/compilation of the G1 story, and has ALL the G1 story content in its original form.

Apparently it was a she in one early MNOG draft. And she was originally called Akamai and the Tahu-Pohatu-Onua combiner was Wairuha, but then the names got switched for some reason and they changed her pronouns too.

Akamai literally means intelligence, wit, or wisdom and Wairuha actually means spirit, as in one's willpower.
But the name association is so ingrained in me that I can't possibly imagine their names switched back at this point. Akamai as a name sounds more courageous, Wairuha as a name sounds more mystical. It totally makes sense to me why they were mixed up in the first place.

Idea behind the Witch is that she uses whatever the golden skull mask does to do, I dunno, witchy necromancer stuff I guess.
Terror is just some vaguely saurid monster with a tail arm and no other kind of arm. He looks better than he photographs.

If this Russian article is correct, the original lore reason was that Kaita are something unique that can only be formed in special chambers. But that was never confirmed canon since the 01 game didn't come out. This was also back when there were only supposed to be six Toa.
After that, Kaita lost their original "mystique" and were reduced to just a thing any three Toa could do at any time and other creatures could too. They weren't important to the story anymore since they already fulfilled their role in 2001, so Greg just kept ignoring them after 2003 without thinking of any in-lore reasons other than some Toa didn't know how to do it.
Just like Kapura's fast travel or the Nuva cube, Kaita were probably the brainchildren of the higher ranking concept creators that weren't properly explained in the story bible, which is why Greg didn't know what to do with them either. That's the answer he gives to a lot of things from the 01-03 lore. "I didn't make it up, so I dunno."

Greg appeared in another fan podcast laying out info. I'll spare you the pain of listening to it and list some stuff he said. Some of these were already known but whatever.

He repeated his famous stance on writing by never planning ahead. He learned story structure from comics and radio serials. To him, knowing how his story ends is like watching a movie twice. He gets bored and loses interest, so he randomly introduces new ideas to surprise himself. Like Karzahni wasn't meant to appear in that '06 book, he came up with it midway through writing it. He also wrote one of the Bionicle books (he can't recall which) backwards, by writing the ending first and the opening scene last because he wanted a challenge.
One of his main grievances with writing for Bionicle was the low bodycount compared to his earlier books. He and his former publisher loved hyper violent edgy shit. His ex-wife called one of his pre-Bonkle novels the most unpleasant book she ever read because everyone dies or goes mad at the end.
The Avtoran turning into Bohrok was his idea, it wasn't in the story bible. He only did it cause he wanted to write something creepy.
Multiple Makuta weren't part of the original plans either, the story team came up with it gradually because it made sense to have more than one Rahi-maker in the universe.
The people brought back on the Red Star would have decayed over time, meaning they would be dead anyway.
The 2009 shift to Bara Magna happened because the Lego bigwigs firmly believed no one was following the story and no one would notice the change. Greg questioned why change the setting if they believed no one cared, but everyone ignored him.
He wrote the later serials with his daughter sleeping in his lap. She's not into Bonkles.
When he asked if he could wrap up the serials in preparation for G2, his bosses didn't answer.
When he asked if he could work on G2, his bosses told him he already did G1, no need to "prove himself" again.

This is weird considering how much the 2009 story ended up focusing on Mata Nui’s exile anyway. Did the execs really just want to have a pure Glatorian storyline? Would have been bolder I guess.
And I can’t say it wouldn’t have worked definitively because I remember Raid on Vulcanus and some of the serials being way more fun than anything TLR-related, but still, seems like a risk to drop all connections to the past story rather than all but one.

I imagine all of this would be being discussed way earlier than when it happened, so if they had gone in that direction they would have probably accounted for that and just had him involved and defeated in 2008. They could have just renamed Icarax’s set, say instead of fucking back to Metru Nui Teridax just went down the hole and was just around in Karda Nui too (say the other Makuta brought a spare body for him or whatever). The higher ups may not have cared but the people working more closely on the story probably would have.

Unless you count Bob Thompson, Christian Faber and Advance, Alastair Swinnerton, Templar Studios, Ghost and the toy designers. Greg only came in after the groundwork was already there, and got to work on the comics and books almost purely by chance because he wasn't part of Lego's original plans. He's not similar to Lucas in that he was the original creator, he's similar to him in that he would also have needed others to veto his ideas and meld them into a presentable whole. Sadly they both lacked that, Lucas had way too much control over SW after the original films and Lego didn't care about Bionicle as a story and let Greg do whatever.
Lucas kinda strikes me as a visionary who put way too much thought into a world, its themes and a story he wanted to tell without knowing the intricacies of how to tell it in a non-retarded way. Greg wasn't into telling well rounded stories or having themes, he was more into playing around with a host of characters and putting them through a series of events, and he did too little thinking if anything.

If I remember correctly, when I put Inika Jaller together for the first time, one of his sockets broke. Now they are all broke, not unusable but broken regardless. It's weird cause this never happened with Matoro, Takadox nor Nocturn. despite them having transparent sockets too.

Greg has said multiple times that Bionicle is a story where almost nothing works the way it should. This is how he came up with the "zombies on a space station" plot that went nowhere. What if the Red Star malfunctioned and revived the dead wrong, and also didn't send them back? That line of thought was the reasoning behind Vakama's visions too. He was just made wrong, but he used it to his advantage.

He was barely in the comics. Only showed up on a couple panels and had like two lines. The incapable dumbass Sidorak was mostly an invention of the movie. Before the movie, he was shown as an okay leader who spent too much time commanding the spiders to realize Roodaka wanted to overthrow him.

The point is that he didn't fall victim of Roodaka's manipulation because he was dumb, rather because he had a whole different way of doing things than she did. Randomly simplifying character personalities to fit into more stereotypical cartoon archetypes happened to a number of other characters, not just the villains. Onua is both strong and smart? Can't have that, lets make him strong but dumb. Lewa is kind of an immature jerk? But he's green and lives in a forest, lets make him a spiritual Indian-hippy. That makes it easy to showcase their personalities with a couple simple lines, even if it comes at the expense of canon consistency.
At least the other Nuva were okay, but much like Tuma, I can't reconcile Onua and Lewa from the movie being the same characters as Onua and Lewa from other media.

Greg's comments about how he likes to write made me realize how much his quote from the '03 guidebook rings true. He wasn't telling stories with a defined point to them, he was just playing around, with the partial intention of amusing himself. Because he got bored if he knew how his story would end.
He would also compare his writing style to radio dramas by Orson Welles. He argued that Welles never read his scripts before reading them out loud, which made his delivery much more genuine, so not knowing where Greg's own story would go made his writing much more genuine as well. Of course the major hole in this argument is, Welles' scripts were handed to him by other people who probably had at least some sort of idea about how they'd play out. He wasn't the one writing them, he didn't have to think about plot and character consistency or universe rules, he just read others' stories to an audience.

All of this makes me wonder, where would the story of G1 have gone if helmed by even a marginally better writer? What would have been handled differently? Recently I’ve been reviewing the entire story of G1 to see what I missed when I was actually collecting bonkles, and man is it frustrating sometimes.... In some ways we lucked out with Greg. He was one of the few who saw potential in the franchise. If he hadn't got hired (and it was basically through chance that he got to do the comics and the books), we might have ended up with some random schmo who wrote stories on a kindergarten level.
But if we had gotten someone with Greg's earnest dedication but better skills at plotting and characterization, the basics of the story probably wouldn't have changed a lot, since he never "helmed" the story. It was a group effort where he filled in the blanks in the books and comics and made some suggestions that were at times ignored. That's one of the main things about Bionicle, it was always the work of a jumble of changing writers adding their own spin to the story at various times. Templar worked on it for a while, Thompson dictated the plot and tone for a time while Faber established the world, Swinnerton left pretty early on, Hapka came and went and did low effort work, then there were the movie guys with their own changing writing teams (even Greg Weisman worked on MoL but got fired due to a random mishap), and of course Greg. And the Lego execs who had about zero understanding of the story had a say in it too, like when they forced the team to make up a 2005 story from scratch or moved the setting to a different planet.
It's a miracle that the story had worked in any way with so many cooks shitting in the pot. I imagine Greg played a huge role in tying all the stuff thrown into the story bible into a borderline coherent thing, cause he was the one interacting with fans the most and he realized the line had a dedicated reader base. It's just that when he was left to his own devices, he didn't want to plot for shit and poured his own random ideas into the lore unchecked.

I agree, Bonkle was a fun ride but a messy one. It's a toy line that had to be rushed out the door after all. The story would need some rewrites and polish to fully work as its own thing.

I've been having a lot of luck with finding some Bionicle's at thrift stores recently and found pic related. The box is slightly damaged because whoever owned this set beforehand didn't take them apart before putting them in the box, but both the sets themselves, the instructions, and the promotional materials were all in damn near perfect condition. I haven't tested the electronics yet, but I imagine they'll work fine. Overall, it's probably the best 10 bucks I've ever spent.

I guess it depends on a lot of things. If you're quick about finding sets and grabbing them before someone else does, like I've been doing, then you can amass a collection pretty quickly as long as you look around different thrift stores often. Although of course since I've been finding these at thrift stores there's been some times where's I'd find sets that either have some broken/missing parts or just didn't come with any instructions at all (Which would be a real pain in the ass if it weren't for the internet having them all online). I've also had times where some sets were taped closed so I couldn't really know if all of the parts were there until I bought it and brought it home, and for some people that may not be worth the hassle. The prices at these thrift stores are usually set lower than they should be since they can apply to a bunch of different used toys that could either be broken or missing parts makes me think that they probably lowball the prices just to play it safe.

Much more interesting than the final products. It helps that they have some very eye-popping color schemes, unlike the very simple "transparent color + silver/gunmetal" of the final sets (which lacked any real contrast). But they sported some rather unusual and original weapons, as well, instead of your average blades and axes.

That is not why they fracture. If that were the case you could move the joints at all without it instantly fracturing. They fracture because the plastic on the lips is really thin. Thats the reason why the 05-07 version has less of a tendency to fracture. The plastic on lips is weak as shit and the force of you snapping it into place is applying pressure. You can also cause it fracture by applying pressure by bending it too far one way. Sitting isn’t going to break it. I’ve done extensive experiments on this shit.

Any temperature besides 16-24°C for a prolonged time weakens the plastic, but the thing that I found causes the most irreversible damage is sunlight (even indirect) they shatter like fucking sand after a fes months
Nothing ever melts tho, compared to cheaper plastic like mega blocs which has a melting point of about 50°

The whole thing is the socket, and either type has the capacity to break at the end and retain some friction or break at the side and be irreparably fucked. The difference is that while the '08 socket retains more friction when split (maybe a plus to you) it has a tendancy to split way, way more often than the '05 version thanks to the thinner design. Maybe it's more reusable on average, but it's fucking ugly I might as well just replace the part anyway. Or just use the alternative which splits less often.

Unless you count certain misprints or prototypes I guess, those exist physically but were not easily available to the public. The movie-Kraahkan has a real-world reasoning behind it rather than a lore one, although I guess you could pretend it's one of the many forms Makuta took.
I can't remember where I heard this, only that someone who worked at Lego for a while mentioned it in a podcast years ago, but allegedly Lego produced a fully chromed set of one character, mask included. It might have been a Toa Metru, but again I don't recall. That had no lore behind it either, they just wanted to see how much it would cost. Apparently one of the workers received it as a gift when he left.
Then there's also the platinum Mask of Light.

Every single 06-07 set I’ve bought of ebay had cracks. 90% of the 05-07 style double connectors I’ve bought off bricklink have hairline fractures, or developed them after connection. By comparison only a quarter of the 08 connectors I bought off bricklink got hairline fractures.

Whats worse is that every i got several piraka (all of these sets from various reputable sellers and otherwise were pristine) with horizontal breaks. Hell, The Brutaka I got (again, mostly pristine) had one of those blue rubber joints hairline fracture, so ai had to replace it with a spare krekka one; older but still fine.

I also had a Matoro mahri and takadox with fractured joints.
