the crane/cannon hanging off the bottom of the arm of that mold like a tumor was bad design. Turning it with the kibble panels on the bottom and cannon on the side would have looked better, at least with Inferno. It's because of Kira that my headcanon for Rook is that he is the gentlest and most heroic Protectobot, but that the Protectobots initially don't trust him because of how much of a model soldier he is until they learn that he is that way because he is just as determined as them to help end the war and rescue people/robots in danger.

Soul is not being beholden to a 40-year-old cartoon whose designs weren't even consistent with itself.

I get G1 is what sells, but the brand needs to evolve. The Gen Xers that grew up on the G1 cartoon are about 10 years away from being grandparents. They're not the target audience anymore.

This is the bullshit reason I think they do it for too, it's an appeal to stupid nostalgia that thinks these are somehow quality materials when in reality, it is a complete downgrade in every way.
Also I'm pretty sure it's the type of plastic that was used on the Transmetals line where they put the vacuum metalized surface on. It has some "strength" but no flexibility whatsoever, so it's very bad for joints, hinges, and anything that endures stress.

You know what's a good fun toy? This Combiner Wars mold. It's well articulated, a breeze to transform back and forth between all its molds, and full of character. It got repainted in a ton of decos too, so there's a color scheme that suits anyone's tastes. I think it may be one of the best Transformer toys ever made.

Both molds look great to me. I've got the hot spot repaint of grapple (always wanted the inferno mold, but couldnt find it and that hot spot repaint was DIRT CHEAP), and I preordered the new grapple, they can coexist as different characters on my shelf that way.

Where I live the cops are bums who write tickets all day and make the FBI, ICE, customs and ATF do all the real raids and policing. We had a guy shoot up a walmart in the busiest part of town and he killed over 20 people and just walked out because the police had over a 6 minute response time even though they have a budget in the millions. I have a lot of patients that are cops. They are bummy dudes that just sit in their car or motorcycle and just sip on stimulants all day and their teeth turn to shit. Fiddling with them a bit, Blackarchnia is the coal. Even ignoring the spider mode taking a hit, she just doesn't feel as fun as Bumblebee to me. But I guess a large part of her appeal is a love of the character (which I don't have), so the flaws of the mold aren't masked by some misguided love of Beast Wars. Bumblebee's pretty nice though. Not perfect, not by any means, but he's not hitting the lows BA is hitting for me. I think she might be the worst Masterpiece, if we ignore the initial ten.

Naval alt-modes are actually my jam though, was excited for Alpha Trion's inevitable retool, just for the aircraft carrier mode, which by definition has to be more or less a brick. It's the strongest mode for both figures so I'm glad.

Basically how it's the form of animation where the character designs are these character shapes with the detail drawn onto them, they lack depth and feel like they're lying about the transforming robotic function they're meant to have. The toys actually look a lot better just because they do have that element of depth and there's actually a considerable difference in structure between the animation and toy designs. Although I still don't really care for a lot of the stylisation, and I'll be honest the chins look awful.
I guess I'm the sort of person that prefers Transformers 3DCG because it conveys that physical depth better.
