I came across this online randomly. They're supposed to be drawing mannequins for artists, but they look more like a blank figma or SHFIguart. Does anything about these? Is it a legit product or just some bootleg?

It's 100% a bootleg Body-Kun. I got one as a gift. For the price if you want something to fiddle around with on your desk, it's not bad.

The torso on mine is improperly glued and is splitting a little on one side, but I could probably fix that if I really wanted to.

My issues with it stem from the original design itself, like the bafflingly limited backwards leg movement, or the limited one-way ankle tilts.

There's actually a website called "bodykunart.com" and another called "bodykundolls.com". These are the first things that come up when you Google "body kun"

Both are just to sell bootleg body kuns to artists or whoever wants them, but don't know they're buying bootlegs at retail price.

I appreciate the hustle, but they're just lucky that their products aren't the super shitty bootleg kind.

I guess when you don't have to worry about paint you can just focus on joints and making it sturdy?

They've KO'd the box pretty exactly too. I don't own the official one but it looks to have all the right trademarks and logos. It looks a bit too inkjet-ish if you know what I mean.

nah, the bootlegs are complete shit. the joints are loose in weird places, sometimes the limbs are not symmetrical, weird fit and scale.

I think that's why I never jumped on the online ordering thing. There is still value in shopping and looking at the physical things you buy in person, specially pricey toys.

The only thing I've ever ordered online is some AAAA batteries, which are not available in my country.

But yeah, if you are an artist that wants poseable reference, TBLeague/Phicen are better, and its not bootleggable, since its made by chinks already and the 2019 ones have heads included, finally

so, would getting a legit SHFiguart Bodykun be the best option, or is there a better high articulation "generic" figure?

I recommend buying Phicen/tbleague.I can only recommend figma archetypes or body-kun/body-chan if you are familiar drawing with knees and elbows.

artists I know have phicens. the only problem they have with it is the little janky proportions

I honestly find the seamless figures an even worse trap for drawing then the body kind and archetypes. It's much harder to see the inherent flaws in the figure then something more like a mannequin, mannequin let's you just use it for the basic form structure of a pose and then fill in the blanks on your own.

A combination of mannequins and nude life art references are probably the best choices for the amateur artist. If you can get to an actual life drawing session somewhere that is the absolute best option but can be unlikely to find those depending on location.
