True, but it was also when minifigs peaked, every profession had 3 different torso patterns, but they were still simple. There was a variety of prints for every kind of face too, women faces, moustached faces, everyday clothes and so.

The head and torso isn't too bad, good for a monochrome white minifig and the head is good for using on the older ghost minifigs instead of a black head

If anything you would want to use a superior version at the very least to at least give people a good impression to side with you on the matter. I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to say or prove here, unless you are siding with me, because that seems like the most probable scenario right now. For instance, in my post, I posted the superior version of the ghost (2012). In fact, not only did I post just one, I posted multiple, as to increase the chances of bringing fellow anons to my side. If I wanted to dissuade people from joining my cause, I would have posted another variant of the Lego Ghost (such as the 2020 version).

Depends. Brother's brick is cool because they actually provide instructions on most of their creations, so if you see something you like or want to recreate, usually it will have the build guide. If not, sometimes it will come eventually. Other than that it's mainly just image hosting sites.

Greetings LG!

I am happy to announce a new contest that I will be hosting – The Great Lego Space Quarantine contest of 2020. I’ve had this idea for a while but considering the whole coronavirus situation and since we’re mostly stuck inside now, I don’t see a better time than now to do it.
The core concept is this: Design your own Space Theme. General guidelines are pretty loose, make something that could have served as a Space faction for LEGO in the late 80s and early 90s.
If you need inspiration and a sort of guide you can have a look at existing space themes from that period – Futuron, Blacktron, Ice Planet 2002, Exploriens, etc.

The rules:
1.Each participant may submit one build as an entry to the contest. A timestamp of your creation and the email I will then use to get in contact with you will be required if you end up winning.
2.Modern parts and complex building techniques are allowed but the end result should look like something that could fit in with original sets and themes from that period. The idea is not to try to give the guys at Neo Classic Space a run for their money but instead attempt to do what the guys building the Space set prototypes from the 80s and 90s did.
3.Bonus points are awarded if the builds are stable and have play features (although these are not hard requirements they will help your build leap/zoom/swoosh ahead of the competition).
4.A submission consists of one build of medium size and larger. That means very small builds do not qualify. There is no limit to how big you can go but this is not Shiptember. The emphasis should not be on number of parts but rather on the overall result.
5. Adding lore and backstory to your submission is strongly encouraged. Heck you can even make boxes and put the sets inside if you’re autistic enough. More effort is always better.
6. Digital builds are allowed but will start off with a severe disadvantage when judged.

Examples of sets that would qualify to enter the contest in terms of size: 6876 – Alienator, 6848 – Strategic Pursuer (although just barely), 2965 – Hornet Scout. Bigger sets are fine.
Examples of sets that would be too small to qualify as entries: 3072 – Megatax, 1620 – Astro Dart.
Prizes: A prize pool of roughly 200USD will be split amongst 3 winners. Depending on how many people sign up there might be honorable mentions. Two of the winners will be chosen by me based on my own biased opinion. To make things more “fair” a third winner will be selected from the remaining submissions by a random draw.
Timeframe for submission: Until May 18th, 14:00 PM. After that I’ll be taking 1-2-3 days (depending on how many sign up) to judge and announce the winners.
Note: I initially wanted to keep the prizes physical – but with the situation being what it is, shipping is very difficult. Also, different people enjoy different things and I think each winner is better off getting something they like (or need in these times of crisis) than receiving something arbitrarily picked by me that might or might not be relevant to them.
This is my first time hosting a contest, suggestions and help (mostly regarding a banner/picture that contains this information) are greatly appreciated. I will answer questions and provide other clarifications as needed. I will spam the contest just once per thread until the submission period is over.

How fucking hard is it to be consistent. LEGO is so much better at it.

so I bought one of these 8x8 drawer deals from Amazon and just started organizing my most common parts so I won't be keeping all my Lego in giant ziplock bags anymore...

Is pic related how you guys do it? I have only put the black pieces in these drawers and already am running out of space on the 2x4 brick and 2x4 slope ones.
Why is organizing Lego so much fun? At first I thought you anons who said not to organize by color were crazy, but I get a big kick of having the same part in two different color together.

His appreciation for the art of lego, and in the video I'm watching the importance of color composition make him pretty enjoyable. His voice has a little tinge of the 'tism, but not the nasally uncomfortable type from something like BrickVault that makes me not want to watch it.
Anyway what I wanted to say is I really fucking love/hate Ninjago.
It's a great thing that LEGO has made a long-running theme that is able to keep the company afloat without being licensed, without being over priced, with interesting and varied builds, and a boatload of creativity, but god I just do not care about ninjas, ninja aesthetic, or anything of that sort. The spirit of Exo-force definitely lives on in Ninjago, and the mech builds mechanically are top notch, but GOD I just do not fucking want to pay for ninjas.

If that works for you, good. It all depends on how much pieces of what kind you have and what sort of storage. For example I have way too many 1x2 bricks to fit in one of those drawers so they're off in a box of their own, with a smaller box for special 1x2 bricks. All 1x4 and 2x4 plates and bricks are in another box, but it's a large flat one so easy to look through.

Mario sets come with pre applied stickers. Stickers on mushroom represent the mushroom. Stickers on goomba represent goomba.

You need to be careful with stickers from water and abrasion as their wont be replacements and you can’t switch a goomba sticker on a mushroom and vice versa because each sticker has a unique barcode for its respective piece

Mario can naturally read and register coins when walking on red, green, and blue base plates so no stickers needed for them

I'm supposed to be studying, and I am, but I'm also allowing myself to get distracted with silly things.
So I was wondering why lego went from the 6 x 2 1 1/3 pullback motor to the 6 x 2 x 1 2/3 motor. I have two of them in front of my right now because I've been trying to use them, and I decided to give them a test. From loose at the 3 o-clock position I started winding until the ratchet disengaged. The 1 1/3 brick was fully wound after 10 rotations around its axle. The 1 2/3 was wound after about 8 1/2 windings. Upon letting the wheels go without load the 1/3 ran for about five seconds, whereas the 2/3 ran for about seven.
Now that's a pretty good increase in power. ~1 1/2 windings means that a kid does not need more room to pull it back, and the increase in duration obviously means the toy could be used for much longer.
However this is more or less in a vacuum. I'm not testing these with a load on them, on the ground, with friction and drag acting against the spring. I do not think these are hugely going to affect the findings, but just something to make not of.
That said of course the 2/3 is a whole plate taller. This means that your vehicle's structure may have to be changed if you wish not to seem much higher off the ground. Another consideration to be made is that the 2/3 is also more cheaply made. The housing for the spring uses one screw and a sort of plastic clip whereas the 1/3 uses two screws.
And finally: The 1/3 comes in light grey, and the 2/3 comes in black and dark grey.

Another problem may be if you can't dedicate a single space to building and have to store stuff between sessions. You can build in say, a box with low sides (or a box lid), so you can easily take it where you need.

Good advice, thanks guys. I always have the desire to use my parts for more than displaying sets, but every time I dig them out it's like a chore.
I did manage to sort a bunch of them and have them stored away, plus I've got a space where I use to do all sorts of work, both creative or otherwise, but it's rarely something that works for me.
Hoping it's just a phase, but part of me is feeling like I should just part with a large chunk of my collection and just stick to a more compact assortment.

I picked this up on a whim, and while building it, and then while playing around with the figures and cars, I had an insane rush of nostalgia. As simple as this set is, there is something really familiar about the very basic doll house police station and jail that made me 5 years old again.

happy to have finished the base model, but i'm still brainstorming how to mod it into an airship. i think the sweet spot is somewhere in between early 90s jrpg and understated steampunk. in my head that translates as 4 to 6 large propellers off the sides, but also some pipes darting around at certain places. still undecided if i'm going to commit to the masts and outfit the ship with sails; i'll need to bricklink the parts to add in more horizontal supports above the booms. y'know, for realism.

You could always outfit the masts with propellers instead of sails. And I think positioning the sales like pectoral fish fins would really help add to the steampunk look.

Huh, I've been working on an airship myself made significantly out of parts from the old Bounty. It's a smaller affair but I discovered that just adding a propeller to the mast looks a bit flimsy. I built up a sort of A frame with a couple extra supports for it, gives a better impression of the propeller being used to haul the ship it's attached to. Dunno how well that idea translates to multiple carrying it from the sides though. You'll probably want a bunch of smaller propellers pointing forwards or backwards as propulsion too, the more you have the more powerful it'll look and a ship that big'll need it. I also found The old Bounty's sails translate perfectly to airship wings if you wanted to go that disrection but I don't think the sails from that one will work as well since they're not symmetrical and the print's only on the one side.

Reading up on absolutely ancient technic, the old samsonite gears, and all the old types of spring/electric motors is really interesting. It's absolutely wild what Lego used to offer compared to today.
As an aside I am glad that city still uses yellow minifigs. Skin tone looks goofy on anything that's not starwars for some reason.

I like new direction in car design. Previously they were either too tiny (4wides - bottom) or too bulky (Speed Champions with oversized wheels) that it looked ridiculous. Now they are finally getting right proportions.

here's my work in progress MOC. I had one of those old Space Port 1999 lights and sound rocket parts. I added expanded engine's and managed to get a smooth base layer attacked to the underside. but I'm not sure where to take it from here or what I should do with the rest of it.

I'm interested in finding a way to use the wind-up motors for other things, but when I went out into the plague today, I neglected to pick up a set with one.

Good news everyone
I had an itch in the back of my head that I couldn't scratch. My NXT 2.0 brain block and a couple servos were not in my big box that I sorted the other day. So I went looking, and found another much smaller box that was hiding them. More importantly I also found more minifigures, and misc minifigure parts.
Only downside is even though I found them I'm still missing a -lot- of parts. Namely female Agent's legs. I'm not gonna do a cum tribute without those legs.

Can't take a pic right now but nope, full yellow with nothing printed in the head and torso. Talking about the figurehead, I find it weird that they didn't give it a cup like in the original Barracuda, but there's two golden ones included in the set if I want to have it holding one. Could even use the original yellow one, must be somewhere inside my old Lego box.

That one post about minifigs peaking and the Spartan laser pic took a comment I made once and took it out of context. I really don't understand the restriction against smaller builds. Small sets like the Astro Dart helped to define the aesthetic that we know today as "Classic Space." If anything, creating a small build that hasn't already been done and still reads as Space is probably more challenging. You even state in contest rule 4, "The emphasis should not be on number of parts but rather on the overall result."

i made a cool super compact pullback car a while back using the slightly bigger variant of that with the angular sides. But strangely enough it has less power in the beginning of its pull and slightly more (but still lacking) at the top of its powerband after that before it winds down
I'm wondering if I just got a very worn down one but I have none to compare. Most pullback motors have sanic speeds in the first seconds before quickly dropping off in power.

I think I've noticed the same thing with pullback motors. Likely has to do with the spring exerting energy to overcome resistance factors. When it does it is then able to hit it's highest rpm because it requires the least torque.

Good to hear, I didn't pay enough attention to my mental health and paid the price in the end.

There isn't much friction around the axle from the chassis or anything. I think the motor is probably kind of small for how heavy my build is. But the whole idea was to make it as low as possible, and maybe it's not too bad an idea for the car to implode itself into a wall at sanic speeds.

This set was very good despite lackluster interior. Small size made it suitable for exploring underwater caves or ship wreck. The set came with very handful dome, floaters and mechanic arm so if this submarine was too small for your taste, you had all parts needed to make a bigger one.

I find the majority of LEGO Movie sets to seemingly consist of random parts put together to make some really out-there and goofy-looking vehicles. The kind of things I as a kid would make with the parts I had available. If I can do that myself, what reason is there for me to drop 30-100 bucks a pop? Okay, they're most definitely made with better building techniques than I could ever do myself, but they look as appealing as my own creations (as in not at all). And TLM2 was even worse in this regard because it started mixing Friends parts and the aesthetics of Duplo, making the sets look even more random and hodge-podge.

Only the Apocalypsburg set looked appealing to me, but that came out at a time when money and space were tight for me, so there was no way I'd ever pick that up.

Johnny Thunder Lego movie when?
JT was one, and is one of the most well remembered lines of any Lego line. By name you may not be able to get a reaction from most people, but show them a picture of the absolute fucking chad that is Johnny Thunder and you'll get most adults that grew up through the late 90s to early 2000s having faint memories of when they were younger. With the absolute success that was TLM, the Ninjago movie (a movie about a very specific lego theme) absolutely dwarfing TLM, and the reasonable return investment of TLM2 Johnny Thunder given a rerelease would drive sales no issue.
Granted no issue is a bit misleading, he's not as popular now as he was when we were all younger, but marketing is something the lego group has become excellent at.

About time I made another robot. I’ve been wanting to build one with a free moving ball head/core for a while now. Not super happy with the ball being purple, looks much better in brighter colours, but I don’t have a lot of dome pieces on me and I like the weird colour scheme. Maybe I'll make some more robots in this style and in theory they could even have interchangeable heads.

it can, minimize it
some arms fit different torsos better than others depending on the age/type of plastic/mold
(cmf figures come apart easier and break less likely as they're a bit softer)
Some will be very loose, others extremely tight some fit on like nothing changed at all
as a general rule:
move the arm upward without the head first, very gently start applying pressure to test it
sqeaky high resistance = watch out
a smooth bend is alright
but when you finally decide if you want it taken off or not, pull them in a confident quick movement by using the leverage of the tip of the arm angling away from the neck towards the side
Take extra care with harded older torsos.

It's the law of diminishing returns. I really enjoyed the first movie sets, and I remember it was . Then the Lego Batman Movie sets came out, and the sheer number of sets seemed like overkill. Then the Ninjago Movie sets came out, and they looked pretty good, but fatigue was setting in. By the time the Lego Movie 2 sets came out, I was solely looking at them in terms of useful/fun parts. I just waited for them to go into clearance when it looked like the sequel wasn't going to perform nearly as well as the first movie.

pretty sturdy, yeah. If you wiggle the robot around the eye will slowly droop downwards, but in normal use it stays in place well. And the ball will definitely not fall out.
The ball itself is surprisingly stable too, if it drops on the floor it'll come apart, but otherwise you can even throw and catch it and it won't break. Also I switched to pic related's method from Moko, which is even sturdier, if you angle the pieces well

Follow up questions. I see that the Emerald Night Carriage instructions can be used to lengthen the Hogwarts Express Carriages. Would I need to buy an entirely new base plate for the Magnetic couplings or not?

You'll need a new Base Plate for the coaches anyway to lengthen them, also instead of a Caboose I recommend an ending Coach similar to the Express.

In short, your train should be

Ignore this, don't lengthen anything

You need 5 carriages and magnets for them and you'll need to motorize the tender, it's easy, if you want to see what it looks like from someone who actually owns it let me know.

If you want advice from someone who doesn't own the set, go with the guy above

When you're feeling blocked on a hobby forcing yourself to do it a little can go a long way in reminding you why you liked it. Decide you're gonna sit down and make a super simple car or spaceship or whatever, about just big enough for a minifig. It can be total shit, the important thing is to just start slapping bricks together and it can get you back into the swing of the design process. Once you've finished with that hopefully you'll want to do a better job on what you've made or have an idea for something else possibly and you'll be back in.

Rinzler's torso and legs are available on Bricklink, they're cheaper than the actual fig; if you want the helmets it might be a little more expensive, you'd be better off buying the entire minifig instead

As much as I love this set, I think it's a tragedy that the Imperial Armada never got a medium or large base. I always wanted to make (and still do) an equivalent of El Dorado Fortress (ironically a Bluecoat base despite the Spanish name), Imperial Trading Post, or Imperial Outpost for the Armada.

Instead, in 1997, we got Pirate's Perilous Pitfall (Shipwreck Island Part 2 with some Indiana Jones added) and Pirate's Ambush. I actually like those sets, but wish Armada had a base, too. Then they cancelled Pirates in 1998.

In Lego Chess and Lego Racers video games, the Armada used Imperial Outpost as their base, which is kind of weird, but better than nothing.
