So I just got a chance to build some things today and I decided to build a small Exploriens rover I had around waiting to be built.
Exploriens was a theme I had as a child and because of that I feel that I should have a lot of love for them. I had two of their small sets - 1858 and 6815. I'm currently trying to salvage back the pieces to remake 1858 and have rebuilt 6815.These are the only two vehicle sets that I feel work in this theme.

What strikes me about this theme is that while the minifigures have absolutely fantastic prints and the bases are somewhat solid the rest of the vehicles really seem odd. They certainly don't strike me as robust vehicles of exploration and seem to be too spread out and too flimsy to fit into what the theme seemed to want to be.
The theme's gimmicks are fun - the fossils showing different images through different filters and even the use of magnets give them an interesting perspective for a kid but I just can't figure out what they were doing with the vehicles.
I mean, have a look at 6854 (picture included) -is that guy snorting space fossils? Why are the wheels at the back? What's going on?!
How does 6982 even stay together? And what the hell is that huge round thing on top of 6856.
I don't really understand why but the vehicles really don't do it for me, and this is coming from someone who loves Classic Space and has quite a few "wacky" sets.
I'm just overall very confused by this theme, I feel like the astronaut designs and the builds themselves were somehow matched but weren't initially designed to go together.
The theme is pretty cheap on BL and since I have 3 small sets I'm going to get them all this year and maybe as I build they'll grow on me. I should have a more complete picture as I get more of them - in the meantime, if you guys have/had them please let me know what your take on them is.
Also why are they so unpopular in the MOC department? It feels like even Unitron has more MOCs.

Does anyone have a shot of the back of the box/alternate builds for any of the smaller Exploriens sets? Particularly 6854. There has to be more than the back-wheeled fossil sniffing vehicle out there.

I've bought some BNIB Lego from this era before and I'm glad the guy on the left has dodgy printing too.See how it isn't completely in the lines? I can't tell from those photos but the yellow print on mine is a bit thin too. Lego printing has always been shit.

Exploriens was near the beginning of my dark age, but I always assumed that that particular vehicle was supposed to be scanning for fossils, which is why the wheels were set back (so they wouldn't accidentally run over an important discovery)

As you mention it I've been looking at the thing and I think I've found it. This whole design decision of a wedge on top of two plates doesn't work for something that should flow. Lego has made some chunky little planes in the past, looking through them to see if they did anything like this though.

i bought the spider-trike electro set because i wanted the electro fig. 2 days later i found the og venom spider-cycle set and would've had the money for it if i hadn't bought the damn trike. frankly i still kinda regret it to this day, but luckily lego have given us more venom figs over the years.

The flimsiness of the Explorien Starship is one of the things that has had me torn about the birthday decision I made that year. It was between that and the Aquazone lab and I went for the Exploriens ship. Building it was confusing, so I never finished it and just made a stationary base out of it. I always wonder if I made the right choice. The Aquazone base had a sub that was similar to the Crystal Explorer sub which I had and basically was just the doors and that building there. It looks bigger than what it is it felt like, so it seemed like the ship was the better choice. I was never 100% happy with it though, so I guess it qualifies as maybe the only set I regretted, even though it was a birthday present >>8205769 I can't name any set I've paid for that I'm unhappy with at all.

The big thing on top I always thought was a giant laser cannon. This was about when the builds started falling off in quality with stuff that looked half built like they had to make it with less parts. Your mech moc and looking at pictures of some of the theme's sets has me interested in it again though. I might have to try to whip something up myself.

Building a new turret for one of my favorite vehicle sets ever, the Dieselnaut. I was never satisfied with the wimpy little crossbow turret on top. Just doesn't fit this beast of a machine.

I think I might need to build my new turret a bit lower though. And eventually I'll probably rework the little side turret too.

I love this vehicle.

I feel like this is just a downgrade from a previous A-wing set, and all the gratuitous nuLego slopes just conflict with each other too much rather than forming a coherent shape.
And all the fucking stickers.
I don't know, maybe I'm just jaded on new Star Wars sets in general, but I'd say if you're not averse to searching for out of production sets you should try to find 75150 or 75175. Still come with the inevitable sticker problem, but I feel like otherwise they're a bit better.

One of the few downside on this set. Not as much space as I'd like considering the size of the vehicle. There's a cockpit, the center platform and this space here in the back.

I recommend taking inspiration from the dino hunter tank, the double ratcheted vertical tilt allows for a fairly heavy overhanging turret

Also the new one doesn't have a control console of any kind, I had to add one. It also lacks the space behind the cockpit where you can store the pilots blaster or other small items.

I absolutely love this set. The gun barrels swivel up when you depress the prison canister, the wheels rotate downwards into a hover position, it's a great size, you can mod it fairly easily, one of the minifigures has blood in his legs, and you can remove the cockpit/rear jets to make a smaller craft. One of the greatest sets from one of the best themes. Just wanted to reminisce about my childhood.

I Just recently finished putting together the Aquanauts base together and had a lot of fun with that.
As far as what to do with this theme, I'm pretty torn. I want to get all of it but I really doubt I'll be keeping most of it in its original form. This might be the first theme I decide to populate mostly with my own MOCs rather than the original builds. We'll see how it pans out once I get their larger sets.

Question on toys favorite lego review mandr.

How is he able to buy and pay off a 20k car and is buying a house (yes buying not renting or renting an apartment) in a year. He doesn’t make much off youtube money wise.

With Jang its believable he can spend all this money and live on his own early since well he was in silicon valley working in an engineering field but Mandr doesn’t look like he graduated college yet.

I thought it was a good way to get the dragon out in a smaller, cheap(ish) way. The terrain isn't terribly great but it didn't add a ton to the price either. My biggest issue is that I didn't really love the dragon. I'm sure minecraft fans would appreciate it more. The front legs are pretty bad, and the blocky look doesn't really feel at home with other minecraft stuff. It just looks dumb to me. Take a look at the dragon if you're thinking about getting it since that's really all the set is. On the up side it is easily modable and the parts you replace will be useful neutral colored and not super common. Even with my complaints I would say it's worth the regular price, even better if you find it on sale.

That set is actually pretty sick, I also wanted it really bad when I was younger; I asked for it for xmas but got a bunch of other Indiana Jones sets instead of that one (which is fine) but I never did get my hands on it unfortunately

Yes, and I made a video on how to do it back in 2010 that blew up (since been removed by YouTube) & I believe it's what caused Lego to change the verification process for replacement parts (they now put a code in the back of instruction booklets instead of above the barcode on the outside box)

I am big fan of rock monsters. Especialy the Lego ones. SO when I saw this set on Leak - I HAD to get it.
It's suprisingly complicated for it looks. I enjoyed the building experience and even learned a new trick with that cool 2x2 modified plate with SNOT on top.
The golems look great in light, they shine giving away that coolnes factor.They are very posable, and the joins are quite nicely hidden, especialy when you pose them.
I will try and put the lightbrick inside the big guy one day.

The figs are decend, at least its not 21123213rd Steve and Alex. 2 Torsos can be used for castle torsos.
New Pixelized weapons are way more nicer than I expected from photos.

I bought them a couple of months ago - they're alright (some nice tidbits of lore) but like other Lego card games of the era they aren't anything interesting to play.

I was pleasantly surprised by the price to part ratio but not sold on the price to stuff. It feels like the set is weighted down by the 4 minifigs but I'm glad to hear to enjoyed it. I will likely buy this sometime during the wait for actual summer waves in burgerland.

I don't really care if the joints are visible, but am worried they gave up too much range of motion in hiding them. any thoughts on that?

I think I might understand the idea behind it? But fuck me, they're perfect.
This is just brain autism, but I think it's lego wanted to not have pieces that don't go to anything, and are sub a stud width/height? Like if you look at the 4x4x1 sloped hatch cover thing the hinge is under one side, and as a result if you don't have the male piece then it can't secure to anything?
I don't know if that makes sense, but regardless the massive gaps that more modern hinges create irritate me to no end

I think they like the click hinges more because they can stay firmly at specific angles and actually provide some structural stability, whereas the finger hinges are mostly only good for hinges and detailing

I saw a nice moc of a piano once that used the tines of black finger hinges for the black keys.
