I dunno what the intent with this universally accepted black background, white font all these brands are using to try and show solidarity with current events, but it just comes off as a creepy to me. Like something you'd see from a hacking or network hijacking. Makes a lot of the messages delivered that way seem menacing or even threatening.

Well it sort of depends on where you draw the line between action figures and dolls.

The action figures, the original six or so, showed up months late here and weren't carried by Target at all, aside from one box set of hideous recolors. They released another six, eventually, but trickled out one at a time over something like two or three years. A few of them, like Starfire and Katana, went to Ollies, while Hawkgirl and Cheetah were only available online. Complete clusterfuck and a real shame because they were decent for $10.

Then there were several series of dolls, like real dolls with clothes and hair. They all sort of sucked for several reasons. Like Mattel hates doing bangs so none of them had bangs even when they were supposed to. As the series went on, they started cheaping out by cutting joints, gluing on accessories, etc.

Where the line blurred was when they started releasing all plastic "dolls." The hair and the clothes were molded like an action figure. But they looked anorexic because Mattel didn't bother to bulk up the bodies to account for that.

It's like they looked at Hasbro's "efforts" with MLP and Marvel and Star Wars and decided to one-up them in the Fuckup Olympics.

Honestly this, they have a spectacular history and supplied a variety of great toys for years. Heman, suckerman, big jim, street sharks, the list goes on. But these recent turns just make me wish for their demise. If you're not going to keep making good toys, you're better off dead. Modern Mattel is a husk of its former self.

I'm confused by these business decisions. I understand the added diversity products, they're good for PR and you can get rid of them after a year. Make a loss on the products themselves and make it back plus some with improved sales elsewhere. That makes sense. But a large marketing push and corporate beaurocracy expansion doesn't imo. Marketing campaigns with even slightly controversial topics can come off as offensive and loud to some people like in Gillette's case, and adding meaningless ranks and employees isn't profitable at all. I don't really care about Mattel but the corporate rationalization behind these moves are pretty interesting.

Mattel is virtue signalling so as not to raise the ire of Niggs. Plain & simple. They've been making "diverse" dolls for years with the Barbie Fashionista line as their prime example. Too bad that the Fashionista line is full of cheap, hideous dolls with ugly potato sacks for dresses. Kids don't buy them and so the Fashionista line is a constant staple of clearance isles everywhere. So here's the ugly truth that Mattel won't say.

BLACK DOLLS DO NOT SELL.

It would be a waste of good resources for Mattel to make a high quality doll line full of minority characters. The vast majority of little girls and their parents do not buy black dolls en masse. Various studies show that kids consider black dolls to be "ugly" even among black children themselves. The Fashionista line is cheap on purpose because Mattel knows that kids won't buy them, yet they have to save face by promoting a diverse lineup of dolls to keep the twitter-tumblr tards quiet. The dolls are cheap enough to take a tax-break loss for Mattel and retailers to keep that virtue signalling going.

You want hard proof? Look no further than Mattel's Wild Hearts Crew line of dolls. The line was introduced last year with a diverse & woke cast of characters. The dolls had better articulation & better clothes than your standard Fashionista doll. But the whole line was a terrible flop. You can go to your local Wal-Mart right now and find entire case loads of Wild Hearts Crew dolls untouched from when they first were put on shelves last year. Nobody bought these more expensive, higher quality woke dolls. Mattel & Wal-Mart lost money on that venture which no SJW upvotes could ever get back.

Interesting. I wonder if this is down to the plastics conventionally used in mass-market toy-making doing a piss-poor job of replicating how black skin looks? Black people, especially darker-skinned, tend to show a lot more specular reflection of light than white people in their skin, so the matte-looking plastic you see in something like a Barbie doll head ends up looking more like white skin in blackface than an actual black person.

Huh well all of those look terrible. and I took a look at Wild Hearts Crew and they look great. The more cartoony, exaggerated style of the dolls really makes the difference though. Barbie's oddly trying to be realistic, and yet small cartoon bodies with big heads style just looks bad. I get it's the identity of the brand to be that style but that was because dolls then just didn't have the means to look realistic? I don't know if this has the same charm as the ridiculous muscles of He-Man toys. So why can't they go further into realism like 1/6 action figures/dolls, head and body in the right proportions. Not really; at the beginning (when Mattel run the franchise) the dolls were overall well-made thanks to sharing the same body and face mold, however near the end of the line even before the WB reboot Mattel cheapened out like they do with every doll line they have. The fact is, the franchise/toy sales did well enough to preside WB into making a complete high budget TV show instead of those ugly cookie-cutter cheap animation internet shorts. When I worked at Toys R Us, the black Barbies seemed to be peg warmers. My guess for it was that the majority of people who bought them were not black. My own estimate would be that we had more hispanic and arab customers than we did black, yet black barbies seemed to be over-represented in the line as if black people were 50% of the population, or even made up 40% of the population, despite that we had far more arab and Mexican customers. There was a time when we set out a bunch of clearenced Barbies by the front of the store, and the majority of it featured black Barbies. I don't recall us discounting white Barbies at the same level, but then again the majority of our customers were white.

Black superheros are probably in more demand, but they have to be major characters. I noticed that all the Black Panther toys sold out immediately; the majority of which was purchased by black customers, particularly parents who wanted to get their kids into a superhero. Also when the Justice League movie came out the Cyborg figure seemed to be a pretty hot seller. Just having black characters in general probably wont create positive toy sales if nobody cares who they are, sort of like Finn in Star Wars. Finn's a pretty shit character, but Black Panther is on par with Batman or Iron Man. McFarlane Toys could probably sell a ton of Spawn figures just because of this, if Todd wasn't a complete retard.
