Lego has pretty consistently had a "dinosaur" theme of some description, it just happens that jurassic world is the current incarnation because they want to take advantage of the license

anyone else love the old lights and sound pieces? Lego only made two really, this and the space port white rocket, but nonetheless I love both and want to try to build a thing around them.

Hopefully contestanon will see this with the flood of new threads.
I put the prize money towards Barracuda Bay. It seemed fitting because it was my inspiration for space pirates in the first place.
This is the most expensive set I've ever bought, not sure I would have bought it if the money had to come entirely out of my paycheck, so thanks again contestanon!

These sets are based on a show (or movie idk) so it's basically Lego's own little expanded universe. Would be nice to see that happen with other licenses.

no one gives a fuck about the little common sets. It's the big boys they want to pay out the nose for. Consider the following: Kids spent formative years playing with lego, but often not getting the huge and expensive sets unless they were fortunate. They long for the legos, but eventually they move on with their lives (but maybe not move on from legos).

Years later, usually about 20 years later in my experience, the period of time that was their childhood comes back into vogue, through a combination of natural longing by the new crop of adults for a bygone era of their lives, and by combination of how old becomes new again in thinking of fashion/etc. They think back to their childhood and remember the sets they had, but moreover, the sets they wanted but couldn't afford. Well guess what, somebody somewhere has it in a box in their attic, and for an inflated price, it can be yours! So you get people lining up to reclaim their misspent youth using their big boy adult money.

The problem with what you have is that everybody had the little sets, so it's not unique or desirable. The only answer I can give you is to wait until it's 20 years old and find an autistic NIB collector.

Is there a tool or service that helps you aggregate bricklink sellers to minimize the number of separate stores you have to buy from? Tedious as hell keeping track of every piece from every seller when doing a big build, especially when you find that you need another new seller for some new part you need.

i have a similar view with raised base plates, they are good for adding some scale to your lego sets and to most casual buyers they don't have the necessary parts to build such elevated surfaces and if lego did it themselves the prices would be high

but base plates are obsolete now so no point in complaining i guess

I too enjoy LURPs and BURPs as well as raised baseplates. I understand that it's a different direction than just birck builds but it allowed for a lot if interesting things to happen without pushing prices to a range where the sets might not have been viable.
I own a few of the rock pieces and several raised baseplates. I plan to get more. I feel they add a lot of height to a build rather easily and without too much cost.

This pattern - Sphinx from 1998.
Same plate (but recoloured) was also used in one Paradisa set as a mansion with a swimming pool and then later in Alpha Team for evil Ogel rocket base.

I've got the camera on a tripod with a 2-second shutter delay, light comes from a pair of standing lamps pointed away so it's all indirect lighting, and after that it's just fiddling around with color balance settings. The camera itself is old and cheap, Canon SD790 literally held together with tape because the bastard ebay guy took out some screws.

Color doesn't really matter anymore since these days it seems to be more of a plastic and manufacturing issue where they use cheaper and often recycled materials and shorter moulding and cooling cycles.
I remember reading how a machine (IIRC it even was the same) that some decades ago produced eight minifig heads in a few seconds now does 100+ in the same time.

Part/mould design seem to also massively influence cracks.
The current version of the 1x2 arches (left) for example has a line running down the middle that splits up near the top while the old ones don't.
However, it's THAT line where the piece will always end up cracking and I've yet to find one without those lines that did crack while there are tons of them with it.

It's also interesting to note that horizontal clips all break in the same way and at the same point.
Clis also don't seem to crack in one go but slowly tear themselves apart.
Check out your clips and see if you can find one that moves ever so slightly easier than the others then hold it so that it'll reflect light - chances are high that you see some slightly different reflection around the area where those pieces in the pic cracked or even already a tiny crack.

What do you mean by optimal shape? It's a Lego piece. It has to fit certain dimension and Lego machines it to a 0.01mm to 0.002 mm tolerance. Which is actually amazingly precise. Lego has pretty much kept up to the exact same quality it has always had except with a parts and color catalogue several times the size. And making thinner specialty pieces and experimenting with new pigments is where some issues come to fruition.

Overall, the only real abs plastic quality difference I've noticed is in the CFM series that I believe come exclusively out of the China plant. The hands in particular aren't as good as normal. Although the printing on them is superior to any other. So it's an odd trade off.

I definitely had WAY less pieces crack in the 90s and early 2000s than I have now and those were under heavy use while the recent ones are mostly on display/get rebuilt once in a while.
It feels like the older plastic was more pliable/flexible while the new one is more rigid (perhaps due to the basic pellets being translucent now with added pigments).
In fact, check out the holes of those parts here >>8224502
The old yellow one has markings where the stud was inserted where it pressed/scraped a tiny bit of plastic away to snuggly fit into the piece without cracking while the new tan one doesn't have this so the stud ripped the piece apart from the inside over time because it's under permanent stress.

Shit I'm jealous. I picked up a few I always wanted (Looping, Warrior, and Surfer), but some of the other always looked neat. Fun little sets with some great figures. I get why people overlook them but they're hardly bad.

Sounds like ghost who has an orange cart, with a bat like symbol, and is somewhat glow in the dark if I recall correctly. Been searching for one for months I think their was an ebay listing for one with the box and everything used sold for around 100 best offer so unsure exactly.

They're made from softer plastics which would also further prove >>8224644.
Just try to press the legs of a normal minifig and a China-made CMF together (only slightly, please) so that the sides of their feet touch and you'll notice the difference.

My first reaction was disgust but to be fair in house themes have not been as good post 2010. The Lego Movie was nice but sets for the sequel didn't grab me. The apocalypse stuff wasn't bad but no way was I buying the big set.

Lego movies are always the best original themes when they are running though. I bought atleast something from every Lego Movie since they are great. I have every set from the sequel except Apocalypseburg and Metalbeards heavy motor trike.
Monkie Kid looks really nice but there's only one set i care about and its all really overpriced. I'll probably buy nothing except the White Horse Bike thing until wave 2 if there are no discounts.

Also Riddler's Riddler Racer arrived. One of my favourite sets of all time definitely.

Oh did I mention Daniel the designed behind this tank design has been creating mocs since most people in this thread were sucking on their mommas teet.

Did I mention Daniel created a lego castle set with so much care lego made his design its own set the blacksmiths shop which is now one of the most highly sought after castle set ( this was way before lego ideas)
I bought two building notebooks, a sherman, easy eight, tiger and panzer tank. Plus a ton of hexadecimal stands and custom minifigures from Brickmania. Very good quality.

One of the things I first did when I bought the sherman was to catagorize the tank on bricklink. After that I had such a great time I ordered the parts on bricklink for another tank which honestly lowered my average cost per tank an I did that a couple more times to build myself an armored division.

Don’t listen to the people on this thread who will pay 50 dollars for a red minifigure clone from a 40 set set or the ones who will pay 200 for a barebone classic castle set with less pieces. At the end of the day they are bitter because they can’t fathom the fact they rely on Lego to design sets for them so they act like a good slave and project onto people who buy sets designed by non lego employed designers.

You could buy cobi which is on par with lego when it comes to brick quality nowadays - it would cost you around 25 $/€ plus shipping. I wouldnt recommend cobi back in 90/00 but they are just as good as lego now and so much cheaper than them. Downside is the soldiers minaitures, but i dont use em anyway. Got large remote chellenger 1 tank for like 40$. I understand that buying lego knockoffs is bad (like tgose ali knockoffs) but at this stage if you want military bricks just stick to cobi.

Overall I find this design rather dull and uninspired. They could combine Sphinx raised baseplate and come with much better and more interesting desing. At least thats what I'd do. It feels like Zeppelin and 80% of Shpinx set is not needed at all. You could turn 5988 into something like this on your own. Nice to see it anyway.

Yes, I know. Sadly Stud.io has very limited range there. Still IMO keeping Sphinx and Temple of Anubis is better option than trying to combine them into this thing. I see seriously zero reason to use Zeppelin there at all. It feels like all parts needed are provided with just Sphinx and Temple.

Final result reminds me of a bit bigger version of pic related. And with less features. In fact it has no features at all.

Nah, my mom ironed them once like 15 years ago but otherwise I haven't done anything besides run a swiffer over them once every few years.
