I prefer Magic Square's Prime but I think Newage's Ultra Magnus will be a lot better. NA's prime looks pretty good by itself too, I don't really like Primes with fake chests but it seems to have done the transformation pretty cleanly, and the actual Optimus Version will be remolded to be more tidy apparently?

I think NA's UM looks worse. The chest doesn't look broad enough in the windowed part, and the head crest is oddly long. The mini Prime looks alright except for the leg tumors.

While I think rubber runs the highest risk, there's a definite care issue here and y'all must be leaving your figures in some shitty climate conditions. I have quite a few figures with rubberized parts and not a single one of them has deteriorated after several years. Even my revoltech Melona's squishy tits are in prestine condition and I got that thing at its initial release.

Almost all 3rd party figures are derivative from G1 and all of those designs are symmetrical.

I've been trying to figure out how Newage's Ultra Magnus transforms. Like Magic Square's the bumper and grill spin upside down, but the back of the bumper has the robot mode's chest which just goes in front of the truck windows, the truck windows hinge down slightly to make room.

The arms seem pretty clever though. You can see truck detailing on the inner forearm and upside down, so it seems like for transformation the elbows bend back 90 degrees and spin around, as such that the top of the forearm faces downward in truck mode. That's a good way to get that rounded animation model look for the forearms while also actually using them for the alt mode. Some side panelling from the truck also seems like it will fold up and become the bottom of the forearm.

Hard to tell what's going on elsewhere though. It almost looks like the truck doors are stowed inside his back but what they're attached to doesn't look like the headlight panels of the truck's front, but that might just be because the render isn't completely final yet. Hardly any idea what's going on with the legs either, it seems like it's going to be a complete inside out transformation, like that GCreation IDW Prime. I just hope the big panel thing is a part of the trailer and not the truck though, it would be ugly for the truck if it weren't. The only real obvious transformation step for the legs is that there's a groove inside the thighs for the ankle joint hinge to fit into when folded up but I'm at a loss for anything else.

I'm really interested to see how this thing works, for such a small size it seems really complex. It's basically going for the same sunbow aesthetic as MP44 with the same kind of fake part trickery it had but the end result looks so much better for something that's like 1/4 the size. The only reservations I have about it is that I think the truck windows and the bumper might be too obvious in robot mode, but I hope that isn't the case. I also wish it didn't have the single crotch flap.

No, just poorly tested hint tolerances. Die cast feet are generally a pretty smart decision because it helps balance what would otherwise be a back/top heavy figure. Just look at the wonders it used to do for S.H. Figuarts. Plenty of 3p companies have use that as well and again, as long as the company is properly testing joint tolerances and managing QC, it's the best use of die cast you could ask for. Much better than companies that make huge chest pieces out of it or some other random pieces in the torso just to make the figure heavier and truck people into thinking "weight = quality" when in reality, it ends up throwing off the balance.

Diecast for sure has perfectly good applications for figures and some people tend to forget that, but it's hard to blame a transformer collector's experiences with diecast when most of what they see is figures that pull shit like painted diecast friction ball joint ankles that rub against each other while transforming.

I think the dumbest use of diecast has to be in the official MPMs though. It's not for heft because there's never enough of it, it's not for balance since they usually put it at the top of the figure (the MPM starscream has some on his fucking arms) and it's never really in any place that could be of structural significance. I almost think they literally just use diecast for the aesthetic since it's usually just bare metal diecast in some place visible, which I guess has some kind of visual merit? Maybe? Hard to tell what MP designers are thinking these days.

I have the sxs hot rod and the mmc override and I can 100% say that the mmc one is the better toy. It is so fun to pose and flip through the modes, the only downfall is the flanks are kinda empty and the head is set deep in the collar so poses are difficult.

I FOMO’d myself into ordering the Magic Square metallic Soundwave despite being mainly a Newage collector and I have to say I’m pretty impressed with this thing. Either the paint is covering up what I dislike about their materials or they had to up their casting quality to work with this much paint, but it looks and feels a lot better than anything I’ve bought from MS in the past. Transforming it took some paint off one small peg at the rear of the figure, but I think that’s an acceptable loss.

I’m normally very against fully-painted figures but in MS’s case they need to do this more often.

He could also have used another point between his hip ratchets too, his legs splay a bit wider than I'd like. I do love his transformation, vehicle mode, and general articulation though.

I think he's a little better, Vortex looks good but the legs on mine like to come apart from being moved which drives me nuts.

I think assaultus might end up being the "better in person" bruticus, it always looks weak in photos but in hand all the figures are really fun toys.

Had this from a trade, traded the DOTM Cyberverse Ark for it was a big mistake. I hated figure actually especially since it had the annoying lights and sound. What a fucking beautiful robot mode. Looks basically 1 to 1 from the game. The vehicle mode isn't perfect in terms of accuracy, but they did a damn good job with what they had.

I'm kinda the opposite. I thought Earthrise looked kinda lame, and the lack of proper thrusters on the jet mode sucks. Plus the thruster-heel is a nice integration of vehicle mode kibble.

Maybe my brain's just spinning its gears here, but having read up on the rumours that there's a connection between DX9, Newage and Magic Square (possibly feuding teams of designers now in a business rivalry), I was looking at some old War In Pocket figures and noticed DX9's old Sonic Wizard is very, VERY similar in a lot of ways to Magic Square's Voice Ripple. Everyone assumed Newage must have been some offshoot of DX9, but I'm wondering if Magic Square got one of their old designers?

If I could find a basketball or like a volleyball or something I'd make a really low effort joke but I don't think I have any.

The planet mode is very spherical, holds together very solidly but it is VERY hard to get everything secured into place properly.

MP10 and MP36 for scale here.

It's not so much that it's failed so much as it's damn near impossible to get it clipped together in the first place. On their own the rings can clip together jsut fine and stay together, but when they're attached to the planet you just can't flex them enough the right way to make them slot into each other properly. I might try trimming down the tabs later to make it easier/possible but I'm not sure if I want to bother.

Now, the planet features some pretty good articulation.The big mandible things can move around quite a lot too. You can also place it on its stand in most orientations, though you'll need to make sure it's not resting on any molded greebles.

spoilers: the reason why I had his arm off is because this fucking happened, the outer panels on one of his shoulders just twisted straight off the first time I tried rotating it. I think what happened was the peg was inserted into the shaft so tightly that it just wouldn't turn properly and got torn off instead. There's a few various areas on this guy that I think are too tight and this is for sure one of them. Thankfully this didn't happen to the other shoulder but I still fucking drowned that joint in lube anyway as a precaution.

I really hope something like this doesn't wind up being a widespread issue.

I ended up fixing it, but boy was that not a fun fix.

If I didn't fix it though, those shoulder panels can still lock into place very securely in either robot or planet mode, so it wouldn't ruin the figure. Though if I left it broken it would have driven me nuts.

Spoilers: I think he's really good, though some joints are way too tight and really needed to be lubed/loosened slightly, even considering how big and heavy he is.
