How close or along are we to having big toy companies sell a figure as a 3D printer file and charging the same/less for said figure?

What's not to say Hasbro says "hey we could make a crap ton more of money without production and distribution by having the customer download a file and make the toy/figure themselves!!"

No way will it happen. But if it did, there would have to be a lot more safeties built into the files and even in the printer hardware to afford a license to print only as many copies as the customer pays for before the file self-deletes. And then you’d have to have a foolproof printer, which I think we all know doesn’t exist.

Maybe I'm ignorant to 3d printers but wouldn't all the pieces of the figure have to be printed separately? And then they still wouldn't be painted. I don't see that taking off.

I'd imagine doing that would only allow for more bootlegs being sold.

For years already it's been possible to 3D print in full color. Color fidelity and quality are a problem though.

And no, all the pieces don't necessarily NEED to be printed separately, as we also have the ability to print functioning, no-assembly-needed joints and other mechanical objects. But for the sake of ease they probably would be printed separately and need basic assembly.

a dealer with a bunch of Gundams. Some kid started talking to his friend. He said paying money for this stuff was stupid. He worked at a place through his school that had a 3D printer. He said he could probrably find models online and print them out for free.
Not only was this guy rude, bragging loudly and insulting the dealer in front of his customers, but he was also a total dumbass.
Gundams are made with ejection molded plastics. They use big machines with high pressure and heat to get the plastic just right to have a solid and durable plastic in the final product. Even expensive 3d printers cannot match the durability and detail of these molded plastics.

This is also why you can't 3D print decent Lego bricks. It is also why many other brands and knockoffs feel so much cheaper and break easier than Lego. Lego has fi e tuned their factories to output higher quality plastic bricks.
Even a friend that sold 3D printed gaschapon a friend designed at cons knew this. He studied material science. He knows what industrial processes go into making quality toys. They need huge expensive high powered machines, even larger and more expensive than top of the line consumer 3d printers. Even business 3d printers can't physically match it. Though they are great for prototyping and other preliminary work.

For a decently designed model that’s pretty cheap. Commissioned stuff can run in the hundreds for custom heads alone (depending on the artist).

Only ever bought a blank female figure. Articulation points grew loose kinda quick. It can barely hold poses now. Easy to assemble, though. He just needs to tighten the dimensions on some parts and they’ll remain stronger longer.

Source: I use Shapeways for making and selling Figma-sized joints myself.

Thanks bro. If I get any I'll be sure to reinforce the joints with superglue prior to assembly (it should soak into the plastic and render it much stronger), or failing that dremel out the joints and replace them with figma/Revo joints.
