What are some flubbed figures just barely hanging onto being good that you like? For me, it is Prowl II

Basically, in beast mode his owl head can spin around, but in robot mode it's made so that the wing section can face forward and also spin around as...some kind of attack, or shield, I really don't know. But because of how it is, the pegs that look like they should clip the wings in place in robot mode do not actually clip into anything, so the whole gimmick is always floppy

I'm so divided on some select releases. Zetar is just a repaint of a mold I don't like that much, but that drill looks neat. Greasepit stupid stickers annoy the hell out of me, but I love Ironworks.

I don't think SS86 is really intended to capitalize on the movie. It's just Hasbro keeping the Studio Series filled as an expansion of what they've been doing with WFC. It's just about real estate. I could be wrong and we might end up with SS86 Optimus Prime or something within the next year or two, but I doubt it. The figures seem very much deliberately chosen to complement what's going on in WFC.

Just look at the decos and sculpt details. Are the SS86 figures all that much more animation accurate than what we've been getting? I don't think so. Jazz even has metallic face paint.

We'll probably get another Optimus for SS. They notably haven't released on with a cartoon head, so I'll either be a new mold or retool of the ER Optimus (Probably replacing all the blue parts since those are the easiest to swap for a more animation accurate look). No fucking clue what they'll do for Megatron.

Battle damaged and 'Reformatting' version. The issue is the alt-mode. I could see them including a miniature version of his gun alt-mode to bullshit an excuse about animation accuracy.

Closest I can see is Reformatting, some clear parts and justifying the look by saying it's before he turns into Galvatron. They did something similar with the Ehobby release of Universe Galvatron to justify the tank mode.

They've already tried to release Megatron with a different colorscheme, apparently, even garish colors aren't acceptable since the retailer can still decline it. It'd also be weird to make a new mold and only sell it on Pulse.

Those leakers were right in the past and they belong to the same secret club (you should see that thread when Kingdom leaked) and they already saw Kingdom Magnus, Dinobot, Galvatron, Tigatron and Rhinox.
I like Siege Magnus and his inner bot. Everything come to the altmode. If you want G1 form wait for Kingdom.

I don't have the version that has both the Commander and Titan updated but this was a list that was compiled and the leaks for wave 1 that came after it confirmed pretty much all of the named characters from that wave here.

Grapple, he's a pretty damn solid figure in both modes. Blitzwing has a decent-ish robot mode but his vehicle mode is absolute garbage and the transformation is a joke.

I personally want to recommend Grapple, but the peg-breaking problem is something you do have to deal with, either just slightly sanding the pegs down or slightly expanding the pegholes, either or.

Hasbro is too much competition for deluxe/voyager scale. Like a 60$ premium deluxe scale sideswipe is a harder sell when walmart has one for 20$ that's pretty much just as good.

Takara MPs with their one release every other month that's deathly afraid of breaking out of G1 cartoon characters, and Legends scale where the difference in quality between Hasbro and 3P is just way too big, are both way more viable markets for 3Ps to break into.

This just feels to me like they tried to fix something that wasn't broken. The transformation would have worked the same with a more realistic T-Rex, but they flipped around some things for no reason and the end result is a T-Rex with spines on his crotch and a robot with yellow belly shoulderpads, puny hip guards and massive clusterfuck of panels on his back that don't even bother to take any kind of neat-looking shape. Even the two huge chunks of kibble on the original toy were less obtrusive and could be completely moved out of the way.

They really don't though, plenty of characters just got toys who haven't had a decent one in forever or even since the 80's, the fact that every toyline needs to have Optimus, Megatron, Screamer, and Bumblebee is just kind of obligatory, you wouldn't have a Spider-Man toyline without Spider-Man and Venom, those are the ones who allow the others to exist

I meant the MP and the KO version of the MP Beast Megs. Aside from some differences in the paint job, as well as dumb clear plastic eyes for the dino, the only difference is the KO has a sturdier crotch and stronger joints (a few of them were kind of too strong imo)

MP KOs nowadays are just no-brand and come in blank boxes, there aren't that many KOs that try to pass off as official products anymore. There's plenty of sites that stock KOs and clearly state whether something is a KO or official product.

On the one hand, I'm very happy with the gold paint over piss yellow plastic but why the fuck did they paint the neck instead of leaving it translucent? It even looked like they had another piece inside it with sculpted details. No. I would legit pay $60 for a CHUG scale TF that's on par with the build quality of old CHUGs. There's too many compromises in modern CHUGs, especially in altmodes. I'm still disgusted by PotP Optimus, and that was a fucking leader class.

WFC lines are much, much better than CW and PotP, but good god it's still full of compromises I'd rather just pay more to do without. Megatron especially comes to mind, don't know how anyone thinks that tank mode is acceptable.

I hate them both equally, the visible feet completely kill it and even though the ER fixed up the front, the back is still a huge fucking gap. I would legitimately rather have some vehicle kibble in robot mode than anything breaking up the the vehicle mode itself.

But one nice thing I will say about modern CHUGs is they do usually hit it out of the park with those robot modes. It's clear getting them right aesthetically is a huge focus, I just think perfection isn't worth it if it costs you the altmode. A robot mode can still look great with kibble as long as the overall silhouette is good. Classics prime comes to mind.

Most folks who like G1 Grimlock are aware of that but it's part of the charm. It has that old school pulp sci-fi look to it which is goofy as fuck but also fun if you're not trying to take everything seriously. If you want a more proper "serious" looking Grimlock, your options are either Bayverse Grimlock in some form or there are a few 3rd party options out there. Planet X in particular has their FoC Grimlock which is absolutely fantastic and they have a Maximum Dinobots one coming sometime next year, both of which shoot for more modern interpretations of a t-rex.

I would love a G3-style revitalization with new characters and new factions, but as far as the toys go a lot of the design beats are pretty flexible anyway, so why bother with new characters? And, to be fair, it wasn't that long ago that Transformers was dominated by "new." The movies, Animated, and Prime were all different, and so was the UT leading up to the movies.

Eeeeh, I was a kid when Armada came out but I still didn't like megs much. But then it came off the heels of RID, how do you beat a dragon with a bajillion different altmodes? You don't. Not to a kid.

On a side note, though, god I fucking loved RID. I know a lot of it was old BW and G2 molds reused, but it was nice to have a lot of those BW molds be actual characters in a show, and some of those original molds were top tier. Prime is still one of my all-time favorite toys, period. I love the super armor gimmick, shit's great.

The thing about RiD Prime is that they actually really could market him as a separate character too if they wanted, he had just different enough looks and a different altmode, they wouldn't do it but they totally could get away with making a canon "Fire Convoy" being a different character than "Optimus Prime" in the same "continuity"

Honestly I would kill for something like the ROTF or RTS lines where we got G1-ish versions of characters that didn't exist in the original toy lines, like Lugnut or Lockdown. Just having 100% new characters show up has always been cool and fun.

I really wish RiD didn't reuse so many random names and embraced Fire Convoy and Gigatron as new characters instead of checking off the yearly Optimus Megatron quota. Hell knowing they had the G2 molds still they could've released the combat heroes in G1 colors and called them Optimus and Megatron and just had them as the behind the scenes leaders on Cybertron while Fire Convoy and Gigatron handled field operations on Earth. Fire Convoy should being in the same class as Lio and Big but gets denied this because he's instead a D-list Optimus in America.

It was a factory error, if the figure had the problem it was evident immediately out of the box, if not then the figure was going to be fine even if you ham hand it.

Had mine since release and regularly transform and pose it, no defect present.

Still getting the kingdom one because I love the character, but I'm under no pressure lllusions that it will be even 1/20 as good as the mp.

Don't get me wrong that should NOT happen on a figure that expensive.
But it's seems like it was a really small amount of figures that suffered from it.
Vocal minority and all that.

I can honestly say MP megs is the best transformer I own and one of my best collector items I own, up there with my hot toys.

My beast wars collection is one of my favourite things to look at and the big man himself is the centerpiece.

The fact that the figure is held together by two small and thin pieces of brittle plastic screwed together around a sliding rail and housing two spring loaded ratchets doesn't bode well for the longevity of the figure either way, really. That part needed to either be a stronger type or plastic or redesigned to be bulkier.

The entire body of the dinosaur mode is fuck loads of individual panels so he is a bit of a pain to transform. Thankfully the entire housing can be removed which makes it easier.

I think there is a ko, if its much cheaper and you love the character then it's a no brainer, he lights up a shelf himself.

At this point I don't see the need to track down the import when you can get the domestic one much cheaper. The shiny paint doesn't really fit Kup anyway. Its a fun mold but has some of the weird engineering quirks of that early movie era.

He's loaded with articulation, though, and the only real flaw is that he's kind of a shellformer, and his forearm kibble is pretty egregious. There are plenty of repaints of the mold, so do a bit of research before you find which version you wanna drop your cash on; they are varying amounts of expensive.

TR Perceptor. The sculpt on it is good, the deco is great, but the joints are all loose and the microscope mode really should have been better than it is given it doesn't even need to bother with incorporating the head. It's as good an alt mode as the original Perceptor toy (unsurprisingly, given the similarities) but that's kind of the problem.

But I still love it because it's Perceptor, and Transformers that turn into things other than vague space jumbles or vehicles will always be my bag, baby.

It was loose out of the box, yeah. From what I read it wasn't an isolated issue either. Same for the pin the scope slides across being an overly tight fit. But it's Perceptor, and they don't come around too often. I still like the figure on its own merits. The fact we even got a Perceptor figure with his original alt-mode is worth some gratitude, even if it's accurate to the G1 toy to a fault. It's not like an Earthrise or Kingdom Perceptor was ever in the cards.

I think my favorite "flubbed" is the Transmetal 2 Igunaus/Reptilion mold. Every review online calls it mediocre at best, but the design is actually really inventive and the abundant Beast Wars articulation means he has a level of expressiveness that belies his age.

I got a nostalgia(tm) kick when I'm past feeling young, even as a zoomer. I looked through old stashes of toys, and found a green bag with old bayformers toys
I wasn't fazed by the movies, with next to no memory of what happened in them.
Looking through, I see mcdonalds toys, 2 bumblebees, and toys you would find sold in packs of 2/3
(In the meantime I also read up/watch TFA, since I remember that more fondly, and with a genuine like for it. It then makes me deepdive into looking over generations of cartoons/comics with tfwiki. It's actually really fun as an overall franchise)
Pic related was one decepticon toy that catched my eye. Searching up the name, the character is really obscure, as a reuse of the Dreadwing mold with brief appearences in comics.
This is Overcast, and his head and overall shape looks awesome. I might try sketching his design in the future.
(It's notably sad though how one character gets a painted toy for themself and get manufactured and sold, but barely has a fleshed out background to justify the toy's existence)

I think it's more they're courting the global market harder again, so by reducing the amount of text they need to translate, they can just make a "universal" packaging style. Look at the back of a box. You get a name, how many steps it takes, and then legalese in 26 languages...which takes up half the box.

All the gimmicks in the world won't save something from being trash. The only thing PotP Grimlock has going for it is the passable bot mode but the alt mode is horrible, the torso mode is wonky as fuck, and to cap the entire shit cake off, PotP has some of the worst QC and cheapest shittiest plastic of the entire trilogy. I will happily take SS86 Grimlock over that hunk of garbage any day because it actually gives me what I fucking want in a Grimlock toy.

I know this'll sound stupid, but I really hope the shoulder cannons on Primal can fold into the robot mode. If the beast mode can do it, I don't see why the robot mode can't. The fact that every pic of the robot mode has the cannons out is getting to my autism more and more every time I see them.

For me personally only the main three matter. Swoop and Snarls are just filler, with the former having the benefit of being much different from the rest. I'm pretty sure that with enough support from the fans, Snarl will eventually come as well.

And this is, no joke, my favorite Megatron. The Bat-Primal two pack were my first transformers and I loved the little comic that came with them and have always wanted more of that story. So I headcanon him as like an actually effective leader constantly working in the shadows with his own cadre of super-dedicated Cons within the official ranks. A secret war with higher stakes.
