So is Playmates going to do ANYTHING with the Ninja Turtles license in 2021? TMNT was always their evergreen cash cow. Did Rise really do that badly that Playmates & Nick have no faith in the brand ever making a bounce back?

I know that they've shown these elite figures back in July. But the line is for adult collectors more than a kid's. It's a pretty weak, half-hearted attempt to cash-in on what Super7 & Neca are doing. I wouldn't be surprised if Playmates canceled it, giving how lukewarm the fan response to these figures are.

So yeah, leave the adult collectables to other companies, Playmates. What are you going to next to really revive the TMNT line?

I think Rise is dead as far as toy sales. I haven't really heard or seen anything regarding new toys in what seems like forever. The show is ok-ish, but strays a bit too far from the source material in attempting to be different at every avenue. Playmates themselves should be considered as creators of TMNT as a brand, despite that they existed as a comic book beforehand, Playmates and their toy team, such as Mark Taylor are responsible for a number of the changes to the franchise.

I dunno what Playmates' plans are going forward, but TMNT is like their bread and butter, and Nick kinda handed them a turd with Rise. The 2012 series was very successful for them and probably would still be successful today had Nick kept the show running.

Yeah he had it but on the original toy it was molded in and not painted so it blended in with Bebops leg and makes it hard to see.
Also the show omitted the detail for the most part >>8630340
The ring around his leg is probably remnant of the brace.

There was a strong effort by the Playmates design team to make the figures gross and hyper detailed. Originally the Storage Shell turtles had all kinds of sculpted innards inside them.

Depends on when Playmates was working on him, because Leatherhead first showed up in Tales of the TMNT in 1988. Either way I feel Playmates and their design team deserve a bit of creator credit for the contribution to the franchise.

yeah I hit up the archived peter laird blog and I see he did the design for what would later become mutagen man, and a proto-bebop, but most of his other toy designs didn't get used, and the ones I thought I remembered him designing were someone else.

I swear the toy I had was a nice gradient of brown to pink, not nearly as much pink as these pictures, but not quite as brown as the alt-head pictures I'm seeing online..

I remember when I was a kid I fucking FOUND rocksteady just.. on the ground randomly behind a building. wasnt gonna pass up a free turtle figure!
another time i thought i'd hit the fucking mother lode when we were looking at new apartments and this one had a big-ass pile of turtle figs in the middle of the floor. I thought they came with or something

While I know they have been different colors, I think their shells were all the same color in the vintage figures, with dark shells, at least for the wave 1 vintage turtles. For whatever reason, Raph gets a brown one while Leo gets a black one.

You probabky did, just looking up vintage Bebop on Google images turns out a lot of results with different coloured heads plus I think it was only the first releases that had very pink faces anyway.

Unless you ordered them from Super7 don't expect to see them until a month or two from now. It was the same thing with Wave 1, a lot people got there's from Super7, but then everyone who ordered elsewhere had to wait for those online retailers to get their turtles in from Super7 and then send them to them. In the interview they did they mentioned they were considering doing it since they were surprised how popular they were too.
I imagine if it's going to happen then it'll be sometime next year since by the end of 2021 we will have all 4 Turtles.

The neca, Tokka's shell has been digging into the back legs of the figure, ruining the legs. There's a lot of QC issues with this figure also involving missing parts, such as eyebrows and them just in general breaking.

I mean, to me that idea actually sounds the opposite. They still have a ton of characters to go, but announcing / sliding in a third punk frog after the first two as a "new never released toy designed by original designers in the style of incomplete team toys you had as a kid" is the kind of shit you do once people have all four turtles, initial hype is dying down, and they are wondering what the future of the line could be besides waiting for their favorite side character. That's a early-middle of the line move, not an end of the line.

And honestly, there is precedent for it, Pumm-Ra from the Thundercats line shows that they're willing to go back to the source material and find new shit for the fans that still simultaneously hits them in the nostalgia button. The "I never had that as a kid but I wanted it" niche is something a toyline like this tailor-made to fill, even if you add non existent things to the niche and turn it into "I never noticed this was missing as a kid but now I want it".

I mean, outside of the original toyline aesthetic, both companies have done crap like this. I'd expect both Neca and Super7 to hit characters like Karai, Lord Dregg, and the Punk Frogs eventually.

Fan art pic related - especially with how different Napoleon's toy looked from his cartoon counterpart, Super7 could go really crazy with the designs of the rest of the team to counter the screen-accurate versions that Neca could produce.

I just took the dive on this line, ordered wave 1 off of eBay at a significant mark-up, and pre-ordered wave 2 from BBTS. I have never gone in on one of these retro style lines, but this was my favorite toy line as a kid. I had the original of nearly every figure that they're making (didn't have Muckman, my cousin did though). Pretty damn hyped.

Have they announced any plans beyond wave 4?

Not yet, but Wave 4 was just shown off last month so it makes sense they haven't shown off Wave 5 yet. There's a consistent schedule to when they show off a new wave compared to the previous wave's release but I forgot what it is. In podcasts they've mentioned that they're going to do several more waves at least, so long as sales stay as good as they have been I think it's very possible this line will remake 80-90% of the original line (minus maybe some of the shittier figures no one liked from when the line started going downhill)

Sweet, thanks anon! The only other figure that I have from these guys is the glow-in-the-dark Ultimate Toxie they released a while back, and it ended up really surprising me. Should fit in nicely with TMNT as well.

Sure you lost the wrist swivel, but in exchange they could set a lot easier, had longer legs for kicking, ball joints on all 5 extremities, and unlike the original figure's hard plastic hands, the soft rubbery ones let you get their weapons in and out of their hands without breaking them.

Surprisingly I never felt like they were too fragile, though the hand balls could probably break if you weren't careful. Posing is...definitely limited. That was one of the flaws for the line. You can get them fighting, but don't expect to do any super fluid stuff.

But, yes, overall I'm happy with them. They were just so different looking and they were nice and large. It was a fun line.

I'd say Classified is better, but keep in mind this is just my personal opinion and not me stating a objective fact.
That line is really good and probably the best action figure line Hasbro has going at the moment since they're actually putting in some effort and giving them good sculpts and articulation (though they're fucking up hard on the distribution).
So yeah, personally I'd say Classified is better than Ultimates but at the end of the day they're both really good.

And honestly you shouldn't have to dunk a figure in hot water either. Just go limb by limb if you have to, but it shouldn't be a problem. Most of the time the hair dryer does the job, but I like using a plastic syringe to help focus blast a joint with boiled water to get it the right pliability.

If I recall from a few threads ago, they interviewed one of the guys and he noted that they had outlined plans for at least 7-8 waves, including "disguise turtles" (not confirmed but likely pic related) and Usagi Yojimbo.

The general idea is that they're worried people will lose interest in the line after they get all four turtles, so they're currently planning on including some version of one of the four turtles in each wave.

I love that my biggest nitpick on this entire set is that the retromutagen cube visible in the crushed donut is a dull green, when it should be a pale pink. There's another green bit on one of the other donuts that looks like it poked through a bit (come to think of it how the shit did they get those in there?) but that looks more like chipped paint

a lot of toylines have this issue, trying to get into Marvel legends this year was rough because a lot of stuff I wanted was already off the shelves. Luckily they are reissuing some of the more expensive ones. TMNT has it worse though because the Turtles are the entire fucking point. So if it is impossible to get them, why even bother? If S7 is smart, once they hit wave 4 they will make a box set of all 4 turtles available and sell it once or twice a year for people to "catch up"

to be honest, the Ultimates series, which homages the old toys... the main turtles are the LEAST important, since they're not that unusual or distinct. it's all the others.. Alf-Splinter, shirtless shredder, vac-metallized metalhead, goofballs like mutagen man... but it might just be my nostalgia, since I was born in '85 and have little nostalgia for the original figures (they were LONG gone). I thought my parents were super generous buying me so many. then I grew up and realized 4 bucks was never going to bankrupt anyone, and considering how happy they made me and how I never stopped playing with anything... that was a no-brainer for them. Whereas video games I had few of because those were incredibly expensive

My family got me plenty of toys; probably too many at times. Sometimes you just can't get something you want; be it because there's no extra funds, or you didn't deserve it at that time.

I'm very fortunate that I was never made to get rid of things, and I also kept almost everything I was given in as good condition as I can.

yeah there were times I missed out on some stuff because of timing. Christmas comes but once a year, and with it comes whichever megazords were out at the time. divorce mixes that up a bit too.
I wish I'd kept a scrapbook of a small clipping from all the packaging from everything i'd ever collected though, especially when they had cut-out info cards on the back

I actually managed to keep a bunch of the cardboard backings of my toys, and some of them I don't even remember the toy, but I'm grateful for the evidence. Having said that, I'm definitely missing tons of them.

It probably contributed to my current need to hoard empty toy boxes, though.

that's exactly what I was thinking. Plus I keep forgetting Insecticon's name because that's not a name you give to a person. what the fuck were they thinking? beast wars had characters named insecticon and dinobot, that's like naming your kid 'caucasian'

My Birthday was middle of the year, and Christmas at the end, so I had pretty good dispersal. I kept clippings of cardbacks, but over the years I kept getting rid of them for various reasons; running out of room, they started to smell really bad, finally I lost a whole box when the sewer backed up in our house. I still have some floating around, and I can probably get high res photos and scans of anything I really want, so I'm not all bummed about it.

It makes sense when you consider all the other turtles duel wield their main weapons, Donny has always been the odd one out in that regard.

The main dude said in the interview posted a few threads back that they made the exclusive non-essential on purpose. It's nice to have, but won't spoil collections if you can't get one.

He actually laughed and acknowledged it wasn't wise to do a non-turtle exclusive from a money-making standpoint, but whatever, Baxter was his original favorite toy so he made a variant of that, and this way he wouldn't piss any fans off by making a "required" exclusive.

This is also the mindset they've had with the possible re-release of wave 1, they needed to figure out a way to make them different enough to the first editions so they wouldn't piss off the hardcore collectors, while also making them almost identical to the first editions so latecomers could complete the four turtles, but that way they wouldn't be making accidental "variants" for the hardcore collectors.

Well, the TMNT super7 list is small enough and slow enough that I'm planning on updating that chart periodically, so I got you there.

God Bless whichever anon is keeping track of the legends chart and updating it with the literal hundreds of marvel legends coming out a year plus sorting them by baf part, exclusive store, etc.
