Some pics of an unproduced pitch to Playmates by Funpub, the company who did the GI Joe and Transformers Collector's Club figures for Hasbro. Essentially they'd repaint figures and sculpt new heads for said figures in order to produce new figures from those molds. Their toys were often expensive and these probably would have cost similar to what Super7 charges for a single Ultimates figure, which often pissed people off about the GI Joe Club figures since they were not produced by Playmates, but instead licensing and producing the figures themselves.

Yeah, the GI Joe Club figures were like $40 each, and people often complained about it. It had to do with the figures being made to order and in low production numbers, lower than any retail figure. And yes it indeed would have looked like a retail figure, but probably would have more paint apps.

They are customs. They're for a pitch. They're not the final sculpts. Funpub used to commission Boss Fight and 4 Horsemen and others to do headsculpts for figures.

It could have been, and they would have been similarly priced as the Super7 Ultimates which is the crazy bit-- like around $30 or $40 per figure just for that Playmates quality figure. Funpub also used to force you to buy a figure subscription; you couldn't just buy the figures you wanted either and get one or two figures, so you had to plop down between $300 and $400+ and they'd mail you the figures thru-out the year. And they would do a separate convention set and charge another $300+ for that.

Hasbro basically killed Funpub and the idea of figure subscriptions when they decided to consolidate all their conventions as Hascon(they only ever did one Hascon) and Hasbro Pulse exclusives.

I'd buy him. They should put those decals on him as printed paint apps and sculpt all those cardboard mice and turtles as little plastic bits that he can eat. They do desperately need to put out a pack of Mousers. I kinda want them to make a pack of 6 Mousers, with 3 regular ones and 3 glow in the dark ones.

I had this toy, I'm aware of this paint job, but this is the first time I've ever sat and consciously realized... the painters at playmates were of fucking subnormal intelligence. and/or the designers and sculptors didn't give them color guides (I know color printing was expensive in the 80s but come on). Between this and splinter's nose and all the unpainted or mispainted bits in the classic line, they really didn't know their asses from easter baskets.

Playmates was just some random company from Hong Kong trying to make it in the US at that time. They didn't make it big until TMNT, and didn't start caring about details until their Star Trek line.

If we're lucky they're on the boat from the factory next month. Chinese New Year shuts down factories for most of the month, because it's a 16 day holiday, that started on the 12th and is going on thru to the 28th of this month. They literally come back to work to work on our toys on March 1st, and I don't know how long it takes to make the figures and box them and if they had already started work on them before the holiday break.

I just wish they'd post the April already to at least tide me over. It's painful waiting so long. We still don't know if Metal Head has light piping, but it's really cool that they managed to give him some Vac-Metal since you don't see it very often in toys anymore.

The show wasn't that bad. I watched it and found the episodes watchable. The main issue was that they tried too hard to make everything too different, particularly on April and Splinter. As for the toys, my only criticism would be that they looked too much like the animation with their overly smooth and undetailed sculpts.

The cold hard rotation is worse, She's even less flattering from certain angles than are usually shown / posted.

The issue isn't the head, as >>8805726 points out. The toy appears to have been scaled down to about 80% of the original prototype, but because they had the resculpted the head, the head's design didn't get scaled down too. She's too short when next to the turtles.

It's a genuine mystery, the second prototype looked great.

Best guess, the tweaked size was either a cost-saving measure, or an attempt to solve potential figure joint issues (as we see sometimes with their other human figures, most recently Rat King).

The lack of shit flinging about April's joints and paint apps suggests to me that the latter was the case, and was successful - it's just a shame they forgot to rescale the head to match.

I did buy four Baxters: 1 glow in the dark when the pre-orders went up and 3 of the wave 1 reissue figures just so I could get their Mousers. I'm thinking about selling the two spare Baxters without the Mouser to someone looking for a cheap Baxter. I also got a spare Mutagen Man who had paint slop with his feet: One has a splotch of grey paint on the red of his foot and the other has like paint missing on the tips of his white toe nails. I bought two and was going to keep the best one. I was thinking if someone wanted him for like $20 I'd sell it without his mailer or box, since it takes up so much space in shipping, I'd probably do the same with the Baxters.

I think so? Assuming the wave had someone in high demand like Slash to balance it out, so no one is annoyed a literal who army builder pack is replacing one of the hotly contested ~12 slots a year.

On the other hand, the Super7 interview guy did say they were thinking about how to do a mouser pack that wouldn't just be "more of the same one you already have from Baxter", which means it's not part of the plan for waves 6-7, which he mentioned are finalized plans at this point. Maybe for wave 8, or earlier if they make it a Con exclusive version.

the cartoon line has been plagued with QC issues while the movie line hasn't.. and personally I feel like the movie designs, being real life objects that existed as a costume, translate a lot better as toys than the toon ones which do their best to emulate flat cel shading and outlines
either way though you're going to want to just collect what neca releases and then wait for re-releases on the older ones, because hoo-wee yeah the prices.. keep an eye out for canadian sellers, they just got some cheaper ones and they're reselling. also watch out for chinese bootlegs.

The Cartoon line's been incredible, albeit frustrating to find. But if you grew up watching it, that's the most satisfying line to pick up. Getting a 2-pack with new characters to add to the roster really feels good. They're awesome looking figures, too.

Depends on the figure, in the case of Baxter I liked his Glow in the Dark when I bought it, so I wanted a regular version also. I also wanted more Mousers since they were an army builder, so I reasoned I could have extra Baxters to do whatever with or keep until they increase in value, or even part off with to someone just getting into the line who wouldn't care about the Mouser. I bought 3 Raphs: 2 first editions and 1 reissue. I wanted to make sure my Raph was the best looking for the best display purposes, but also just to have them as a fan. As for Mutagen Man, again I wanted a second. I also bought 7 Foot Soldiers but parted with 4 of them to pay bills, which was sort of a drag. My ideal number is 6 Foot Soldiers, I can never get enough of those guys and they were cool to army build.

As for mailing Mutagen man without his box, I'd just put him in a smaller box for the postal service, but wrap him in something to keep him protected so he doesn't get scratched or dinged and use a lot packing material so he's not bouncing around; often I tightly pack loose leaf paper in wadded up balls or news paper so it cushions a figure. Usually I put accessories in ziplock bags as well. I'd also clip out the character bio from his packaging and include that.

I feel like the accessories are about a $15 value(counting hands, heads, and weapons) and the figures themselves are justifiable as a $30 value, which is a little pricey, but some of the figures are pretty large and impressive when you have them in hand. Super7 said for the price they're asking they can afford to give the amount of accessories that they do give.

So I was right, they did use the original primary weapons and some of the secondary bits (Stars) but with extra pieces too (Canister, recycled shield, and a single original new prop)
Yeah I looked it up and Raph has the original toy's sai, I knew I remembered that. That weird little bent crosshilt that really isn't a proper sai

The "Real Rubbery Reptilean Feel" from the original card is replaced with a blurb about them being from the 90s movie. I guess that means these will be made of standard plastic? I'd actually be happy about that. The rubbery limbs didn't hold the weapons or stand very well, and I imagine time probably hasn't been kind to them.

The primary weapons may be the same but not giving them their other proper accessories is so cheap/lazy. And Splinter is just inexcusable. He didn't need the fur (they released him with and without fur back in the day) but at least use the proper fucking movie sculpt.

It's not an error, they reused the Splinter mold they already had, which may have needed to be recreated for the other retro sets. They either no longer have the movie Splinter mold or it degraded too much, and making a new mold for the figure would have been too much effort for Playmates.

Overall I like these better than most you guys, but I agree most people wouldn't think they're worth the money. TMNT just doesn't have the backlog of toys or the cohesion of aesthetics where remolds can really push your character library like Transformers can. Like if Playmates did a better job on their movie figures as far as giving them detail like half these ideas couldn't work.
