Was it ever even outright stated that the years they use in the MU are the same length as ours? The sundial in MNOG showed like 36 hours, so there's some (debatably canon, but who cares) precedent for defining units of time differently.

They were drawings of my MOCs. The term "femboy" prolly didn't even exist back in 2015. I only realized this now when I remembered a drawing I had where the MOC was in a weirdly feminine pose and had long hair.

I suppose this was all "Part of the Plan." Makuta needed the Toa Mata to reawaken Mata Nui, but their canisters malfunctioned, so he just propped himself up as a monstrous being and waited for someone to fix it.
Also, it wouldn't surprise me if part of it was his ego. He straight up got to be a god for a while and even was considered Mata Nui's equal and brother.

The Piraka only checked out Mangaia after Makuta's "death" from the battle with Takanuva, so I imagine most of the Brotherhood knew he was tormenting Metru Nui's former population. If the Piraka caught wind of Makuta's demise, then other people knew too.
As for the rest of the universe, as Dume, Makuta spent a lot of time sealing Metru Nui's sea gates (using those as excuses to have Toa killed) and effectively cutting it off from the rest of the world, so when he did his thing, Metru Nui was probably just a memory to most Matoran.

They probably just figured Dume was getting paranoid and then went into crisis mode after the Great Cataclysm, though they also had plenty of other shit to deal with during that catastrophe.
Also the Brotherhood did tighten their control on the MU after the Great Cataclysm, so they were probably keeping the Order busy with other things. Not like there'd be much they could do regarding Metru Nui's disaster.

Also, it's another carryover of the early 01-03 lore and one one of Makuta's several potential but scrapped early characterizations. He wanted to rule over the Matoran by keeping them on the island and stop them from reawakening Mata Nui, to "spare him pain" as he said in the movie. One of his descriptions even said he had good intentions but he was misguided in his ways.
Makuta was like some A.I. gone rogue, he wanted to protect whatever was inside the giant robot by keeping it in eternal stasis and making the Matoran live primitive and ignorant lives on the surface. Maybe it was to protect them from ever returning to the GBs who would have shut them off. But the whole idea that Makuta was a misguided but well intentioned protector got distilled once they introduced the expanded universe stuff around 04-05.

Stop projecting, anon. Ive got multiple MOCs on the horizon. A Euripedes hardsuit, a brown mata scale version of my brown toa, a better rc gearbox for my rangerover (while the inside is quite nice, the gesrbox is too weak to go up slopes atm).

It makes sense when you realize Heroes is just heavily reskinned version of other Lego games. It was impressive to turn 3d platformer into 3rd person shooter, but the rest is just collecting small bits, solving minor puzzles and coming back to levels after unlocking new powerups

Muaka and Kane-Ra actually had more, and Tarakava only had a couple dozen or so fewer. And as far as RC goes, I feel like it was just leftovers from Lego throwing shit at the wall and see what sticks. At that point they hadn't done too many remote control sets.

I always thought the Gali hooks looked like scallop-shell shaped jaws or something from the angle they're connected on the manas on the right. Like, instead of seeing the hook as going away from the camera I saw it as a ridge that raised up from a rounded piece.

Well thankfully, I write, draw, and worldbuild in my freetime too, anon. I even sculpt custom figs from time to time, in fact heres a pic of my perpetual WIP oc fig with somewhere around 40+ poa. Which is Tahu's best mask since the original Hau, and why is it the Uniter Mask of Fire?
The silver top looks wack, but the shaping and detailing are excellent. It's a better Hau Nuva than the actual Hau Nuva itself.

It's worth it. The RC functionality is novel, the parts are great, and they're just solid looking with all of the other 2001 rahi. No idea if they've spiked in price, but they were more than worth the cost when I bought them a few years ago.

Kind of reminds me of the Metrutoran. I only have Nuhrii and Vhisola but the masks look way better in person than on images, so I hope it's the same for the 2016 masks should I ever get them. The molds are great, even with the whole spiky anime hair thing they have for some reason.

Some of the 2016 masks really aren't bad, I quite like the Pakari.
As for the Hau, Lhikan's version is my favourite by far, followed by the OG one and then pic related. As bad as the Stars line was, it still had a few good parts and I like how the Stars Hau fits on Metru heads.

Hey /biog/, /m/ here, just found some cheap secondhand Bionicle toys in an online marketplace in my country.

Question is, are old clear components prone to breaking, even in 2021? There's this cheap Inika Jaller that seems good, only missing one or two projectile spheres (pic is the Jaller I'm talking about). Thing I did not realize is that it has clear components as its limbs. Not sure to take it now due to those components.

Don't have any full sets with trans pieces but I have a few of the pieces and they seem fine to me. Haven't used them much though.
If you just want to put him on your shelf to look at him it doesn't really matter, my Meltdown holds despite the fact that an entire half socket of his arm is broken off. My Metus and Strakk are fine too.
Inika should have the first and second of four socket designs, which is stable enough. Pic looks good to me.

Yeah, tires covering joints is something I used to do a lot, Ive seriously toned it down since, and just use them as gap filler in appropriate spaces, without stretching them. And yeah, I dont put serious effort in anymore since the 4k-ish camera I used to take photos broke last year.

All right, a day late, but I was out all day yesterday. Here's my Lariska build before the TTV tells me what she has to look like. Made her a Vortixx because I always pictured her as one, and that always made sense to me, especially considering her relationship to Nidhiki.
Gave her a kind of serpentine torso because of the association with assassins and seduction. I used silver to denote stuff that isn't part of her "natural" form, such as the daggers, mechanical arm, and hat. The arm is deliberately bulky and unwieldy - TSO probably enjoys giving potential threats handicaps like that - and the hat is a bit of a reference to the increasingly common "beetle Lariska" design, where she has those big horns.

I'm a bigger fan of them being depicted as masks, due to the fact Greg went as far as to give them the ability to eat with their hands, and most creatures cant survive without masks outside of a limited time and capacity. So eating through a mask seems unlikely in general. And stylization is fine, but even then, a lot of it is in poor aesthetic taste. Though I'm also in the minority that enjoyed the final movies near perfect set accuracy.

I personally like having face-like masks because it gives the sets a little more life and personality. Plus, I figure masks are the Matoran equivalent of faces since they all have relatively similar, mass-prdouced, expressionless robotic heads beneath the masks.

The way I often imagine it actually isn't far from the Miramax style, just with the big difference that instead of a semi-organic mask that more or less acts like a face, you have a semi-organic face obscured by a static mask. That means any facial motions are only visible as far as openings in the mask (mostly the eye holes) allow, which judging by some fan content is still enough to clearly show emotions. I'm even willing to compromise to the point of having slightly flexible eye holes, since at the end of the day Kanohi are super high tech magic stuff rather than simple wooden carvings. The Kaukau and Rau from the movies do come reasonably close, but could maybe still be a bit more rigid.

Not any of the previous anons, but I'd go with a sort of JtO-like approach where the masks had limited expression but they were still clearly shown to be masks separate from the characters' heads and they couldn't fully emote like the Creative Capers ones.
The thing about the original three movies is they gave the masks two separate "modes". They behaved and some even looked different depending on whether they were worn or not. Like the Mask of Light is flat and lacks the little prongs on the side when it's unworn, but it transforms into a functional "face" when it's on Takanuva. Some other characters have extra bits on their masks, like jaws that match the mask's design and just appear if someone's wearing them. This probably a leftover from the first Lewa mask animation test where Lewa's mask only covered the top of his face but his jaw was poking out on the bottom. Tahu even has tubes connecting his mask to his brain, like it's part of him. Many others have muscles visible in the gaps on their masks, and in Jaller's case these muscles disappear from his mask when he's dead, then reappear when he's alive again. So they didn't simply make the masks expressive, they went out of their way to portray the masks as if they were parts of the characters' bodies when they were worn. But when they take them off, the masks revert back to static objects and the "extra bits" disappear.
The directors used to work on Don Bluth animated films and they said they wanted to bring their experience from there to the Bionicle movies. It's a valid stylistic choice to make the toys look alive, but it's also a weird one for a franchise where masks were so prominent.

I don't plan on selling any of the sealed sets I got that I don't have multiples of. I usually only sell duplicates of sealed sets I got. No need for me to hog everything. Since I have as of 6pm EST,
2 manas sets sealed (yay local thrift stores),
1 manas set open box 3 bags sealed 1 bag open w all instruction manuals (I confirmed w bricklink/instruction manuals all pieces for the open bag (#1) was present),

I'd probably be able to sell both the sealed or open box manas set, pending selling to people outside of this board. I'd be looking for anything around the current bid price/last sales price for either lot, or a trade of similar value.

I'm on the fence whether I like Matoran/characters being able to rebuild themselves/others or not. On the one hand it's such an exotic and thematically reasonable idea, but it also feels a little transient, like things could change at the drop of a hat and nobody in-universe would care. I already struggle to justify how different Matoran would identify one another - obviously if there's a red Ta-Matoran wearing a Kaukau and a green Le-Matoran wearing a Pakari you can rell them apart, but what if there's two Onu-Matoran both wearing Hau and they have the same color scheme? Would one swap out his parts to another color to make him more distinct? Which one decides to change? Can a Matoran just get another Matoran's mask and swap his colors to mimic him? if so, why isn't it more common? Can Matoran tell one another apart using other, more subtle cues that we can't perceive? Do they have a hud that labels everyone around them? Do they all have basic "psychic" powers or even unironic psionic powers? Or is there some simple group like the Turaga that organizes everybody and determines color schemes and masks for them, and it'd be weird to swap them out? But we do have a couple instances of Matoran swapping masks of their own accord as well here and there, so surely that's not it. How does it work?

Otherwise yeah, definitely made of Bohrok parts. I guess that makes the Mata Nui Matoran all part Av-Matoran in a way?

Functional mouths are fine on the right masks but things like Robots eyebrows suggest they were crafted to playcate human creators. If anything, the point of masks is to serve as metaphor for the power a face carries, same as Eva's AT fields; they're as much the wall that isolates you from others as the tool you use to cooperate. Why do you think it was masks that were chosen to give characters their powers as opposed to just say, weapons? Is it to hide their identity? No. It's a commentary on how meaningful a face can be, if anything. It just shouldn't pretend to be a human face. Out of G1 Bionicle, what's in your opinion your least favorite arc/part of the storyline?
Here I'll start:
>Hordika was the only one I think felt a bit off. Sure I love the Visorak but the Toa designs themselves are one of my least favorites, not the worst but very close. Plus Roodaka helped accelerate the cooming aspect of mocs and I'm not sure whether to be glad or not about that.

I think Bara Magna would have been a lot better if it had just been a new franchise rather than a soft reboot of Bionicle. The setting was a good contrast to Bionicle's early years - sword and sandals instead of tribal island - and it had a lot of fun ideas for play features that went beyond just "new launcher."
Shackling it to Bionicle not only brought down Bionicle's story potential, but Bara Magna's as well.

I disagree. I think connecting it to the greater Bionicle narrative was a good idea. The real problem is that we never got that Elemental Lord year or the rest of the stuff planned for Bara Magna before Makuta showed up.
Also, really pissed how badly they botched Tuma in TLR. All the intelligence and culture of the skrall was drained out into generic badguys.

Toss-up between 09, 05 and some of 08. All had their positives though, so it's difficult to pick the one I like the least. I'm a sucker for atmosphere and nice looking settings, and so Karda Nui with its generic greyish-blue sky and swamp was painfully dull. Bara Magna had some nice village concepts but the desert stuff was too uninteresting.
I always thought they could have gone far crazier with the idea of a wrecked planet, but I understand they had to keep things basic so kids and new customers wouldn't be confused. But why a boring, unpleasant desert with gladiator guys, why not go straight to the dinosaur jungle planet?
I have more personal attachment to the Hordika stuff because that was the time I got deeper into Bonks, but it's a known fact that the whole set line and story only existed because of some Lego executive's demands, and it wasn't planned for originally. It was a mess both setwise and storywise because they just scrambled to make up shit on the spot.

Those Rahkshi really trigger me with those design differences and extra colors though. Rahkshi should be soulless clones with no variation between at all, sans colors and spine/staff designs.

bara magna did a good job of recapturing that aura of mystery from the early years that i feel started to dissipate on metru nui and the ignition trilogy as the size and the full scale of the matoran universe came into view

I think having different designs is fun. You could say it's maturity - the longer a Rahkshi lives, the more unique its appearance becomes. Or it could be a reflection of the Makuta who birthed it - different Makuta have different looking Rahkshi.
Hell, maybe some can be purpose-built with viruses and other stuff to handle specific duties or missions. Lots of options for creativity.

Speaking of Rahkshi, I took the inspirational Kaita and made some adjustments to the neck and back. This also makes it so the spine on the back is no longer upside down like fan instructions suggest.
Requires exactly 0 additional pieces and can be made with any 3 of them.

That is a cool Roodaka MOC.
Also 2005 gave us Time Trap, and decent movie (with the best animation Bionicle had to that point) and some really cool Titan and specialty sets like the Toa Hagah. It was an awkward year, but by no means terrible.

My Jaller has finally arrived, kinda late due to shipping distance though.

About my question about cracking clear pieces, I notice my Jaller here has (at least) one small/thin crack on its right knee joint, but it is still alright overall, not too wobbly.

And yeah it doesn't have the correct neon green projectile spheres, and its sword is out of battery. But is the battery replaceable? I notice some screws.

Well, if you ask me the Noble/Great Kanohi differentiation shouldn't even been established, as it wasted a lot of good designs (think the Av Matoran themselves) and implied that, in 2001, the Toa were using weaker Kanohi.

But, there had to be someone creating them, and technically if you forge something you can give it any shape you wish. But that wouldn't change the properties of the object.
Then again, the "shape =/= rule" was mostly given form to justify Norik's mask. Before that, it didn't matter much so no one was strictly enforcing it.

Hopefully I didn't misinterpret the point of your post.

My favorite is the Zatth because of its design and power; it looks like the combination of a space marine helmet and a bearded mountain man, but it also has a risky, shocking power that means any time the user actually uses it, people are going to have to get their act together. My least favorite is based on just aesthetics; ever since I was little I disliked the Noble Komau and the Noble Mahiki just because of their noses and wiring being asymmetrical. I don't think they're bad designs necessarily, but I never liked them. Runner-ups, however, are the 08 Makuta masks; they look good on the sets, but the idea of them looking like that with no alterations as the default look is just stupid, and it makes it hard to use them on other figures. But out of all of these, I think I can safely say that the Kanohi Nuva are the worst Kanohi, and without explanation to boot.

Different anon, but I agree entirely. Making Great and Noble masks have different molds does nothing but waste potential. In my headcanon I appropriate Noble and Great masks that I think are the inferior variation and use them as a different mask, canon or non-canon. Personally I also think if g3 were to ever happen and it were to be the best possible outcome they would have a massive, autistic registry of masks to collect and follow this "one mask = one power" rule strictly (I mean, exceptions ought to be allowed occasionally for flavor, but still).

I remember getting rid of my collection in middle school and a couple years later realizing its worth and trying to convince my mother and relatives who she gave it to to find it so we could sell it. As far as I'm aware, it was thrown away. I had so much... it would easily be worth 2000 dollars by weight alone nowadays.

I got a lot from some sort of wholesale dude who got them when the original owner moved or some shit. Had 99% complete Vezon & Fenrakk, Brutaka, Roodaka and Keetongu that I threw to meat grinder towards Kardas and Voporak since I had those already. Yes, I had the same problem plus a number of other annoying glitches. You downloaded the latest version off of biomediaproject, yes? After that one failed to work for me, I discovered I had an old copy dating from 2011, and to me surprise it is near-glitchless.

Have BMP’s versions gotten worse? It makes me wonder, as I suppose that MNOG2 is not played that often

It’s not completely broken, at least the version I played. The big problem is the way Ta-Koro’s destruction can soft-lock you at the very end, but iirc that has been a problem for the beginning. I also wonder if the training minigames being bullshit hard has to do with it being designed for older systems

Favorite, any of the 2001 masks. They're all GOAT. Least favorite, pretty much everything later. Metru masks were good but we didn't get any alternate colors, hordika masks are a joke, inika masks are a joke, mahri and phantoka and mistika look like something from another genre, way too scifi not tribal at all

Imo the Nuva masks are a pretty piss-poor upgrade to the original masks, the rounded edges make them look lumpy and they should’ve been designed to look more like upgraded versions of the originals rather than new masks entirely. Honestly the series as a whole never released any set lines that aesthetically topped the original Toa, the Mahri and Metri come close but the dampened color palate that started in ‘04 was a really poor choice on Lego’s part.

g1, hf, and g2 pretty clearly screwed this over with how often they'd introduce random new one-off pieces, and recolors of the same mold is all that they'd need to do to make the scenario ideal.

I’m sure someone else can find the relevant greg answers archive faster than me but basically the man said Destiny with a capital D, in addition to being literal AI preprogramming, is also somehow literal predestination. Wherever some MU inhabitant ends up is exactly what their destiny was. The actual question iirc was something like “What if a matoran dies before achieving his destiny?”, and Greg’s answer was that in that case, dying WAS his destiny. I see they’ve also used Tohunga instead of Matoran. I’m a pretty big yearwunner myself, but I don’t see how that’s “more faithful” when it was changed halfway into the game’s existence anyway. Still, this is by far the best version of the game we’ve had since the original release

Personally I just hope that both versions of MNOG1 get some of their bugs fixed; like Macku teleporting you to the Po-Wahi shore if you view her cutscene of the Tarakava attacking (even if you say "No" to going with her) in both versions, or the scene of Tahu looking back at Takua and walking off never appearing in the 2006 version, etc.
There are also a few invalid characters in a couple textboxes but nothing dealbreaking ever, usually just one or two bugged apostrophes.

There's a github for both of them, so hopefully all of those will be fixed sooner or later.

No, the language controversy happened in May of 2001, so all the in-game text was changed a few months later. Therefore, it’s a little misleading to say that it’s all the “original conversation text” when the later chapters had Matoran on release and never used Tohunga. I know I’m just nitpicking

Except there are loads of immediately relevant implications, like "what if an MU inhabitant interacts with a non-destined, unprogrammed being?" does their destiny give them immunity to interruption? What if two things have contradictory destinies? What stops veilka from making one matoran whose destiny is to just to prevent all other destinies from being fulfilled?

I mean, I can see the logic behind it. Av is an abbreviation of the Avohkii which was the Mask of Light. Since the Kraahkan is the Mask of Shadows then it would make sense for its prefix to be Kra.

My advice is to look at how lego technic/bonk/hf build the"blocks" of the mocs (the smaller sections you build and then put together to form the larger figure) and then look at non-lego toylines like transformers or something for inspiration for joint structure and similar.

Damn anon, I thought I was the only one doing this. Back in the days I was utterly flabbergasted by the decision to canonize the Avtoran masks as pre-existing Noble Kanohi. You had a shit ton of Kanohi powers without a canon design (Tuyet's and Helryx's, just to name two), and of all possible routes you chose that BORING one to appease some BZP-famous's autistic headcanon?

Heck, even Hydraxon's and Maxilos's "masks" were a disappointment. Calling them powerless was such a cop-out and a waste of good designs.

Maybe if Greg and his autistic aphantasia hadn't fucked up things back then, we wouldn't have to talk about this now. Then again, a fan will always push their headcanon no matter what. It's oxygen to >us.

I've said it before, but Bionicle isn't Lord of the Rings, and Greg isn't Tolkien. The lore, while still impressive, does not warrant having a backstory for every rock inside Matoran Universe.

Free will isn't required for a machine to behave unpredictably. Even humans having free will is a debatable notion. A culture might lack the concept entirely. I don't think providing a hard answer to the question has ever benefitted a sciemce fiction series.

There was/is a canon contest on TTV to create "canon" contests of all the different Bionicle characters that only appeared in books. Greg was involved, who would give his seal of approval to the winner. The first character was Toa Helryx, and one of the participants made this entry as a joke. It earned the name Noodleryx.

/biog/ and maybe other places didn't like the contests because they either thought the contests were stupid, or hated TTV for forcing people to use their site (and generally hating TTV altogether) - whatever the case, they banded together to vote for Noodleryx as protest towards TTV, asking Bionicle fans on other boards to pitch in like /b/ and /co/ I think, and we damn near almost one, but some people made duplicate accounts (on both sides), and Noodleryx just barely lost out by a few votes.

The entire event spawned a ton of fanart and re-MOCs (and a ton of seething from TTV users, and a lot of memes from all sides), which were genuinely really fantastic and high quality. I personally loved seeing how people interpreted the dinky lil build into something genuinely cool and badass.

The canon contest after this went by fairly smoothly, being for Artakha, and while most people agree the original winning MOC is shoddily built, the art for him and his mask was top notch, subtly adjusting the MOCs proportions into something NOT retarded (and the mask design is cumworthy to me).
Now they're taking an extended break to let people's heads cool off, before proceeding to the next characters.
