I'm for the first time ever going to try out one of those big sculptures made of basic lego bricks. My attempt is to recreate at least one martian from the Life on Mars travelling exhibit.

How should I go about recreating the design from reference images? How should a noob approach making a sculpture instead of a standard MOC? Should I use glue?

Have you tried reaching out to a professional? They're all probably neck deep in @handles and facebook logos.
Lego sculptures have always been other worldly to me. Like seeing the scale minifig made of bricks at the mall blew my kid brain.

hmmm, thanks but that's not quite right. I literally just want to make an exact copy of the ones in the park. If I just wanted any large sculpture of the martians I could just do that myself with modern pieces.

I know nobody liked them, but man, the Buildable Figures had so much wasted potential. Would've been sick to see a Clone scout or ARC trooper with a Technic AT-RT like we got with the Imperial scout trooper/speeder bike. It's like LEGO wanted the theme to die.

Missteps in the first few waves doomed the line. There were strong sellers in every release, but the amount of human characters with uncanny molds they made doomed the line before it could properly flourish. Grievous, Vader, troopers, etc. all sold just fine, even Sequel stuff like Kylo and Phasma weren't an issue. The only bad human face in the 1st wave was Luke, and he got a pass since you needed him to duel Vader. Rey, Finn, and to some extent Poe were all huge whiffs for the 2nd wave, and they were immediately followed by the Rogue One figs which once again had great inorganics - Death Trooper, K2 - and super duper duds in Baze, Chirrut, and Jyn. You can still find Jyn Ersos to this day in random 3rd party stores. Barnes N Noble had them down to 90% off at the bitter end. Even when they put out a few cool trooper/helmet figures every wave, the human ones fucked it up.

Note how the Helmets series is not making the same mistake - nothing organic outside of the Symbiotes, which are cartoony enough to be okay.

Nice work with the windshield, good to see you managed to move it back while keeping an overall good shape for the car, the tilted hood definitely helps a lot!

Could you do a render without the illuminated pieces? I kinda like renders that give back the feel of what a real set would look like.

Are there some parts you are still working on, like fitting in the a potential minifigure?

Honestly if this will fit some minifigs in, I think it will be a very close recreation of what the actual set might be (not counting the improvements you applied, like the height and stuff.)

Going to try to make a custom batcave over the next couple weeks, not one of those super mocs that's like 100lbs and costs thousands of dollars to make but just a basic batcave that combines elements from all the different caves. I'll be purchasing every Batcave except for the 06 and the 66, and combining parts of each into sort of a super-batcave.

The general idea is to use the 2019 cave as a base and separate each tower. I will put each tower on the old system bionicle set "castle" bases and attach a dock to one of them, ala the 06 cave. The towers will then be attached to the main computer segment through the ladder-style catwalks ala the 2012 and 2006 caves. I may switch out the 2019's cave-piece on the transformation tower for the computer screen used in the 2012 one. The plan is to incorporate the suit-rotator from the LBM cave to somewhere near the transformation tower. I'll then make a rotating center platform that stems from the "entrance" of the 2019 cave ala the 2006 cave, which will be built to fit the 2019 Batmobile. I'll use a mechanism similar to the A-Wing parking garage from the Home One.

I want to go for a comfy vibe with this set, nothing really overdesigned. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks for the feedback, the smaller front round lights don't fit anywhere without disrupting the shape, I will fiddle with it some more however.
Dropping the roof by one plate will make it too low, it also won't fit with the whole side body structure.

This is what I've got now, I fixed the B Pillars, I think this is how the official set does it because it's the only possible way to get that shape I think.

It's absurd that Lego hasn't tried this at all. A smaller CCBS that's more system compatible would be a great idea. The Nexo Knight mechs looks like they were dabbling with it, same with the recent Marvel mechs, but they're still not quite there.

I've been to a couple conventions and usually merchants are priced a bit above Bricklink. But it kinda makes sense, they're paying extra to have a booth so people can physically come, look and buy things in person so matching the lowest online price isn't really feasible.

Generally the best places are ones that do custom printing / molding. Those vendors are usually worth taking a peak at.

Side mirrors are way too far in front. As far as I remember this Dodge has mirrors much behind front pillars. Move them one or even two studs back. How did you make real pillar angle? What about replacing roof plate with 6x6 studies panel?

I'm sick of this fucking car. There's no way to get this roof/rear ruarter/taillights section right in this scale. 1 plate tail lights are too thin, one brich is too massive. Rear roof and pillar is a fucking nightmare too. 1x3 is already too long, since roof seems to be rather short and compact, then 1x3 slope doesnt come with that sideways angle. 1x2 slope is kinda too short.

i don't want to tell you how to build but honestly it feels like you're focusing too much on it being a 1:1 copy
if it was me i'd just preserve some characteristic features that make the car recognizeable and the rest of it can be just "close enough" since it's impossible to adapt every single feature perfectly due to the bricks' limitations

Yes I know, and I'm not trying to get 1:1, it's just about the most characteristic elements. For me simplified and most charateristinc are:

1. overall flat, wide rounded shape unlike any other muscle cars that are usually blocky and angular
2. high mounted bumpers
3. thin tail lights going through whole car width

These are 3 most characteristic parts of that car and you need to get them right. I don't give a shit about oval mirrors or so, but if can't get thin wide lights then it may as well be Mercury like this, which my model looks closer to indeed.

Step one is getting better lighting. I can give you a lighting tutorial I made if you want it.

Step two is to get a nice neutral background.

Step three is to pirate a copy of Photoshop and learn to play with the Shadows and Highlights tools to make the recessed areas of black pieces darker than the rest, and to create more definition between white pieces so they aren't featureless and fuzzy.

Were there running changes with the 2012 Lego Batman sets? My 2012 Batmobile has the newer cowl even though at the time Lego still used the wider eared one from the 06 line. It's always been like this.

Here is a lighting guide I made a few years ago; I currently use lamps with recessed bulbs and black metal shades that are much nicer than the cheap baffles shown here.

As the other anon said, when you improve your lighting, your pictures won't be as grainy.

They did eventually change them out. Some of the earlier versions of the newer cowl piece actually go down a little further than they should on the minifigure head making the head look wonky so I'm assuming it would be one of those

Well, I guess I have a nostalgic soft spot for adventurers era dinos, but the new dinosaurs are just too molded detailed. They don't look "lego"
They're also all the wrong size, which wouldn't be a problem if the sizing was consistent. The raptors are gigantic but everything else is smaller scaled. I guess it's to have them fit 2x2 studs on their back, but I feel like they should be more horse sized than anything. Then you could have a 2x1 brick space for proper riding. And maybe saddle compatible? A man can dream
Also gonna make this rant larger and realize that they're so big so that they can be in juniors sets and not be swallowed?

It's just hard to come up with something special. Egyptian theme had tombs, sphinx, massive temple, tiny chamber etc.. and vehicles. And I believe they could've put more. Maybe something to do with the river Nile, or massive pharaohs statue like? Jungle civilization wouldn't have sphinx nor massive statues. They covered all kind of shrines and vehicles anyway.

There needs to be a certain amount of pieces I think to differentiate a building toy and action figure, its why we've never had star wars cmf, I don't know if the license changed to allow for marvel cmf or lego just never used the opportunity until now

Something has been funny lately with /toy/ in particular. The other week I got a month long ban for spam but the mod didn't link any posts and I know for a fact I wasn't spamming anything. It got overturned by another mod, but it was really odd. The week before that I got a random ban with no description or link to posts, and again it was overturned. Then there's some threads that are obvious bait or have been derailed badly that stay up and some threads are like a ghost town with the amount of deleted posts.

Here's the interior, not sure what to do with the ground floor - the sofa is too fragile so I'll probably replace it with a table and chairs and maybe build a fireplace into one wall. Also need to swap that red 6x8 plate with one in dark tan when I find one.
