I guess I'm all caught up in the hype because I'm getting everything from the lineup so far. Though I'm thinking of cancelling my order for Clown. I really don't need him to have all those guns on his back (is that actually something from the books? or more just for fun), and with that permanent port on his back, he'd never look quite right without it. I assume they'll make another one down the line. Otherwise, looking forward to the full lineup. If the black and silver Redeemer has a cool enough weapon I may grab him too but I'd rather at least some remolded parts if I'm going to double dip on similar molds, like Gold Label Mandarin and regular.

It seems like no one can decide on what an MSRP anymore. Amazon stocking the lower end guys for 25, the redo of spawn for 20, meanwhile other places likt BBTS are going to 27 for the lower end guys. I liked the good ol days when stuff sold at MSRP in a store and that was it. No scalper price increases by the retailers themselves.

US MSRP is $25 for the regular assortment, $40 for Clown, and $50 for Violator. As some folks have mentioned, and yourself, this is the Manufacturer's SUGGESTED Retail Price, and so it's ultimately at the retailer's discretion what they want to charge. If BBTS wants to charge more, they're free to do so. You'll also find that Gamestop often upcharges from MSRP as well.

It was not about Angela. It was about McFarlane's attempt to seize control of the reprint rights to Miracleman including Gaiman's work on the character. Gaiman fought for Marvel gaining the rights instead, which they did. Gaiman also took Angela as a side effect of the lawsuit in order to deny McFarlane a little more reprint money (since so much early Spawn is dependent on Angela).

I kind of hate that Marvel ended up winning Mircaleman. I get that Gaiman wanted money from it, but going as far as to push the property into the hands of Marvel and thusly burying it just to spite Todd ticks me off. The different Hellspawns are separate characters entirely. If it was an alternate Al Simmons that would be the case, but it's not. So while Neil can't claim the hellspawn concept and take that character elsewhere because of it, he does deserve a creator credit and royalties for its use. Especially since the whole thing with Image was creating a new company with creator rights, that wouldn't fuck their talent over the way the big two did.

The thing is, individuals who buy toys, us the customers, are not the direct buyers of figures from the company McFarlane Toys, the retailers are. Target pays McFarlane Toys extra amounts of money to carry exclusives from them (just like Walmart does for Captain America figures, just like Target did for the Rise of Evil 2 pack, etc), more money in fact than if they also sold that figure to Walmart and Amazon and all the other retailers. So you see, it doesn't matter to Todd/McFarlane Toys, or to Hasbro, or to Mattel, if you can't find toys in stores because they already made those sales. It's up to that retailer to order more if they so choose, or if they think they're leaving money on the table by not ordering more, and if they don't, that's their choice. Would those companies love if those retailers extra figures so every person who wanted them could get them? Of course, that's more money for them and more happy customers, can they really do anything about it? Other than try to convince the retailers to buy more, not really.

As others have noted, Gunslinger will definitely be available again around the time his book comes out, or at the very least, new preorders for him.

I wouldn't mind a Zur-En-Arrh release before he cuts down on releasing Batman variants. Which of course is unlikely, but maybe someone will eventually tell him to concentrate on other characters too.

I actually far prefer his Miracleman redesign over the man of miracles one. Part of the reason I wanted Todd to win Miracleman to begin with was because of pic related. It's very evident Todd was eager to work with the character, and I cant help but wonder what he had in mind. Moreover, landing Miracleman into Todd's hands would have ensured the character would still be in use today rather than just locked up in the fucking marvel vaults never to be used again. It's not everyday that a golden age character outside the scope of the big two gets to survive into the modern day. Most end up forgotten and collecting dust in the public domain. Marvelman/Miracleman had a second chance after Moore and Gaiman revitalized him, and like the two old maids they are, they rather damn the character to eternal disuse and obscurity than actually let new people appreciate them. I meant Martian Manhunter. I'd imagine his redesign would be interesting, same with Fate. Maybe he could try something more dynamic with the capes. I know the Batman was originally intended to have a less neutral-posed cape, but he probably changed that due to feedback with the spawn kickstarter.

I feel like there's a core design element that he's been picking for his designs so far, Batman was the guy with the tools for any job, hence why he's loaded with stuff in his belt (and was originally going to come with a grapnel as well and maybe other things I can't recall), while Diana's is the warrior, decked out in armor with a huge sword and shield.

I've previously thought that maybe for Superman he'd lean towards tech, or maybe the paragon, though I'm not sure how you'd present that in an action figure. For MM I think he'd lean on the alien aspect, maybe make his body more unusual, his head less human, his arms with some alien parts sticking out, that kind of stuff.

Just a guess on how he's going about these designs, really, but I would like to see more. I do hope his WW has an variant that has paints more closely resembling that original art.

I recall Todd mentioned once that the license was anything, but maybe something was lost in translation, because it's hard to imagine they wouldn't have at least done a Klassic Ninja (though those do have costumes in MK11) by this point. So many justified repaints of a single mold, and of the most popular characters in the game. That's like the gold standard of action figure molds.

That's what I imagine as well. I would assume he'd get some swappable limbs or appendages but he hasn't even released a regular version yet so I doubt a special design is coming out soon.
Your take on Superman sounds about right, but we'll see. He may go minimal tech with it too. I expect the suit to be more complex than regular cloth though. Something closer to MoS but more alien and out there.

Where I'm from, you have to wait several extra months till a LCS has the releases, and when they do arrive, they're usually in a very limited number, so you have to grab them quick.
I missed the MK Spawn by a day or something because some other guy got the final one.
/toy/ collecting can be a bitch when you want to support local small business but at the same time live in the middle of fucking nowhere.
On a different note, does anyone have pic related and what do you think about it? It's the only one they have available and I'm the fence about it.

I was actually just thinking about grabbing it. I have the sword Spawn, and kind of want an axe too. The color scheme is intriguing enough I think, and the blood splatter seems appropriate. You can always wait for that blue variant of Spawn with the sword, and if you just want a basic Spawn, one will eventually come in the Spawn line, so one of these variants could be fun.

That's what I'm hoping for. The MK one seemed pretty nice as a default Spawn with articulation goes.
I missed out on the kickstarter but I might get one of those in the aftermarket eventually.
The bloody MK variant is still on the table but I'll think about it. Axe seems cooler than the sword imo.

Spawn got in MK which made some noise. Articulated Spawn action figure came out and was very popular. Spawn 300 came out and was extremely popular, and subsequent comics have been doing unusually well. KS Spawn happens and also does extremely well. Movie is getting made. McFarlane Toys's retail presence is stronger than ever. Basically a big storm of lots of things going right for Spawn and Todd, and it's the best chance there may ever be to do what he's trying to now. And aside from 3 new titles being made in comics, there's now also the Sam and Twitch show that got greenlit.

Would love to see a Deluxe Spawn with wired chains, tons of guns, and maybe even a wired leathery cape. His cape and chains are a big part of the character, the costume basically being its own character, so at some point I feel like a Spawn that emphasizes that aspect of Spawn has to happen at some point.

This is why I personally respect Todd. Of the original image founders he was the onky one who used his money wisely. Diversifying his entrepreneurial ventures beyond comics was a brilliant call on his part, especially given where comics ended up by the end of the decade. Meanwhile, as the other founders floundered and eventually ended up back at the big two, Todd just kept chugging along between toy sales and spawn runs. I think the main reason for the comic sales pre-300 being bad was not so much related to Spawn being an unpopular character, but due to the fact that when the average person sees such a large number, they assume they'll have to read a whole bunch of issues beforehand.
That's why DC and Marvel books often start numbering their new releases starting from issue #1. It seems more convenient for a new reader to jump into it. I get the reason why he chose to keep the Spawn issues accurately numerated, but it's not very normie-friendly.
Issue 300 sold well because it was a record breaking issue, but also because the previous few had some story recaps as to what had happened up until then.
With these new books like Spawn's Universe, Gunslinger, The Scorched, etc, he'll be able to draw in new readers from issue 1, and there will be an increase in sales.

He recently talked about this in an interview and basically said that when the movie gets released that will further trampoline into other opportunities like video games, animation, etc.
Progress on the movie is being made behind the scenes, but because he's been talking about it for so long, and still doesn't know when exactly they'll start shooting, he said he'll only talk about it when he has exact info on the date.
He did say that he hopes to announce specific details on the movie by the time the new comics have had a few issues out and he kind of hinted that the entire thing may be tied in some way.
There have also been some rewrites in the script apparently and he said a pretty big name is attached behind the scenes but they preferred to remain anonymous at this stage in development.

The reason why they do that is because issue #1s always sell well. Plus, they balloon the sales numbers by releasing a shit ton of variants, so the numbers are almost always artificial with Marvel and DC.

The bigger issue people have is having to hop across a dozen different titles to follow one "event" or big storyline. This has never been a thing with Spawn. There have been some short spinoffs, but they rarely tie in to the main comic, and most of those are only a couple issues anyway.

Big fucking agree with that. That was the major contributor to why I stopped picking up comics. Fucking hated having to pick up several issues of unrelated characters I didn't give a shit about just to get the full story and not be lost. Always waited for the compendium afterwards to come out.

With Marvel in particular, the multiverse shit was always a bit confusing imo, because you had your 616, Ultimate, and a bunch of others, and casuals often couldn't differentiate between them. DC has had this too, but not to such an extent. The confusion there came mostly from reboots and universe altering events.

I disagree a bit with Todd's assessment there, the hair is the dead giveaway. Also a well drawn Superman has an approachability to him, with a warm smile and all that, which I think Todd captured pretty well, so it's not just the costume (though he was kinda joking).

If we're just talking Superman level as in flies super strength, etc, that's one thing, but actual Superman level is quite a bit stronger than anything in the Spawn universe, I'd think. You could bring up weakness to magic and all that, but then it almost becomes trivial. Outside of being a throwaway, I can't picture a Superman fitting in well in the universe. If the actual Superman was in a crossover, I think that would have potential for a pretty good story.

At the time Spawn was being created, he kind of made it clear that he wasn't going for the Supermen and Spidermen and something different, so I'd imagine he's not exactly a fanboy, but he does recognize the importance of the character.
As far as power levels go, I guess from a physical standpoint there aren't many who could challenge Supes in a direct fight. Magic is always a wild card, but he has often found ways to deal around that.
If a Superman would to exist in this universe, it would be some kind of inversion imo. Definitely not the classic version.

The whole point of Miracleman getting put in was to get that Alan Moore cred in the comic. On its own there's no draw since Superman expies are a dime a dozen. Same reason why Liefeld specifically wanted Moore writing Supreme and got upset when Alan Moore tried to hand off the scripting to Steve Moore instead.

Keep in mind Gaiman got 100k for the issue and didn't have to design the character. Todd did. Which amounts to, basically, "Angel who hunts Spawns". There was no written contract or anything, And honestly Gaiman being able to then take that design and sell it strikes me as way more egregious than anything considering ultimately there's more of Todd's DNA in Marvel Angela than Gaiman by virtue of everthing related to her character history being stripped. She is pure (McFarlane) visuals

Ironically the 1000k upfront is probably more than he would've gotten if he was getting a more typical comic script rate with royalties since as Capullo says Image/McFarlane royalties are random. And definitely way more than if he created the character for Marvel upfront. Which is till fucked up and Todd is way too old to still be doing things randomly like that, but still, I don't cry for Neil.

Thats why they did it yeah. Ive been lookiing into this big midnight sons event at marvel during the boom days and the 19 !!! Part crosover included silver sable and spiderman of all titles. What broke my back was the reign off supermen story. I bouught them all and really enjoyed it but like when supes came back they published a tpb of the story. I spent lots of allowance and yard cutting money following that story only to see it on the stands in collected form for 29.95 just a few weeks after it ended.

If you're talking about an articulated one, either the MK11 or pic related. The kickstarter Spawn is also good but will be harder to find.
If you're talking in general and don't mind less poseable ones, there's a lot. My personal favorites are i07 and Spawn 9 Series 29.

If you're less patient though, monthly releases are more convenient. As far as Spawn is concerned, this at least hasn't been an issue, since it's been pretty easy to follow for a few decades now.
But the more you branch out the story into different books the harder it gets to follow.

This brings in power scaling problems. Unless he's killed by some technicality, unless Spawn is way stronger than I think he is, Spawn is nowhere close to Superman level, and if not him and it's someone else who kills this analog, then how does this guy then get taken down? Endless problems.

But then again, if there was chance for a new, unusually strong enemy, now might be the time, given the first iteration of the Scorched team is 4 Hellspawns and a Redeemer, something has to be able to challenge them.

Spawn is pretty OP in terms of powers, even before he became "divine spawn" or whatever. His main weakness is that his power meter can be drained, but they kind of scrapped that gimmick a while ago so I don't know if it still has any bearing here. He can range from street level to potentially planet busting or universe busting at his strongest (when he was aided with divine intervention).
Superman's main advantage is his sheer physicality and speed. I'd say it's a fair match up overall.
The Scorched as a team would conceivably be pretty powerful but when you introduce a magic threat or a reality bender to the equation anything can happen. The easiest way to dispose of a Hellspawn is to use a heavenly weapon and cut off the head, or lure him into the dead zone where his powers don't work.

Does anyone know how it really works? Has Todd ever discussed it in depth? It started at 9-9-9-9, then it seemed to go down fairly arbitrarily.

Also how is it that when he saved Terry did it drain him sufficiently that it brought him to Hell? He previously saved a homeless fellow, and it didn't drain his meter all that much. And before Terry if I recall he was at 6-x-x-x so it isn't like he was running on empty.

IIRC he could recharge his power meter just by being surrounded by negative energy, certain animals like rats, bats, snakes, insects, worms, etc, all manner of "cursed" life basically. In reality the only thing that keeps a hellspawn in check is this imposed power limit. The symbiote itself is like a green lantern ring that is only hindered by your imagination. Its been ages since I read the earliest Spawn stuff, but I remember that every Spawn had the meter, and that was because of Malebolgia. Once they expended the energy, they went back to hell. I remembered that he expended all that was left when he revived Terry, but I don't remember exactly why he used it all up. Wasn't Terry sick too, and Al removed whatever was there? The meter was tied to Malebolgia too, and at one point, Al killed Malebolgia, so the meters didn't really make sense anymore anyway. I really don't know why they'd be back, but I have to admit, I haven't read Spawn in maybe a year and a half, so I should probably get back to it, as well as re-read a lot of the old stuff.

He was spared of most consequences for his actions in the beginning, because he was an important asset in hell's army. And by the time the hell lords decided to do something about it, he had already grown too powerful.
He did die at some point but it was due to suicide (which happened in the dead zone I think), but he came back eventually.
It's been a while since I've read the early issues so there's some things I don't recall that much anymore.

Terry had a large cancerous tumor in his brain, and was currently in a coma when Spawn healed him. But quite a while before this, one of his homeless friends, Bobby, was literally shot in the head and killed by Chapel, and Spawn expended some power to bring him back to life.

This brought him down to 7:0:1:2 (the meter was shown right after he fixed up Bobby) from 7:1:7:4 (seen in the previous issue). So if a literal resurrection took that little energy, I don't see how fixing up Terry would have taken up so much (previously seen at 6:7:8:6). Maybe something silly like when it becomes 6:6:6:6 he gets brought to Hell?

There's a lot going on in the current book, which I guess is why all the new books are coming out. Spawn will perhaps continue as it is, King Spawn will be focused more solely on Al, Gunslinger on Gunslinger obviously, and Scorched on the team, and probably the lesser known characters on it at the time, hopefully spotlighting them as it goes, also as a way to make them more popular.

Speaking of the comic, the next Spawn issue comes out tomorrow, and it also marks Sam and Twitch's return to the comics. With a show being worked on for them (though it hasn't been purchased yet), plus their return, think a 2-pack for them could be in the cards? I used to only know of them from afar but while reading the old comics (though I'm still far from being caught up) I actually really like them. They're a lot more interesting than I gave them credit for.

If they were made into figures I assume they'd get a somewhat realistic remake since they're usually drawn in a very exaggerated and comical way (from what I've seen). I do remember their old statue, that looked pretty cool. Would you guys buy it? I think I'd be in for one.

Fair point about wanting the sure hits first. We know She-Spawn is coming, and with her they've knocked out 3 of the members of The Scorched, I can't help but feel Medieval will also be coming in that next wave. I could also picture Al getting made soon, perhaps a regular version, but maybe we'll also get artist specific versions, like today's revealed cover for King Spawn by White Knight artist Sean Gordon Murphy.

And then maybe another classic Spawn. Since Raven wasn't in any of the covers, I won't assume it'll be a Spawn that was on the covers like Ninja Spawn. Or they could always start banking on some of the newer characters like Disruptor, who by the time the next wave happens, will probably be at least somewhat established in the comics.

I think Raven was a great choice, I think he's more villain than good, and he's a classic character that many would recognize from the past. If they went straight for Al and Medieval, that's all they A/B Lister's from the current books out of the gate. And since they have plans beyond the first wave, they didn't need to throw everything out right away. I'm sure Todd personally wants the line to have a nice long life, so smart releases will be a part of that.

I don't think they'll ever do it aside from a resin statue. Todd said his primary decision making is based on what the 15 year old version of him could afford.
That's why the paint jobs with some of these figures are at times more basic and unfinished, the prices would go up if they added more stuff.
I do think there will be more deluxe versions in the future, like with that Mandarin Spawn.

Todd said he'd struggle to find a way to price a figure that high, as in terms of cost to manufacture, and value to the customer, that's a fair bit to consider. An action figure, especially of a human shaped character, can only be so elaborate, but they could do little things, like no pins, inset joints, things to make it cut a very clean silhouette. Then Spawn has an absurd cape, and I assume a high quality materials, wired, and tailored cape would cost a fair bit to manufacture. Then there are metal chains, possibly also wired, tons of guns, tons of paint on everything, other weapons, lots of effects, maybe even an elaborate stand Spawn could stand on that would make for a really nice centerpiece, and I'm sure the costs could add up. Such a project would seem suitable for KS.

Disaster indeed. I'm perfectly happy with just Spawn, there's already so much content in there. There are always the various Golden Age heroes that are Public Domain, if ever McFarlane wants to do more hero figures. I'd bet a lot of those heroes, like Phantom, Zorro, and others are more well known and would probably sell better than most Image characters.

I think the trades of the earlier stuff are pretty easy to find these days. For a while, it seems like a lot of trades were harder to get, but I think they've done a better job keeping them in stock.

Might as well start at the beginning, but I'd almost recommend starting at 250, because that's when Al comes back as Spawn after something like a 70-80 issue run of some other guy being Spawn.

nah, that actually makes it easier to license.
You can literally just choose the cream of the crop to make toys out of, instead of being weighted down with C and D listers that a licensor only uses to pad character count to increase their licensing fees.

Cyberforce got fully eclipsed by Witchblade and Darkness, seriously Top Cow put every drop of jizz they could muster into those two titles and they carried the studio to more success than they could ever have imagined.

Youngblood is fucked because Liefeld sold his character rights to two other people so you have three people owning the various series. Why Rob didn't insist he keep Youngblood is fucking baffling to me, instead he kept like Brigade.

fun thing about all this is that McFarlane could still license the Maxx, because of how cheap it actually is to license (Shocker Toys got it, so why couldn't any bigger company?) and make WildCATS for "free" since he already has the DC license.

Cyberforce and so many other forgotten Image series can be had for cheap too.

The question though, is it bankable? And who will carry it?
McFarlane had to prove his much more popular Spawn character to mutliple vendors by raising funds on Kickstarter, proving it's a million dollar property still.

How can that be done for Shadowhawk when he's not the owner for that character, or other creator owned properties?

If it was still the 00s, with TRU, KB, Suncoast, Sam Goody, and Hastings still operating, there'd be no problem in making a new Image Anniversary line. All of these are gone now, so it's far less viable to produce a toyline like that anymore.

Between shit like this and Larsen's handling of Supreme I genuinely grew to hate him. I dont even know why he still makes comics at this point. Dragon has sold like shit since the mid 2000's and Larsen's other notable characters (Mighty Man, Freak Force, Super Patriot) barely see any use now. The most they get is cameo roles in books Larsen works on. It's especially odd cause he can still put out a book of relative quality. His recent TMNT book was a solid case study for that much.

From the looks of it, they will just be repaints with little difference from the regular releases.
It could make some people lucky if these premium variants end up being expensive in the aftermarket, but it's a bit of a gamble situation obviously.
I don't much care for the idea either, I'd rather just have Deluxe versions.

Because they can no longer come with guns, and they're also removing additional details that coincide with the guns. Peacemaker lost his holster and his ammunition pouches, for example. And so future versions of say, Red Hood or Joker, or characters like Deadshot (who honestly probably won't even be allowed to be made anymore) or others who use guns will be able to come with them. If they were to release a new Grim Knight, he wouldn't be able to come with any guns.
