Much like how some argued that the Legends Arcee was a prototype for MP-51, I think the SS86 line as a whole was a subtle attempt by Takara to get a chance to redesign some characters for v2 MPs in the future. I do think the SS86 Hot Rod is the best version of him so far, and if someone could make an improved version of it in MP scale I'd be all in. It really doesn't need much else other than maybe an ab crunch, a teapot hinge and individually articulated fingers. I'm not a completionist so I never bothered to get Hoodlum or MP-28, but with the onslaught of MP Springers all being more than decent, it has revitalized my interest in MP scale representations of the '86 cast.

I still prefer LG Headmaster Roddy for many personal reasons, but I do agree this guy looks very nice, and if I didn't already own LG and the MP, I'd probably pick him up.

Balls to that. The Transformation is annoying. You have to bend plastic past its intended tolerances just to get the legs into position for car mode, the arms are annoying to get into position, the clips on the exhaust pipes WILL eventually snap off, and after you get it into car mode it always looks as if it's about to explode.

Mine did on the left side. £32 figure, transformed twice, broke, back in the box. I'm no ham-handed ruffian like bobby skullface, never broken a figure like this. Even after all the warnings about SS86 Jazz I had no issues there. Hotrod tho...

Just transformed mine back and forth, and done so about a dozen times before, never had any of those problems you've described. Maybe I just got a particularly good copy? Or maybe I'm just autistically careful with him? I dunno, but I love Hot Rod, probably my favorite figure I've gotten so far this year.

Mine, while it has some minor chipping issues, has been transformed multiple times back an forth without damage. Guess you kind of just got fucked by QC.

I can agree that the transformation isn't quite as intuitive as quoted in OPs post. The legs are especially a pain to get into position.

Not that anon, but show me a pic of your copy in car mode, let me see those headlights pieces that are impossible to get completely aligned with the rest of the hood so everybody here can notice you're lying or just have low standards.

I love SS86 Hot Rod, I really do, but the car mode makes me think some measurements and tolerances are off slightly.

I'm >>9214268 and not >>9214347 . Like I said, maybe I did just get really good QC on mine but the headlights line up pretty much perfectly in car mode, and the legs transform pretty smoothly unlike what >>9214204 and >>9214297 say.

Because it's wrong. Ideally Transformers should fake as little of the transformation as possible and make use of the actual vehicle parts. Faking the chest is lazy engineering, especially on something as simple as a car chest transformation.

Rodimus managed it without faking the chest. Heck, the MP did a fine job (would have been better if it hadn't included the matrix gimmick he never used in that form though). Hot Rod absolutely did not need a fake car chest.

I also wouldn;t say the figure is lazily designed at all, the rest is pretty complicated, there's no way hot rod would be done at the Deluxe price point, so it's not like an ERcee where there's no real transformation and the entire robot mode is one fake part, or like some of the new MPs that are so overengineered that even the most basic vehicle details that would carry over to robot mode are fake
I'm not a big fan of fake parts either, I'd kill for an Optimus that doesn't have fake grill abs, but I'm more willing to make compromises for an otherwise really fucking good retail figure than a fucking premium priced MP or an action figure wearing a car shell

There is a subgroup of this fanbase (like every fanbase) who is so blinded by nostalgia and jaded that literally nothing the gatekeepers of their precious franchise can do will please them.

No figure is perfect, SS86 Roddy sure isn't but the overwhelming consensus is that he is the best attempt at a figure so far.

And while it can be called a "flaw" having a couple of "faked" kibble to meet the expectations of certain aesthetics while maintaining at least decent budget/engineering I think most of the non autistic fanbase doesn't really mind

Anything using the existing IP is a bootleg or knockoff. Some are aggregious, like when they steal the literal molds. Others are less, like third party original toys based on official art.
Some third parties do it right, and basically just use the base IP for inspiration, but make their own unique take on it. The ultra magnus that looks like something outta studio trigger comes to mind, or the scorponok that has a super articulated tail
Bootleg is an item produced without the legal permission to do so.
Knockoffs are bootlegs that steal the molds.
"Third party" is filled with both, as well as legal third party licensors.

The toy itself is fine, about as good or slightly better than the TR Blurr mold, but with better colors. The main issue for most is that the head is terrible, and not having any wheels so it can't roll.

Yep, not the worst ones I've seen, but still not flush. More or less like mine. Also the red panel with the spoiler isn't completely flush either when compared to the windshield, a problem all copies have. I believe that's the thing that makes everything else don't fit as nicely as it should.

Picked up Origins Bee today and boy do I hate that packaging. Not only does the open window make it prone to scratches (2/3 had noticible scratches on the chest), but the cardboard feels barely any stronger than construction paper. 1/3 had a really fucked up box, and I imagine that will be a common thing because it doesn't take much.

You also need to leave the Roof fully transformed at all times (not compact when in robot mode) since the clear plastic needs to flex a lot for that minor transformation. I did manage to do a minor fix so most of the clear plastic would easily go over without flexing of too much strength, but it's still a shit show.

I regret wasting my money on this thing, and I hope no one else buys it or Road Rage. I'm also ignoring the future deluxe tracks because I know they'll fuck it up as well.

Oh and I should add what I meant by strength. The entire clear plastic shell has 5 points where it connects to the regular plastic, two spaces at the sides, one square space below the hood, and the real problem, two tabs that are meant to keep the hood in place. The two spaces at the sides need to flex a bit (still need to fix those), but the major problem are the tabs since they're way too long and it makes un-tabbing the hood a fucking nightmare. I almost shaved them down completely and now they work as intended (keeping the hood in place, but still easy to remove).

The feet (aside from being on ball joints and loose right out of the package) are connected to the blue sides of the car/legs and these bits are VERY loose. The idea was that the grey bits in-front of the legs would connect to them via a small 'l' shaped tab to the side, but they didn't make it long enough, so it can't connect to the blue section.

Unrelated to all the previous problems, the head has almost no articulation, the corners stop the head from rotating further.

nah the headlights are pretty flush, there's just some overspray with the silver bit on the shoulders. The spoiler panel doesn't sit completely flush, but it's not too bad and literally everything else does, so I must have gotten really lucky with QC or some anons have just gotten unlucky. Either way, I'm not "lying or just have low standards", I just straight up have very little issue with my boy Hot Rod. Maybe one of these days I'll go in and try and shave some areas to get the spoiler to sit more flush but I can deal with it for now

Very very fun in robot mode due to the massive shoulder articulation. Buying a $10 gun off of ebay for him also improves him huge. Definitely the best deluxe of the line for me, though I think that's more because BA just isn't fun to pose even if she is a more technically impressive toy. Cheeta mode is kinda whatever but he pulls of action poses well enough and is certainly miles better than every other Cheetor we've ever had.

Eh. The Netflix repaint is 4 quid more and plus it doesn’t cover the legs on him. Also, the shade of blue on the Netflix repaint feels like the between blue of primal and dinobot which I feel would majorly mess up any displays I did. Really articulated robot mode, with the only real limitation being the hips can run into the waist in some poses just because of the shapes getting in the way. Also one of the best looking beast modes I've ever seen, it's a really good cheetah mode, small bits of robot kibble on the rear legs aside. My copy is pretty solid, I can pick him up by his toes and he stay in place.
Only bummer is the lack of a gun for me, but I started to like the tail whip thing and have a bunch of surplus guns so its no big deal. If you think you'd like him I say give him a chance anon

The only breakage that's common on him is the tab behind the neck that is supposed to hold the beast mode head in place. But it doesn't actually do anything at all and it breaking won't affect anything whatsoever. Actually don't know why it was there in the first place. I also do really suggest getting the actual 3p upgrade kit off of ebay. It does alot for him having the show accurate gut gun, especially with Tigatron having his as we've now seen. Actually hides in beast mode pretty well too, which at least is a huge plus for me.

I like headmasters but it would suck if every single transformer was beholden to one single gimmick outside of transforming. variety is part of why I like these things, and some characters just dont work as them. IMO a gimmick is best when there's characters that are built around the gimmick, instead of arbitrarily forcing preexisting ones. Some will work, but a lot won't, and it really limits things like head design and transformation for a lot of cases

Both to be honest, ER had better articulation but torso looked too short and his legs were remold from siege. Siege one was covered in bd, didn't go fully for cybertron altmode (somewhere on the internet you can find concept art for a better option) and his diaper limited leg posing - this mold shines as Nemesis.

Good(?) news(?) is that iirc it's Rodimus with the moustache, and not Hot Rod. Bad news is I don't know if there was a point in SG where Hot Rod became Rodimus. So they might just make SG Rodimus.. but with a Hot Rod altmode? Anyone versed in SG stuff care to comment? Albeit it's IDW2, so there's always a chance that they might go for no-moustache, regardless of what they do.

I still had Megatron until recently as well. I think I let him go because something was either broken, or some armament had gone missing.
Not to suck my own dick here, but beside loving Primal, as well as the toy when I was a child, but other than one of the missiles a little worse for the wear, as you can see, the only thing missing is possibly his other sword. And honestly, I'm pretty sure it is somewhere around here. Just need to find it.

Partsforming's only really bad when it's the result of slack engineering, the headmaster brand of partsforming is deliberate and the designer has to engineer the toy around it. Titans Return was fine, since that was the whole gimmick of the line. It’s a shame that the Targetmasters and triple changers got lumped with the gimmick, but beyond them and actual headmasters, I think the only extras thrown in were big names like OP/Megs/Soundwave as well as a nobody easy repaint (Krok).

I've said it before but for me it was the stupid spring-loaded collar gimmick that was the deal-breaker. At least the headmasters still function, whereas some of the voyagers just didn't have waist rotation because of that (arguably pointless) gimmick

I just wish she had a waist swivel, but her current transformation really doesn't allow for it, other than that she's solid (though her weapon isn't very secure in beast mode, and can't store away anywhere decently in robot mode.

They are made from clear plastic if you do bee careful. I think it's better to leave them as they are for bot mode.

I shaved them at an angle so it would still catch the sides properly. Hopefully, they last longer that way. I really wish they figured out a different way to have the sides fixed in place.

personally i'm sceptical of whether he'll be able to get a company of the ground since he seems like a very difficult person to work with, despite being a talented 3D moddler.

imo i think he'd gain alot of goodwill if he just explained what he plans to do with the designs rather than flying off the handle at anyone who asks a legitimate question. even a pinned tweet saying "my files are not for sale, you will be able to buy them as figures eventually" or something would suffice.
