You can still source parts from other kits for your builds, but the basis of your entry has to be at least 50% Zaku (ie: Swapping out the bottom half of a Zaku II with a Dom to make a Zaku II High Mobility Test Type would be acceptable, but throwing a Zaku head onto a Dom won't cut it). The 50% limitation refers only to the body itself, you're free to do what you wish with your suit's equipment.

Send all photos (Both WIPs and Finished photos, with multiple angles/poses) and a short description of your build to [email protected] once you're finished. Additionally, please state whether your home board is /m/ or /toy/ when you're submitting your entry. This information will remain private and won't be referenced with submissions, I just want to know which /gpg/ each entry represents.

Had a test with Mr. Crystal Color Amethyst Purple on a piece (not Gunpla admittedly but as it was spare and was absolutely perfect for testing on, why not). Sprayed it over GX Ueno Black, thinned with just a touch of Rapid Thinner (might try Levelling Thinner next time) and then clearcoated with GX Super Clear II Gloss. Thought I'd fucked up the clearcoat by using Rapid Thinner, but misting Levelling Thinner over the piece solved the problem completely. Anyway, this stuff is fantastic- gonna have to run some more tests to see if I can get it to do the "black with a purple shimmer" look rather than just dark metallic purple, but I'm extremely impressed, especially with the clearcoat.

When applied properly Crystal Color is not supposed to be this glittery.

Also, it doesn't need gloss coat (which is probably what made yours glittery), glossiness of the black underneath should be sufficient.

Proper metallic coats are very thin and delicate in order to look like metal. Subsequent coats inevitably attack the metallic coat and you get glitter etc.

If you absolutely must have a clear coat over metallic, there's Alclad AquaGloss, but it may cost you your airbrush.

You can just coat it with pic related. Top is old bottle, bottom is current branding. Just brush it right on, no dilution. Use an old brush maybe because it’s hard on brushes.

dude, without polishing that's semi-gloss at best and it might not level fully if you handbrush it

it's made for floors where you pour from the bottle for a nice thick coat, it's not made for thin coats on tiny plastic parts

No, the shoulder pylons store weapons and equipment. Every Eva has a knife in one, Unit 02 has like a spike launcher in the other. I'm not sure in the original series we see what's in unit 00 or 01's other pylon.

Hey gunplamos,

I'm going to be painting JUST the parts on the MG shining gundam that should be gold.

I WAS going to spray the parts gray or black and then brush on gold paint that's been diluted.

Is there any among you that feel it should be 2 layers of spray?

Here's a mind-expanding thought for you: don't spray black or gray, spray gold over bare plastic. Out of the box bare plastic surface is much smoother than anything you can manage at your level, just be sure not to mess it up with sandpaper or files. Cut the nubs if there are any where you're planning to paint, but don't sand them. Oh yeah, don't forget to wash it.

Don't brush on metallic paint, or any paint besides very small details. Airbrushing gives the best results, but its not easy. Rattlecans are a close second but can be tricky in their own way. Your undercoat is quite important for making your paint stick and it changes the vibrancy of a coat considerably. I often sand the entire surface at 5000-7000, especially if the surface has any sort of friction (like joints), clean the surface thoroughly after sanding in a dust free environment. Then its time to prime in black or grey (for metallics) Check out this guide (http://gunplacore.blogspot.com/2013/04/tutorial-different-metallic-paints-and.html) I really recommend doing tests on spoons. It helps in so many ways besides choosing a colour, its particularly important for getting distances and intensity right when using a can.

If you want an idea of the airbrush process, this guy does a good job without going too crazy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uRMdJsjN-4). But watch as many guides and techniques as you have time for, or choose a "look" that you like and research the methods, theres a lot of ways to go about painting and theres a load of chemistry involved with combining/thinning/top coating models with different colours and types of paint for different finishes and effects.

That's what I thought too when I had no experience with metallics, but that rule is far from absolute.

Pic related is Alclad Hi-speed Silver over bare white plastic, as white as a spoon. Looks just as shiny as over gloss black for all practical purposes. How do I know? I tried both.

Quality of the surface >> color of the surface. Priming for lacquer paints is unnecessary if the surface is already good.

how it looks vs how it is are two very different things but you probably know that. You can scratch the paint off a very smooth un-primed surface pretty easily. "Quality of a surface" is also vague and not very helpful to someone new to the hobby. Paint is going to fill in small gaps, especially if you layer. Sanding and priming optimises a surface for additional layers of paint regardless of the finish you want to achieve at the end.

Priming is not remotely necessary with stronger solvent based paints. Acrylics can scratch very easily if they aren't quality or mixed well, but even they can be sprayed directly onto stuff and give you a much smoother and cleaner finish than many primers. Toss a nice hard clear coat over it and durability may not be any issue at all

those are colored paints, not metallic which has really good coverage/dense paint particles, arguably better than primer in some cases.

Actually no, you can't, unless you use metal tools or something. There was quite a bit of masking over that metallic coat too and none of it lifted.

The simple fact is that someone new to the hobby is unlikely to achieve the smoothness of bare plastic after they spray a coat of primer and/or a coat of black gloss. Spraying metallic paint from a can over washed bare plastic will likely result in a better looking metallic coat than spraying over undercoat of questionable quality.

Your pic related is misleading. It shows what happens in a controlled experiment (after spraying one coat of color over given primer). Spray another coat or two of paint with good pigment density like MrColor and the differences will disappear.

Yes it does. For metallic to be shiny the surface needs to be smooth and any imperfections will show up immediately. Spraying a second coat of metallic all but removes the color of the surface from the equation but no matter how many coats you spray the imperfections will be there.

There simply isn't any point in arguing with a person that has never actually tested or tried, and doesn't understand how paint adhesion (in particular with non-water based paints) work. Primer exists to cover up imperfection and create an even base layer. While it CAN help with adehesion in some situations it simply isn't necessary. Even more so on display pieces that aren't going to be handled in a way that is liable to cause scratching

my favorite metal file I've added to my collection.
and nah I built the cockpit parts first and painted them as one piece(still need to paint the chairs and pilots) then I built and seam welded the aircraft around it. I think that's the correct way of doing it but as someone who's only real experience is gundam models it was nerve wrecking having to bring cement, sandpaper and super glue near my paintjob.

Lolipyon right before clear coating. All the paints were mixed with pearl powders, but phone camera just can't manage to pick it up, but the wet look clear I used seems to be making it pop as hoped.

Finally finished this guy after 2 months of nothing. I really, really hate airbrushing but I think the truth is I just hate acrylics. Cleaning out the airbrush, mixing pots and tools takes so long. And I feel like it's hard to find a good consistency on them while spraying.
I'm proud though because I tried a lot of new stuff on him. Panel scribing, putty, weathering, and hairspray chipping.

Looks great dude. It takes me months to make a single HG and I have lots of burnout when I finally push through. Feel guilty but it does make the hobby more manageable since it doesn't distract me outside of vacations. Some people can work a little everyday, some work with the energy of burning jet fuel.

The holding hand on my HGUC GP-02 broke, leaving him unable to hold the giant shield.

Since there's pretty much no chance of fixing it, short of gluing the shield permanently to the hand, which HGBC or Build Parts hand set should I get for a replacement?

I'll have to take some macro pics later and see if they look better. The pearl powders make a phone camera photo mostly just look like noise/finish imperfections instead of metallic fleck.

Overall its a pretty dissapointing kit even for an SD too. The hands and arms dont articulate at all so the claws get in the way of the shield and sword and cannot really be posed for shit. The ears also get in the way of the wing positioning. It does have the option to transform into flight mode though which I may try out when I get around to using my better camera

Looking at my shelf Machinedramon's box is about the size of the WZEW Ver Ka's and a bit smaller than Liger Zero Jager's.
I shipped it solo and they sent it in a medium-small box where it fit pretty well. I think if you get it with a 1/7 then they'll probably

Aside from what you listed, all there really is left to do would be scribing/ plaplate n seamweld, which a lot dont do anyway. Waterslides are a must though IMO, just brings a lot of character to a kit. if they're cleaning nubs and panel lining they are at least doing better than reddit. i once checked out the reddit gunpla sub on a whim and in half of the posts there they didn't even bother fully cutting the nubs off, never mind sanding them down and panel lining.
doing bare plastic builds with panel lines is one thing, but seeing them not even bother cutting the nubs off almost made me sad that the kits went to waste

Compared to the regular Eclipse, the front part is shorter, and so is the needle.

Basically you get a side cup version with an adjustable tailpiece, a Custom Micron trigger and a crown cup (about $80 in free premium parts).

Performance-wise it is identical to the regular Eclipse because the nozzle/needle are the same.

Handling-wise I found it more comfortable to use than the regular Eclipse because of the hand being closer to the part and the unobstructed view over the top. Cleaning takes slightly longer because of the side cup taking extra time to clean.

When I was a kid I had Marvel’s old Transformers comics and I used black sharpies and some Testors model car paint I stole from my older uncle to draw those little extra detail lines on my G1 Transformers toys. My point is, use the power of imagination. Why scribe more panel lines? To look more accurate to the mech’s line art? To have more fiddly detail for detail’s sake? Cause you just like the look? Look at lime art of that design, manga and anime with it, the box art. Copy those. Or copy detailing you see on other highly engineered tech like space shuttles or nuclear plants. Don’t just stare at the blank canvas of the mecha and hope ideas pop into your head.

I can attest for the Moderoid Patlabor AV-98 Ingram. It's a solid kit. Platic quality is on par wth Koto kits, no polycaps, very limited need for glue, & the leg/holster gimmick is very cool. If you are a Bandai-only babby you might have some struggles with it.

Overall the only things you need to keep in mind are these:
1) Pay close attention to instructions which tend to me much more detailed than Bandai ones
2) pegs can be a bit tight, never force them in or to move. Sand if needed
3) Most of the places the instructions say to glue don't NEED it, just makes them stay better if they weren't tight already.
4) The opening leg holster part is the most complicated part of the build. It will need glue since the articulate part that allows it to swing out is only held in place by the pressure of the inner leg and leg plate parts being held together. Pic related.

Finally done with FA Lei-Dao. Working two jobs really puts a damper on my hobbies. But anyway I ended up painting a LOT of the red on this kit, the tips of the fingers, the stripe on the center chest piece, the eye cameras, the red tips on the feet/legs. Fun to do though.

if you ignore proportions, mold detail and sharpness and you only care about articulation then yeah it's a "well-designed" kit, you could've mentioned the ver.ka instead which has much better proportions and mold quality and that's not even mentioning the HG.
I'd argue that there are tons of traditional models that are way higher quality than the RG sazabi but that's after my definition, after my definition the HG shits on the RG sazabi so there's that.

Yeah handpainted. I used AK brick red mixed with some Vallejo red and white until I got the color right. Thinned with distilled water and a bit of Liquitex flow aid. Topcoat is The Army Painter, which works far better on large surfaces than smaller ones, but I can't fully recommend it since Mr Super Clear is just 100% better and easier to deal with.

Right on, im in the middle of handpainting a good portion of the MG Wing ver ka with some Vallejo. I know it has its downsides compared to a airbrush but I really enjoy the process. And yea Mr Super clear is great stuff, really glad Hobby Lobby started carrying it. Infact they seem to be slowly adding more Japanese branded stuff in the model section - here's hoping they add more kits aside from the 5 they currently already have. They fly off the shelfs at my store.

Oh most definitely. Most of the white is gonna be rattlecan, aside from a few color swapped parts. Only MG kit i fully handpainted was the Deathschythe, minus the wings and yea, that took some effort.

Yeah. It will only show up under UV, but it's kind of a shame to use fluorescent paints and not be able to take a couple of shots of the kit under UV light.

I don't know which kit you have, but generally speaking primer is not your friend with high-detail kits. The 1/72 Type 0 I did this January had specific recommendation not to use primer at all to bring out the best in the sculpt.

I probably wouldn't prime that one myself, but 1/48 shouldn't have too many sub-0.1mm panel lines, so a couple of thin primer coats should still be okay.

If you wash it well and use lacquer paint, you'll be fine. MrColor sticks to bare plastic just as well as any primer.

In that case here's one more advice from the same book that told me not to prime: thin your paint a lot more that you usually do.

All the paint for pic related was thinned 3:1 and it took 6 or 7 extra-thin coats for full coverage, but not a micron of unnecessary paint.

Also dust getting caught in a wet coat was never a problem because the coat was always too thin for that.
