More or less what I am referring to is making sure your paint doesn't destroy the layers below it. You don't want to prime with acrylic and then have the solvents in the Laquers eat the primer coat as you spray.

not him but in these images they usually don't and mean waterbased acrylics.
if you replace x axis with "primer" and y with "paint" it should ring somewhat true though and that's what I assume he meant by posting it.

You can. The topcoat *will* melt the acrylic coat somewhat, but no more than it would melt the lacquer coat so who cares. Just don't spray a retarded amount of it all at once and you'll be fine.

It's a surfacer that is basically paint + filler to fill surface imperfections.
If you ask me a surfacer that doesn't bond to the surface really well is fucking pointless. But as long as there is a demand for water-based everything there will be a supply.

Would Mr. Mark Setter ensure they stick down for good (more or less), even with non plamo style stickers?

no setter solution is for waterslide decals, not stickers. the adhesive power is very minuscule.

Answered already but nah the setter wont help with stickers at all. Try a elmers glue stick if you are that worried. Just apply a little near the edges and it should help.

No, if anything, it would make them not stick at all while it's liquid.

If you're worried about the stickers peeling over time, make sure they are applied as exactly as possible and no part of the sticker is hanging over the edge anywhere.
You can also seal the stickers with a gloss coat (see pic related) if you know how to spray. If you don't, this would NOT be a good occassion to learn.

I don't think this is entirely fair. Primer generally serves two purposes: (1) it bonds to plastic better than regular paint, and regular paint bonds to it better than plastic; and (2) it provides a uniform, opaque base coat. (Obviously you know this.) But just because acrylic primers aren't as effective as lacquer primers doesn't make them not primers--relative adhesion and relative uniformity/opacity are what matter. Acrylic primer may not be as good as lacquer primer, but if it's better at the above criteria than regular acrylic paint, then you should use it.

That said, the quality of paints is so good that the uniform base coloring is the most important thing. Your lacquer paints are going to bite the plastic about just as well as your lacquer primers are. Same goes for your acrylic paints compared to acrylic primers.

So I used to build these way back when G Gundam was big on Toonami. Looking back maybe they were HG? Probably RG but I got them at WalMart and got really into them. They got lost to the clutter of being a kid that didn't value shit. Then about a decade ago I got an HG Talgeese-III and never really put it together and kind of lost it. Last year I bought an MG God Gundam and every time I started to put it together I got overwhelmed by all the stuff there was too it. I was looking up something Gundam related and saw Target had an EG RX-78 for like $10. Whilst there there was also an HG Wing Gundam Zero marked down to like $12. I figured "Fuck it. Baby steps. Work my way up"

I also had no intent on starting this one today as well but like... This is really fun? I think I have a hobby now? It's kind of frustrating but also cathartic and deeply satisfying? Is it okay not to paint them? I mean that part seems overwhelming. Maybe further down the line.

The last time I built before getting back into the hobby was when Gundam Wing was on. Then 2 years ago I bought the 2013 HG Wing Gundam on a whim while visiting Japan, mostly due to nostalgia. I built it in the hotel at night. Then I flew out of Japan with 3 RG kits. Now I have a huge backlog and a tub of paints and a collapsable spray booth that I set up when my gf is watching tv.

I think having built a few as a kid makes it much easier to appreciate the huge leaps in quality and engineering, especially when snap building.

Those aren't mine. That's just a comparison of the 90s kit and the 2013 version. This one compares the old Wing Zero to the 2014 version you've got.

I built for a year before I got into painting. But a lot of kits already look great out of box. I just paint because I think that process adds something that I enjoy to the experience. Like the other anon said, you should do what makes you happy.

I built the old Non-Grade Leo as well as a few old model carts/tanks when I was young but didn't get into models since I went for Miniature Wargaming as a teen (I fell into the 40K hole followed by Warmachine/Hordes). Once all my friends who played those moved away I quit. Having rediscovered model building this year starting with the 86 Juggernauts has been amazing. Now it's 6ish months later & I've got 1 MG, 1 RG, 1 HGM, 1 FAG, a couple 30MM/MS + assorted option parts, 3 Moderoids, a couple Flame Toys Transformers, & about 30 HGs split between Gundam/Kyoukai Senki/Eighty Six.

The markers can do the same if they seep into seam lines. Top coating isnt necessary with bare plastic, you do need to top coat then panel line over paint jobs though.

not really, I'm gonna assume you mean it to get the surfaces very smooth but pin-washing rough surfaces is very nice depending on what you're doing, and nothing is stopping you from getting a smooth surface on your paintjob from the start.

No. If it has enough time to soak into the plastic it can make it brittle and cause it to easily stress and crack. Were you the char zgock poster a while back? That was because it seaped into the seam line in the leg and got drawn into the inner part and took forever to dry and got to the plastic. One reason I try to panel line parts on the runners.

The thinner can effect the paint job if your not careful. Helps to panel line after a gloss coat since the liners clean up easy with zippo fluid. If you try to rub the excess to clean it off you will take off the paint job with it. Matte will be a little difficult to clean up. Gloss is good for waterslides as well, where matte will allow the decals to get air underneath.

If you like the proportions, it's good.
G40 and Origin versions of the RX-78-2 have better engineering but it really comes down to individual taste of how it looks. (Beyond global has good engineering too, but looks like a turd so don't bother).

Eh, I actually wouldn't recommend the entry grade to anyone as a first kit other than a child. The Revive at least shows you some cool assembly as well as comes with a decent amount of accessories. EG looks sharp, is a good base for customs and is a good toy for children, but really is a bit dumbed down in terms of a building and learning experience.

Na you can do it anon, panel-lining is super easy. Just look into a panel liner marker since your just beginning, all you gotta do it use it like a pencil and fill in the well, panel lines. Use some rubbing alcohol on a q-tip after to clean up any mess. Ez-pz. Your buys for today are cool, havnt built heavy arms yet. Target, right? Grab the nippers they sell, there actually pretty good.

Yes. Use lighter fluid on a cotton swab to clean. You could also use enamel thinner, but it's a bit stronger than you need. The gloss coat is also acrylic. The thinner won't damage either coat because enamel thinner isn't as reactive with acrylic. The gloss coat is extra protection, but primarily helps the liner flow--your acrylic paint likely isn't smooth enough without the gloss coat and will make the liner blotchy and hard to clean.

Guncannon and Char's Zaku II have Revives as well. I've heard all of the Gundam The Origin kits are of similar caliber. I also personally enjoyed the new Ground Type GM.
The Char Zaku is probably the only one you'll find for a similar price though.

I got into 30MM recently, and while they're pretty nice looking and satisfyingly cheap, they all feel loose and kinda floppy. Is this just how they are? They can stand up, they're not THAT loose, but they don't feel good to handle. It's like there's very little friction in certain joints, like the ab crunch or hips.

you can use tissue paper or printer paper and wedge it into the joints to stiffen it up a little
tissue paper for a little stiffness, printer paper for a lot of stiffness
take the joints apart, place your preferred paper thickness between the two halves of the joint, and just press them together through the paper, then carefully tear the paper to hide the paper as completely as possible while leaving as much inside the joint as possible.

Cross Silhouette is fantastic. But sadly I feel like the line is going to be canceled soon, Bandai hasn't announced anything in a while.

Entire Legend BB series pretty much bangs, just a great line with generally good color separation and chromed parts and removable armor.

BB Senshi from about 2007-2015 was great.

BB Sangokuden had some pretty good kits in the 2010s, but they required painting because their designs are very intricate and look like crap with the included stickers.

Avoid EX Standard like the plague. Shit color separation, shit engineering, tons of hollow parts.

How to become unscared of water slide decals. I really wanna work on this MG God Gundam but I'm daunted by it. It just seems like so much. Especially with screw stuff et all. It just seems all so much. It'd be my first MG kit.

Just wanted to add do not get crazy with panel liner (painted or not)
I got lazy and wasnt just applying it in cracks and started using it more like a wash and letting it dry completely before i cleaned it up. Pieces started cracking and disintegrating.
Ive since found that panel liner is pretty much paint and lighter fluid

you can slide them around for a long time until you get them where you want
you can slowly and gently work out any wrinkle.
if you tear a decal you can line the 2 halves up seamlessly and it looks perfect

If they have visible trim around them (ie you can just peel them right off) then they're not waterslides. Bandai almost never includes waterslides in kits outside of the rare occasion like recent MG Ver.Kas or some P-Bandai kits.

waterslide decals have a thin sheet of tissue paper on top to protect them and will look almost hazy because of the tissue paper

Ill just say its not like those 3d puzzles, some parts once you click into place you need to spin or slide along groves before slotting into place and there is a certain order to the parts as they lock other parts into place as you build.

Once fully assembled though its fairly solid and stable.
