The difference between then and now is that in the 90s Lego was just another toy brand that was shitting out different themes and ideas to see what would stick with audiences, whereas now it's the largest toy brands in the world and can afford to shit things like Nexo Knights, Hidden Side and VIDIYO out because it has hugely successful themes like City, Friends, Ninjago, and Star Wars to fall back on. Nexo Knights and Hidden Side also have the benefit of being actual Lego sets whereas shit like Scala and Znap were just trying to be Barbie and K'Nex respectively. Like seriously, how do you look at this shit and think it has anything to do with Lego?

You have to remember the early 00s were a weird time for Lego in general too. You had Town's dark age with Town Jr. and World City back to back. You had Lego pumping millions of dollars into Galidor both in the form of the widely unpopular TV show and the sets themselves. You had the absolute mess that was Jack Stone/4 Juniors around. You had weird-ass shit like Clikits, the Hockey sets, and Spybotics roaming around. Lego didn't suddenly become an overnight success financially because they started making Star Wars sets, they were still losing money regularly up until around 2003. I'd say it wasn't until around 2005/6 where Lego really started to make bank

>Revenge of the Sith sets released alongside the movie, featuring fleshies for the first time
>The first two Lego Star Wars games released to critical acclaim, leading to a future of more games in a similar format
>Arguably the most kino years for Bionicle at that point (Hordika/Inika) other than the first two

Lego's modern success is one part licenseshit/nostalgiafagging and one part due to all of the restructuring they did in the late 90s/early 00s.

also unrelated to the request, i wish lego stuck with the delicate blacksmith's daughter archetype rather than the exhausting katniss everdeen/arya stark trope. at least they got rid of the obnoxious detail, the original walls looked ugly as sin and i would have loathed building them

As someone who wasn't really following Lego around the time, what is it that made World City part of a dark age? Looking over the sets, it's only the promotional airplane gimmick that jumps out at me as "yeah, this is weird;" the rest of it isn't setting off any alarm bells, but maybe I'm not looking deep enough.

World City boils down into three main categories
>Police
A good chunk of the World City sets were police themed.
>Boats
Fire Boats, Coast Guard, and even a hovercraft.
>Trains
Honestly probably the best overall category of World City sets since it was the last decently affordable Train theme (The passenger set was under $100 for example and still came with a motor and track)

The problem is that most of the World City sets have this weird-ass aesthetic that doesn't mesh well with Town/City sets released before or after it. I feel that these sets are the worst offenders since they look so goddamn weird compared to how normal City/Town sets look. Just compare 7035 to the police station released immediately after it (7237) and it's like night and day.

Another problem is look at those three categories I posted. It's just rescue vehicles and train stuff. No construction vehicles, no hospital stuff, no airport stuff (outside of promo sets, no commercial stuff like banks or stores, no residential stuff, not even any Fire Department stuff outside of two fire boats. It's a pretty damn barren theme in general compared to what came before and after it.

I would take mine apart and build other shit, and then throw all the pieces into a gigantic tub that all my other lego pieces were in. The instructions would often be tossed in as well and get all mangled and torn.

I'll grant that with the two-three finger hinges, but in all these years I've only had a couple of the bigger five-finger hinges break, and even then it was losing a single finger and they were still usable. While they have their own advantages, the ratcheted hinge replacement system fixes the range of angles they can bend to, making them less than ideal for canopies. I appreciate them for other things (the arms of the carrier notably) but for hinged panels I much prefer the older system - annoys me that I've had to mix the two on some ships and modules but it was not cost-effective to track down enough of the older one in plain yellow.

They spent a good amount of time being potty trained by their parents, and then once they achieve this, they are told to never talk about it in public.

Giving them toys related to such gives them an outlet to joke about it or enact play (such as, they just conquered the toilet, now they can play the parental role and help their lego monkey solve an "issue").

There's some pretty good child psychology papers about it recently, I don't think you should look into the evils of it that much. If you think a well timed fart is funny, a poop toy isn't far off from that.

Here, I think Lego never had a clear idea on what kind of windscreens to use after ditching the old fingered ones. The one made made for Star Wars rebel ships seemed straightforward but hardly has been used outside that theme after the 00s, and the replacements in pic related are quite recent.

That looks like a series 1, 2 or 3 which is from over a decade ago, they are expensive because they are kind of rare now. Lego wasn't as popular as it is now back then and it was in the era right when Lego was rebounding from being almost bankrupt.

Actually, seeing that makes me realize I have a ton of series 1-3 minifigures that I should capitalize on and sell.

My first and only train set as a kid was 4511 and I loved it. After I rediscovered my passion for plastic crack I started collecting the older train sets and pic rel is my pride and joy. Its all thanks to me moving to Denmark to study, otherwise I would have never found these. The prices now are crazy, most of these sets I bought for around 100-200 euro and they are mostly complete some even came with boxes. I fucking love the 9v era.

I think that it looks more like a jumble of ship parts (which it is obv) than it does a proper pirate base, which was the original intent as a set

What about the 4x4 round tiles? You might have to make a sidewalk that doesn't follow the same curve as the road, with a little shoulder area between the road and the sidewalk, if you want it to be smooth.

I was at khols using my khols cash to get some minifigure series 22 and as I was feeling around the packs a bunch of employees started walking around me and staring at me from far away and talking on the radio. I got nervous and left with what I thought was gonna be the snow guardian and a few others but as I was checking out I knew that it was gonna be the horse and groom and it was. I'll need to try again! im brown so I didn't want them thinking I was opening the packs or trying to steal. the box was on a shelf so I just had my hands hidden
