It's a shame he ended up as much of a shelfwarmer as he did, I've always found him cool looking and pretty fun with the triple changing gimmick. Wish my childhood one had survived, but getting him in hand again is nice.

That said, opening up a sealed vintage figure and seeing how tight the joints were was worrying to say the least.

i have no idea why I like him so much. the wing pincers and third mode are awkward, the hollow shins and weird open hands and push-missile are not my favorite choices, yet..put it all together in this well-proportioned package, with that neato keen spring-loaded automorph chest, and... yeah he's just great.

Sometimes that sort of thing happens. G1 Seaspray has his toy's screws and wheel/axle on his character model's back, even if "realistically" he shouldn't.

I actually like them sometimes. it's easy to imagine them being special guns. or just neat greebles.

Not really. The older figures hit a fine line, where the toys had decent enough representation for both modes without being too expensive. The newer figures try way too hard to be accurate to the point the toys end up with serious QC issues.

If you mean G1, MP-10 is considered pretty good, dated now but still a solid MP. For regular figures, Earthrise and Siege Prime are good options.

Soundwave's MP is pretty good, but it came out a while ago. For retail, pick either the Siege or Netflix Soundwave (be warned, some Netflix Soundwave's have suffered from a recent phenomena where some of the plastic yellows ridiculously fast in less than a year, and the figure is expensive in the aftermarket so I'm not sure if I'd risk getting it). We're also getting a new Soundwave in the current line (Legacy) but we're not if it's even G1 Soundave.

It depends on a figure by figure basis, as well as how much you can find them for on the aftermarket. Some are real good and solid figures. Some are panel-forming messes with breakage issues. And then some are just kind of embarrassing.

Transformers Generations Fall of Cybertron Vortex

The second best vehicle of the bunch.
Vortex isn't normally red, is he? This bright red is just to zazz up the group.
I think he pulls it off, the red and purple play together well enough.
Not sure what good adding swords to a helicopter is, but it looks cool. The yellow really pops.

I know no one here is going to get the reference but Vortex sort of reminds me of a cross between the helicopter monsters and mosquito monsters in Jade Cocoon 2. The overly bulbous frontend is what does it.
Why would a cybertronian vehicle even need a cockpit?

Transformation is pretty satisfying. The kind that demands you get involved.

Vortex is rocking an aesthetic I can't quite pin down but I do know the crotch plate is carrying at least 80% of it. The other 20% belong to the eye spots on the chest and the stripe on his mouth guard.

Poor guy really needed another hinge to get his rotor blade to the outside of his arm.
As is they're pretty useless. Bending his elbow even one notch disables them completely. And leving his arm straight lets them smack Vortex in his own face from almost every angle.

Articulation Is standard and functional. You just have to del with the blight that is the rotor blades.

Vortex has got your normal ball joint shoulders and hips, so that's all fine.
The swivel on the head is not fine. Vortex's stupid seeker collar prevents his head from turning more than like 10 degrees. He can look up 90 degrees, not many toys do that.

Teeny tiny teeny elbows bend almost 90 on soft ratchets. Knees bend 90 degrees too, but the transformation hinge will bend way before the actual knee joint.
Biceps, thighs, and waist all swivel well.

energyliger is just awesome.. i wanna say there was a version with green clear parts, but I had th eone with orange parts and a black chassis.. have. i still have it. god i hope it's okay.
but yeah zoids tend to be boxy as hell because the limbs have to clear the body, unlike real animals where the softness of flesh helps smooth over that issue... it looks like alpha tr-lion might not actually have lion shoulder articulation, so maybe that's why.

Yeah, the whole yellowing issue these past few years has been annoying. I've actually been keeping the boxes for most of my purchases in the past year so I can at least get my money back when I report that to Hasbro, I already lost money on a Spoiler pack Nemesis Prime and Cyclonus.

My very first few jobs when I hit 18 was actually warehousing/production, so I'd know. Done everything from packaging alcohol to Christmas deco to automobile supplies to food. Transformers Generations Fall of Cybertron Onslaught

Deluxe Class. Onslaught.
The big stinker of the bunch.

Onslaught turns into a crumpled up mess on four wheels. The thing that's supposed to look like double cannons does a job of covering it up. But not a good job of making him look like Onslaught.
No part of this does a good job of making him look like Onslaught.

I take that back. He's a very Onslaughty shade of blue. The green is okay too.
He does a passable job of rolling, the minimum you can ask of a toy, so long as one of this thighs doesn't twist. The rear quarters of the... thing don't peg into anything so they can get misaligned easily.

Look at this guy. At a glance he almost seems... correct.
Actually I thought I would hate him more than I do, but he's at least better than Brawl.
Onslaught can at least stand.

The colour layout continues to be good. Onslaught is rocking the painted on green undies. Cool how the whole team has yellow eyes. Except Swindle. But Swindle was always the odd man out of the Combaticons.

Yo can see the teeth in his elbow so you know Onslaught is rocking that soft ratchet there, As well as a ball joint cut for that sideways elbow action.
Swivels at the neck and waist, but Bruticus' crotch plate hinders that a lot.
Shoulder rotate but the axis is way too low to look good.

Super duper insanely strong ratchets in the hips, my god.
And his knees can do a bend.
The green almost cannon looking thing does not fit on his back in this mode.

You made me check my Cyberverse guys. Grimlock has yellowed a little bit, and Arcee is pretty bad, but not as bad as yours. I didn’t even notice until I shone a white led on her, the lighting in here is slightly yellow, so she looked normal at a casual glance. Yeah, that Bulkhead and Arcee are great figures. So is Earthrise Prime 1.5. I also enjoy how all the core figures include parts of a combiner weapons instead of including their actual weapons. The packing also leaps and bounds compared to the WFC packing, specially the Siege and Earthrise packing.

Kickback's better, but I don't consider it a major improvement over the Legends, while Blitzwing's only solid mode is the robot and even then he has all these tiny problems that you might as well wait for the next attempt. I agree on Dragstrip and anyone who wants to get a Menasor will probably end up with a great combiner, but nothing else has been all that so far. With the way certain figures have been stylized, I'm not looking forward to figures like Jhiaxus and Dragon Megatron anymore.

Nah, the limbs are too thin, his concept art was better. Shame they decided to make Bulkhead and Beast Hunters Prime share parts. Had he been his own mold it might have turned out better.

Really? The only thing I don't like in bot mode are those forearm covers and maybe the shade of purple could be a bit lighter. Other than that I'd argue it's the best bot mode Blitzwing period. Even MP-scale Gewalt has more annoying little things that don't quite match and you'd expect to be nailed at that scale and level of complexity.

In many ways it's better than the last attempts, but the tank and plane look so bad that it drags it down, not to mention the higher price tag and those awful fists (at least Shockwave had accesories that worked with other toys, while Astrotrain had tons of guns).

Yeah, that's what most collectors would do. I kept my old Universe Cyclonus to be the "armada" for the new Kingdom Cyclonus, and boy did I regret that after Kingdom Cyclonus yellowed.

At absolutely no point has there been a designer driven toyline in Transformers. The closest thing was the MP Starscream 1.0.

Compare to Gundam's Ver.KAs or when they got Syd Mead as a guest designer.

In my experience, the assembled kit is fairly solid, with decently designed jointing and parts layering. The only flimsy-feeling bits I've found are the cheek bits (they're attached by small tabs, understandably) and the abdomen pieces right underneath the chest. The one in the back under her wingpack in particular, as it can be a struggle to get it reconnected. The earring bits didn't feel very fragile either, I was simply unlucky.

Articulation is solid, though the ball joints in the head and abdomen can be worryingly tight at times—I would recommend anyone to sand down the ball joints a little bit before assembly, as it can be very difficult to separate them afterwards. I'm surprised there aren't more ball joints in the kit, and even more surprised it's not a polycap-filled kit like other Flame Toys kits (only limited to the biceps and backpack for Windblade here). Posing does feel pretty good, but I have to wonder how the plastic-on-plastic jointing will hold up (having flashbacks to my old MG Sinanju ver Ka).

The wings do tend to feel flimsy at times in their construction (not the moving joints, mind), but that tends to be a constant in snap-fit models w/ wings. The black fan housings in particular could definitely benefit from some glue, once fully detailed.

Not the other guy, but while the thorax is nice, I hate the bug head on the Legacy and the way the wings are attached. I know it's G1 accurate but I don't like it. I might get the other two Insecticons whenever they get to them (I never liked the last Bombshell that much) but I'll pass on Kickback.

I hate it less than I thought I would. Maybe knowing and contextualizing the circumstances of this thing's design process softens my opinion. Let's be real, it's not good, but it isn't the worst thing HasTak has shat out.

I'd say Bruticus is about equal to the sum of his parts. Certainly better than Brawl and Onslaught were individually.
Much more stable than you'd think as well. He's got no trouble standing and can take a little jostling, which is more than some combiners can say.

His head is pretty Bruticusy and that dumb hunk of plastic Onslaught lugs around finally almost looks like something now that it fits on his back. Not having any extra hand and foot parts is a talking point as well, I guess.

Perhaps a bit ambitious for this endeavor.

Bruticus is a bit less stable this way. The swindle foot was putting in a lot of good work before.
The Brawl arm almost looks good. It's cool that it's so different from the foot. But he still doesn't look good.

Fuck it don't look good. Mostly Grimlock's fault tho. That Dino mode is just not a match for Bruticus.

Bruticus' articulation is so strange.
Head, thigh and waist swivels. Check.
Shoulders and knees at the combiner joints. Check.

Curling iron hand on Blast Off. His extremely long forearm only bends inwards.
Vortex's thumb, at the end of his extremely short forearm, can rotate from gun holding position to karate chop action.
The very tight hips Onslaught had that can definitely support a gestalt are locked from moving forward since the crotch place pegs into place.

I got the game-accurate colored one. It is still not great, but not terrible. I prefer having Blast Off being a flamethrower like in the game rather than the awkward hand with an unwieldy combined weapon.

Hasbro's fucked up the plastic mix for some figure batches, some are more prone to it than others. Figures like Cyclonus had two versions with issues. There's also a chance the one you got doesn't suffer from it. The environment doesn't cause yellowing that bad so quickly, shit I don't think leaving them in the sun causes this much damage in such a short amount of time.
