I built a little wizard hideout/ potion and alchemy store (obviously inspired by the classic Majistos Magic Shop set). I’m pretty happy with how it came out although the leaves are very fragile and fall off easily

Depends on how big of a batch they made of them. They made a ton of the May 4th Homestead sets and they're $40 on the aftermarket right now. Not crazy to think this will be $60 right after the promo ends.

Agreed. My favorite was the Forestman's Crossing. As a kid I used to play out little stories where the forestmen would ambush rich nobles traveling down the river by canoe. They'd take their stuff and put it in the secret alcove, and then try to ransom the noble back to their family. Then they'd have to mount a defense as the nobleman's family ordered mercenaries to attack them.

AFOLs shit on those but when you were a kid and your family couldn't afford a ton of LEGO, those huge pieces made it possible to build out cool castles and structures without using a ton of pieces. Yeah some sets overused them but just having one or two to build on top of & around helped a lot

for that price i was hoping for something like a modular, obviously it couldt have all the rooms and areas of a castle made modular but maybe a fairly decent keep and then wall segments, you get a nice contained building and walls, from there you can add more bits as you please

I just don't like that it has a hole in the way for a waterwheel. Creator castle had similar issue with having a waterwheel and low wooden structure on the outer wall.
Castles are defensive structures, you shouldn't have stuff like this that compromises the defense.
Of course I'll mostly be buying it for the parts and to use as a base for my own castle

I was at target recently and a couple kids maybe like 15 or 16 came into the lego area while I was there and one of them mentioned that they wished they'd bring back nexo knights and how it was his favorite. one of them ended up walking away with a some minecraft set and the other was interested in the marvel stuff. thats the way she goes toobs, I'm sure there is some kid out there who really loved their angry birds movie set or something and in a few years they'll get a job and get back into lego and pay $250 for a NIB copy of this fuckin pig castle or some shit.

I really like how these sets encourage you to use the pod pieces in them. I might try to collect a full set of the entire subtheme.

I didn't think to compare them to mixels but that's a good modern equivalent, I collected some of them too and thought they were great. I don't think I could ever be the type of person to go out of my way to buy specific parts to make large and intricate builds, these strike a great balance. I think the limited palettes do a lot of leg work in making any build look very tied together.

That's exactly my feeling as well. I always thought the charm was in using what pieces you were given. Some of the old X-Pod combiners really spoke to that, from what I recall.
I really would love to get my hands on some of them again. Only had the Aero and Robo pods, but the later Robo pod, Dino pod, and Monster pod really stick out to me.

This isn't the first time trainfags have gotten cucked by only getting one coach in a passenger set. The only difference here is that the Emerald Night was $100 when it came out, so unless this thing is 8-wide in order to fit all the figs inside or comes with the electronics I can't see it being $500 for a steam engine and a single coach.

Update on pricing
The current global economic challenges of increased raw material and operating costs are impacting many businesses.

I miss collecting lego. The prices just aren't worth it anymore. I've actually gotten into building gundam kits to satisfy my need to build things because its actually cheaper than lego now.

Why does lego have to suckle the license dick? I'm sure theres a bunch of legal stuff in the way that makes it impossible, but I wish they would just drop everything and go back to original themes only for a change. Creating injection molds costs actual millions, especially the larger an item it becomes, the more costly a mold will be. They only last so many injections before the tolerance limit requires replacement (this is why knockoff brands can fit poorly - tolerance issues, smuggling dud molds that are past life expectancy).

This trend has made lego bits become smaller and smaller in sets - tiny parts are simply cheaper to mass produce. Smaller molds are cheaper. Plop a desirable minifig in a set and suddenly you can get away with any price even if its filled with itty bitty bits of trash.

Sadly, all my favorite stuff has been big items like raised baseplates, massive transparent space panels, or burps, so I've become distanced to new stuff over time. The new "road plates" are utter garbo.

I think the line between collector, consumer, connoisseur, is all blurry. I haven't bought a new in box set for quite a while unless it was on clearance, but goodness, I still spend a lot on lego in the second hand market. Just not a big fan of 1x1 tiles, cheese slopes, and licensed action figures.

The problem with LEGO isn't that it's expensive, you are all just freaks who are bad with money. I just watched just2good's (I know you're here, justin) "Top 50 Most Wanted List" for this summer wave and the amount of times where he justifies spending $80 on a set for one minifigure or one part without any hint of irony or self-awareness is insane. And I know he's not unique among you, it's a sickness you all share. I see it on instagram, I see it on Twitter, I see it on Reddit, I see it here. You don't actually LIKE LEGO sets, you just like collecting, you like having, hoarding, buying up individual parts and pieces and collecting prints and minifigs, and for what? Barely any of you ever post any MOCs. The best you might have is a baseplate with your favorite figures lined up around an official set. So yeah, when you look at a $180 AT-TE and go "oh wow, that's expensive, but Commander Cody is really important to me, I'll just buy it" of course you're gonna get fleeced for everything you're worth and of course they're gonna raise prices.

It's also deeply funny to watch you all recognize, oh yeah, corporations aren't about just making a profit, but never, ever taking a loss. Endless, endless growth. You dipshits love capitalism until you realize you don't have capital, you just get fleeced by the ones who do. If you dipshit nerds could all get together and realize all at once that yeah, every single company does this to you and hides it in the same language, raises prices and lowers quality, you'd maybe have a chance at doing something, a boycott that actually manages to do anything at all. Instead you're going to sit there, stew in it, maybe shitpost a few times, and then buy. Consume. That is your fate.

btw when does the new castle come out? i really want it. i love knights!

To be fair, not a lot of people post mocs because you can't crosspost anywhere else without getting doxxed and harassed by autists who will run a reverse image search and seek you out as a /toy/-poster. That's just the nature of 4chan as a whole.

/lg/ is just a place for funposting about Lego, it's unable to sustain any actual feeling of community due to it's anonymity and lack of rules for posting. A person is better off on eurobricks if they want to share anything of higher substance.

Also, for me, Lego is a self sustaining hobby. I typically buy big lots and individually sell parts I don't need to pay for the rest. And my Lego collection makes way more on appreciation than my savings account and investments as of late, so I don't blame people for jumping in on the whole collecting craze as well, since it's something you can actively enjoy that maintains value in a time where most things aren't doing that.

Great post. Yeah the way that these youtubers never or rarely self-reflect is amazing to me too. Like bricktsar is clearly fucking insane with the amount of Lego he buys, and his stupid tipper truck army, but he never bothers to say "maybe there is something wrong with me." Does anyone know of any books written or studies done on the psychology of collecting? It seems like very few collectors actually display what they have. It's always like 3 bookcases with some of their favorites and then hundreds of plastic bins holding everything else.

Bricktsar's collection is literally amazing with all of the vintage and classic items he owns, but most will probably never even be seen again.

The Town Center has kendo minifgs in it that I want - but it's $100 for something that looks like it's $30 plus a twenty in new road shit. I'm not buying that crap. Same story for a lot of the City sets.
The only sets that look like they're worth their price tag recently are 3in1 sets.
Also the afol moc community has a long history of buying multitudes of sets for a single piece to use in their huge display. The current crop of youtubers are just being brand whores, especially the losers that make a set to instructions and don't attempt anything different.

3. Lego dust collectors are better than real plastic models with 100% realistic accuracy because they require imagination and can always be built down and modified. Plastic models need to be cut and reglued to modify

Here's the gate itself and an off world base for it.
Also my SG-1 minifigs (haven't found a good head for Carter yet) and some smaller accessories (Jaffa staff canon, DHD and the mk1 and mk2 MALPs).

The base is still a WIP as I'm waiting on a couple of last BL orders to finish it.

I got back into lego exactly at the tail end of those Castle sets. Managed to only grab two small ones. It sucks because those were really good for tons of different parts like chests, wagon wheels, and horses, armors, that most other sets didnt have.

Same with Lone Ranger. Yeah, it was cape shit but injians, actual teepee made of a plastic printed sheet, canoes, cowboy stuff.

Best sets by far in the NuLego commercial licensed world was probably The Lego Movie where you could finally get "classic" faces, city stuff, and weird themes and all kinds of parts (the Metal beard ship and figure sets had canons, hot dogs, chains, and sharks and other animals? its been a while).

I love Star Wars sets but they're possibly the most bland in terms of pieces. I'm seeing the Harry Potter and Friends sets have much more interesting parts.
