Really don't get this constant hate on 'new' lego. Do you fuckers just want to stack bricks and slopes on elevated baseplates or something? I very much enjoy the new elements and the interesting designs and mechanisms lego does. Clever design and detail contains much more soul than nostalgic simple sets for me.

NuLego just looks so soulless. Sure, there's some great design shit and lots more detail, but the reason vintage 80s and 90s sets had so much soul was that they did so much more with so little... They were beautiful in their simplicity, from their builds to the kind of Logos the minifigures used... It was all so beautifully simplistic and that is something that Lego will never return to.

Even with their upcoming Castle set, it will probably be the last Lego set I ever buy with where the company is headed, but my expectations are guarded. I know that the minifigures will be over-rendered renditions of what the nostalgic ones were. It'll be cool to see them in a new light but that set will not have the same magic as King's Mountain Fortress or Black Knight's Castle.

I can understand valuing simplicity, but not to the extent you do I guess. Good design/sculpting comes above that for me. And mechanical functions. And lego has always tried to do all of these, it's just that recently they've got a lot better at the latter, maybe at the expense of simplicity. It's perfectly fine to value both, I just don't get these nostalgic extremists. The things that got me back to buying sets were things like the small details done with ingenuity in speed champions sets (for example the bugatti backlights done with a rubber band) and some good mechanical channels like jkbrickworks.

It looks fine, I bought one. I was tempted to get three so I could have all three builds built at once, but inflation hit and my income fell so I didn't do that.

Overall I think that 3-in-1 Castle set looks decent but I'm not crazy about building shit like dragons out of bricks when molds for stuff like that is way more appealing to me as a collector. I think the design and use of color is overall pretty good, but I think what made vintage sets so appealing is that they had very distinct color schemes that you don't see as much in Lego anymore because their new designers use so many different colors in every set that it's just kind of a multicolored mess and nothing really pops... Might be my biggest issue with it.

There's something to be said about art and design that uses an intentionally limited color palette. You'll even see professional artists today enforcing those rules on their work and the results of working under such limitations can be pretty amazing, and the visual impact actually ends up being a lot stronger than if you, say, used as many colors as you could.

But that's the state of new Lego; it's an oversaturation of multiple colors and details to the point where nothing really pops or stands out unless you're right up on it.

The brick-built dragon is just a function of it being a 3 in 1 set I assume. I also prefer that since you can take it apart and use the parts for other stuff, but that's just my preference. The problem with LEGO isn't that it's expensive, you are all just freaks who are bad with money. I just watched just2good's (I know you're here, justin) "Top 50 Most Wanted List" for this summer wave and the amount of times where he justifies spending $80 on a set for one minifigure or one part without any hint of irony or self-awareness is insane. And I know he's not unique among you, it's a sickness you all share. I see it on instagram, I see it on Twitter, I see it on Reddit, I see it here. You don't actually LIKE LEGO sets, you just like collecting, you like having, hoarding, buying up individual parts and pieces and collecting prints and minifigs, and for what? Barely any of you ever post any MOCs. The best you might have is a baseplate with your favorite figures lined up around an official set. So yeah, when you look at a $180 AT-TE and go "oh wow, that's expensive, but Commander Cody is really important to me, I'll just buy it" of course you're gonna get fleeced for everything you're worth and of course they're gonna raise prices.

It's also deeply funny to watch you all recognize, oh yeah, corporations aren't about just making a profit, but never, ever taking a loss. Endless, endless growth. You dipshits love capitalism until you realize you don't have capital, you just get fleeced by the ones who do. If you dipshit nerds could all get together and realize all at once that yeah, every single company does this to you and hides it in the same language, raises prices and lowers quality, you'd maybe have a chance at doing something, a boycott that actually manages to do anything at all. Instead you're going to sit there, stew in it, maybe shitpost a few times, and then buy. Consume. That is your fate.

Not only is the set one of the worst we've ever seen, but it offers nothing special.

We have Darth Vader, a figure that's in countless other sets.
We have Obi Wan, it's a new one, but again it's been in many other sets and he's not that great of a figure in this one.
Then the only really unique figure is the yellow one, the only other figure is a very basic imperial officer.

So you have a shitty grey base, 3 forgettable figures and only one that is unique to this set, all for $50. Worst star wars set by far.

Bricklink is a hobbyist site, so sellers are expected to provide good quality sets with all imperfections/missing pieces/deficiencies listed in description. As opposed to ebay, where most merchants aren't Lego collectors and things are largely "as is" from the photos included.

It's certainly not odd to ask for pictures on a more expensive set.

Also, the bricklink price guide and ebay completed listings are the best spots to look in terms of actual values of what sold.

Peak SW for minifigs and general classic feel was the first few years. Beginning through 2004 or so, really everything pre-fleshie. Peak SW for realistic sets was, I don't remember the exact year(s), but somewhere around 2010-2012. There were some really fucking cool sets right around then.

an important think to note is that old lego's branding is retro and cool as hell. it has great design that is artful and gets a kids imagination going. it may not sell as many toys, but I'd argue it sticks with them longer. lego at this time did not suffer having to make their toys compare to others on the shelves, they were free to dig into their own identity as they also happened to hold the lego brick copyright, a flat out good toy

it's also the problem with posting box art or instruction art from the sets when comparing them to now. it captures the time, nostalgia, that imagination that the consumer makes around it while also representing lego's "golden age" of the classic themes in their purest lego form. I agree it has more soul, but post just the figures and set as you'd show a modern one on a plain white backdrop and then begin measuring. I'll always lean toward anything with the lego head no.1, but considering how many of us are adult fans it's embarrassing to have this little perspective. it's like hearing Star Wars fans worship that awful obi wan show.

How justified is FOMO with current Lego sets?

I missed out on this one and regret it because now it costs 3x the original price new.
But I noticed that a lot of the newer sets don't go up in price too much once discontinued.
Any idea why? Are there too many people hoarding sets now hoping to make a profit keeping the supply of old, unopened sets high?

Right now there are some sets I think are neat but they don't give me a "must buy now" impulse. But I worry if I wait too long I will have to overpay later. Especially with them being from the Ideas series so they will always have passionate fans.

The thing is, all the kids that played with Lego from that era are hitting 30 now and buying back their toys, especially since Lego is actively marketing towards adults now and the whole nerd culture / toy collecting has become mainstream. I think things are going to continue to get pricier in the future, but everything is uncertain now with the way the global economy looks.

The important thing is spending your money on something you enjoy and get something out of. Hopefully you're reinvesting that 17k into something good!

the lego scene was very different pre-covid, and I feel for anybody coming into this now or anytime in the near future, because old stuff is getting more and more expensive. If I had to guess my collection is probably worth anywhere from $5-10k more than it was just 2 or 3 years ago. for me lego is actually one of my cheaper hobbies so nothing has really changed for me. but I have been buying a lot more stuff that I know people are going to want in a couple years, I buy a lot of cheap listings of popular nostalgic sets, and a lot of the stuff that I'm assuming is going to become more and more nostalgic (early/mid 2000s - early 2010's stuff is going up like crazy, and will continue too), and fill out missing/damaged pieces then sell some of it, and some of it gets stored away. a lot of people will be priced out of lego for a while, but this is very much a bubble that will eventually pop and level out, just like funko pops, pokemon, and other things that are hot right now, it's just that way it goes 4chinz.

So the hole in the front is to allow the wire for the lights to extend from the cab into the front halves of the loco, then you have the sides of the cab which seem to be attached mostly by that technic pin on the side. The only thing I can think of that's hgot it being pushe forward is the L bracket in front of each motor, but I can't say for certain it's that. Either way it's a pretty solid MOC that matches what it was going for (A 12-V era stylized crocodile) pretty well.

Most regular molds cost around $10k, super complex ones; like molding a new bigfig are more up in that range.

Lego started production in China for that reason. When the first CMF lines were coming out, they had their chinese factory just making specialty minifig molds and almost nothing else.

think of all the new moulds they made for Vidyo, most quite specific, some can get reused as generic aliens (although won't because Lego refuses to make a non licenced space theme (no, city space lines don't count)) or whatever but they can't make a new goat mould that they could use over and over again with different themes

More than likely it's just lazy LP or lack of LP. If you were really stealing as much as you imply they could definitely move on you if they wanted. They absolutely have your plates if you enter the parking lots via car. Walmart and Target at least have dedicated cams at each drive entrance for that. They also have multiple pictures of you doing your stuff I would bet. More than likely you're just not that big of an impact on daily business to truly care. You can just put a documented loss into the computer system and the distribution center will credit you for the merchandise anyway which is why they just don't care that much as long as they actually see you walk out with it. We're more focused on overall inventory reduction and less about petty theft these days since covid fucked the field up.

this. years back when I was dealing weed I knew a guy who would drive to neighboring states to shoplift from walmart and target, he got caught on a few small things at walmart but never anything big and never got caught at target. then I didn't hear from him for a couple weeks, but I ran into his girlfriend at a store who told me they were charging him with like multiple counts of grand theft or some shit like that because they built a case over like 2 years and now she was going to lose their apartment and their car got repo'd and all this shit. I ended up moving and changing my number about a year later so no idea what ever ended up happening to him but I assume he got some jail time.

Yes and no. For me, Lego is relaxing, fun and I really like the old artwork and style of 90s sets. To me, there's something innately comforting about Lego, it has a lot of good childhood memories.

Although, when I'm bored and browsing online, I find myself get into this mode of consooming where I enjoy the "hunt" of finding things and ordering them, when I really don't need them. Lego takes up a huge amount of room and I often don't like how much space it's taking from me to own. So I try to sell things I don't love. Lego is something really easy to hoard because everything has a use, because at the end of the day, it's all usable bricks for anything. But at a certain point, it starts feeling like a chore and nuisance.

Average house where I live in $600k, buying Lego has no effect on my retirement. All my money in savings and stocks this year has lost significant value, meanwhile all my lego sets doubled in value. That also makes it easier to justify spending money on and becoming a hoarder.

Take 4 bowls. 1 will be emptied out where you put pieces.
1 bowl is for bricks and plates and tiles (cylinders too, slopes, any kind of block)
1 bowl is for snot (studs not on top) or stuff like technic, tubes, clips, hinges, wheels.
1 is for "intricate" pieces, so Minifigure accessories, bikes, claws, plants animals, just stuff that's not for building but for details.

You can also get one of those big Lego head sorting bin thingies. They have plastic mesh sizes inside that filter larger pieces on top with tiny pieces on bottom.

You do it in waves. You don't just dump all of it at once. You chip away at the big unsorted pile until it becomes sorted. The point is you have 1 main bowl that has random parts and then you sort the other bowls into their designated container (if you're using one of those big plastic sorting things used for nuts and bolts or fishing shit) and start placing some of the tiles or bricks in their containers. (We reached image limit but those sorting drawers or whatever.

I have em set by part type with some containers sharing similar pieces. But mostly it's like 1x1, 1x2, 1x3, 1x4, 1x6, 1x8+, 2x2, 2x3, 2x4, 2x6, 2x8+(for pieces larger than 2x8 they all go in the same drawer for now). Then do the same with the tiles and plates, etc. When you empty those bowls you chip away again at the big pile. But personally I do the intricate pieces stuff last so I put all that stuff in one giant bowl/box and will do that last because actual building pieces are much easier to sort quickly.

I have found focusing on bricks and plate pieces first is a good way to reduce the amount of LEGO I have to sort. I underestimated how many pieces can come in a goodwill bulk lot.

Unironically the most soulful set Lego has ever released. I'd love for them to kickstart a new Pirate's line based off the story beat that they repaired the Black Seas Barracuda and return to the seas, with the imperial soldiers having taken more power. that could create really cool scenarios for sets. A big imperial fort as the 100-200 dollar set for the first wave to pair with Barracuda Bay too. Man I'd fucking COOM

I don't think that's correct, I still think thats 50/50. My little brother (7) loves Lego Star Wars, and I still buy Lego star wars (because legos OG themes are dead unfortunately) and I enjoy the new shit. A lot of it is playsets though, so there's no way this wasn't designed with that in mind.
