Think I only ever had one or two Technic sets growing up, just never got into that and as a result there's hardly any mechanical functions in my builds. Tbh I'd rather just bolt wings on a submarine, turn it into a seaplane and call it a day.

I only had one Technic set as a kid, it had a large and small pneumatic piston, a pump and a couple of switches and holy shit did I get some mileage out of those.

It wasn't a pretty set but by god did it and all the alt builds have a lot of functionality.

I have this one, de-Info’d so no self doxx, made as a kid but has more play features than most gray boxes such as that red thing on the side being used to lock a pair of inner doors REALLY securely, and is able to be turned to keep it locked, the one section on top can be lifted off and I made it have a treasure chest, there’s a smaller door inside and also the gate, I slightly fixed it up from 6+ years or more ago when I got my castle stuff out but it’s basically the same as when I put it away for a long while, trying to figure out ways to improve my shit and improve my building techniques from a kid or in general here so advice would be appreciated, and the train castle (Bricked up Train I feel would be best for creativity) would likely work best in my opinions, sorry for long post

Don’t know if I believe that desu. It accommodates a minifig just right on every floor, and is still slightly shrunken by historical standards. I don’t understand what perspective this criticism comes from other than thinking it should have the shop separated… but some historical shops in this style could accommodate entire wagons on the bottom floor and still have a living space and loft above.

It is out of scale with any past or contemporary set that one would want to display it alongside. Even the new castle is going to look awkward alongside it.

The moss on the top grew on me but remember lego is a Danish company, and their style is heavily influenced by Viking era of architecture with tall roofs and large beams often stretching to the ground and overlapping at the top into some design. It’s not that bad of a design when you accept it isn’t English and it isn’t the 80s sets they stripped down for cost efficiency

I wouldn't say it's out of scale, the scale is actually pretty spot on, it's just that it's three stories tall and really nicely detailed.

Honestly for me it just means I need to bring all of my other medieval stuff up to the same standard.

I really don't get why you fucks jizz your pants over the build on the left constantly. I'm not a big Castle fan but every time the Blacksmith set comes up the major complaint I see is that it's too big, and that it's out of scale with other Lego castle sets. Even if it has less surface details it's still going to be bigger than Black Falcon's Fortress or whatever classic castle you've got as your main base.

If you're dead set on sticking to the 80s aesthetic you need to commit to both part/color usage and size. >>9876949 is right that the only proper comparison to the new Blacksmith is the old one (pic related) or other classic castle-era buildings like Guarded Inn. A 2021 set is not going to look good next to sets from the 80s even if you throw a coat of 1985 paint onto it.

tl;dr stop using that MOC as an example of what the Blacksmith shop should be like because neither of those two builds in your image are actual Classic Castle.

barracuda bay definitely represents the whole of pirates theme literally because that theme is basically just islands and ships, so they made an island ship. the blacksmith represents the castle theme more subtly, and in my opinion more tastefully, through all of the details. there isn't a thing in that set I can't see as being rooted in the lego castle theme or the danish roots the castle theme has always drawn on for its most iconic sets.

the 90th anniversary castle might be close to doing the entire theme some justice but by saying that I know im going to get some spicy takes by some particularly retarded individuals when no one here has had any real in-depth experience with it.

I don't like the texture of it, mostly the cutouts in the pointed edges of the tiles that let them attach to plates. I also don't like the size of each tile, makes the texture too coarse.
Slopes, plates, or smaller tiles would have been preferable.

picrel is the first "real" set I remember getting, which was for xmas, all the other stuff I had was hand-me-down from my brother. Set gets reposted a lot but it's such a classic and has absolutely influenced what I love today.

Best raise baseplate design, huge transparent panels / doors / domes, magnets, all accessories are chrome (weapons / crystal), crazy octagonal tubes / pipes

There were way less sets back in the 90's releasing compared to today, so it's not like there's a ton of options to gawk at.

There was the juniorization era as well where nothing was good, which also limits options.

A lot of the "zoomer" stuff is actually pretty good. The fantasy era of castle in the late 2000's is one of my favorites, with knights, trolls, dwarfs, reanimated armies, etc.

Sad fact is after that a vast majority of sets either became licensed or dust collectors, and most of city sets are just boring, and don't stand out really.

Lego has been letting connection-stressing builds in for years now, and even had some back in the 70s/early 80s before they cracked down on what an "illegal" build was (Pro-tip: There is no such thing as an illegal build when it comes to making MOCs)

The tread pieces are designed to be compatible with plates/tiles, they're the exact same size as a 1x3 plate/tile. It's even been used in an official set before (The water tower on the Detective's Office)

I don't see what is being disregarded here, he's using lego pieces and connecting them to other lego pieces with lego pieces. No glue, no tape, just how the pieces fit together based on how they are designed without any modifications to those designs.

Nice 4s, but when I said "fit together" I meant that the pieces actually connect and stay together (Emphasis on "connect", there is no connections being made by putting pieces side by side like that. I get that your autism does not like it when someone does something different from how it is normally done, but between this and that Danish thing from yesterday it's pretty clear that people in this thread have an issue with taking words literally.

When I am doing an MOC I want it to be playable. What I build can be visually appealing, whether in the familiar Lego style or a more realistic one used by many MOCers, but IMO Lego is a toy and must fulfill this function primarily. It should be functionally playable, building is part of the fun but so is playing with the finished product. At least in my opinion.

Of course there are people who push the medium to the extreme one way or another (see examples above or see people who make entirely functional multi speed transmissions out of Lego only, something entirely meant for function vs form) but I prefer somewhat of a middle ground, and it is why I leave some sets together.

In my opinion everything should be scaled to minifigures or microfigures. One of those two. Can a minifig use it? Yes? Then it is to scale and is a functional playset, regardless of whether I made the design or did Lego.
