How long do you let the masking fluid sit on the model? I tend to do masking and painting separately, but I am afraid of liquid mask residue.

it doesn't leave any residue(at least not vallejo), have had it on paint 30+ days no problem.
just don't let it get into seams or else you're in for a not so fun time.

I've had some residue after leaving it for about 24h (it was vallejo's).
Not sure what went wrong then. I didn't topcoat before using mask - but I assume you don't do this either.
Maybe the paint wasn't cured enough or something.

The RG Hi-Nu suffered from extreme scalping, especially since it launched while covid was still a thing. Every SEA and mexican on facebook gunpla trading groups were selling them at twice the price at launch. In fact, the groups have devolved into scalpfests. They were made for people to sell backlogs they didn't want to complete, but they all devolved into scalpers trying to rip people off.

Liquid mask residue is mask that didn't fully dry under an air-tight layer of dried mask. Just let it dry a few minutes and then remove it, no harm done.
Vallejo, MrHobby Neo and GSC masks are the safest masking liquids I have tried. Never had any problems with them.

The only thing I would be worried about is masking fluid not designed for plastic or long term application. A while ago I used some cheap nail art masking to mask joints. After a few days it dried and hardened to such a degree that I broke a chisel trying to dislodge it from the part.

What are the recommendations for beginner/mid-level airbrush(es)?

Also, has anyone of you got the portable compressors that you can recharge? Wondering how it fared with performance for painting gundam kits. Barbatos Rex seems to enjoy using them.

I was asking about that too. Over the last couple of years, the portable compressors were on the market and spraygunner's seemed to be super consistent, while the aliexpress variants seemed too low pressure to be worthwhile.

Or if they're garbage and I should just be looking at actual compressors instead.

You can get away with whatever, even with pic related if you screw a proper airbrush pressure regulator to it. It's all about convenience/noise level/replacement frequency.

Usually it goes like this:

different kind of sticky unlike normal "uncured" liquid mask.
wish I had a picture but it becomes really hard to clean off, and very sticky with the consistency of clumped paint, also smells like stale water except 10 times as disgusting.

I have a theory about the liquid mask going demonic, it might be a result of it being in contact with metal, maybe it's reacting with rust or something? gonna sacrifice one of my clips for this.

Noob who painted a big zam last thread here. I completely fucked up gluing the legs together and ruined a lot of the paint and even broke one of the pegs (lol). Doesn't help that they have such rudimentary connections.
Decided I'd model this one first then focus more on precision painting. Seems like it'd be less stressful for me. In hindsight these retro kits that can't be snap fitted probably weren't the best way to start off, but they're really cheap and I absolutely love the aesthetic.
Do you have any experiences with this painting method? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

i think they're a bit overpriced in america due to shipping half way across the world, pretty cheap if you live in europe though and excellent quality.

the only rechargable compressor that's worth its salt is the TM80S. barbatos rex reviewed it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XJevTtnHIY
you can get them on aliexpress. spraygunner also sells a rebrand of it in the usa, and greenstuffworld sell a rebrand of it in europe.
but if you have the space just get a normal compressor

It's not a mac valve, it's just a plug. The cup can be attached to either side (and the other hole is plugged).

paint durability is a meme, you're going to varnish them anyway. it's just primer and varnish where the durability matters, and honestly the varnish is the most important layer, since i started using acrylic-polyurethane varnish instead of normal acrylic varnish i haven't had a single issue with paint scratching off even around joints and even using shitty vallejo primer. when everything is cured it's easily durable enough unless you are throwing your kits at the wall

Not a WIP but you bring up a good point. Too much banter and not enough pics. Here's my StuG G from Dragon that I finished earlier this week. I used vallejo DG and holy shit its way too yellow. Currently working on a SdKFZ 251/22 (7.5cm PaK) also made by dragon.
Will post update pics since I have a long weekend off and want to make some good progress on it.
Ordered Tamiya dunkelgelb 2 which is much lighter and overall looks better

I found that only becomes a problem if you exclusively use cheap acrylic paints (aka Michaels/Walmart/etc). They tend to chip easily even with primer and varnish.

When I moved onto the 10mL jars from Tamiya and Mr. Hobby, I've had way better results. I was able to mask without paint chips, and paint in high wear spots without concern about rubbing or flaking.

I found GSC mask to be somewhat superior to Vallejo in terms of ease of application.

The krylon matte finish isn't bad. I've had good results with it. It's acrylic, and is pretty cheap. However, I use mr.hobby topcoats now a days. I would definitely use the krylon if I dont have any mr.hobby available

turned out alright, I have newfound trust in liquid mask.
one thing I learnt is to remove the residue "flakes" with masking tape and not try to rub it off, that shit is like gold leaf flakes and WILL try to attach itself to the surface and ruin your day.

Ehh, this krylon matte varnish has served me well from my experiences. Been using this stuff since 2015, and haven't had a problem with the matte varnish. I did move on to mr.hobby stuff though, will use Krylon if Mr.hobby isn't available or if Im running low.

Krylon is a mainstay in minis since forever.

A lot of the old guard have a shit ton of caps because we learned that most of the difference in spray paints are just the caps.
That changed in the 00s and early 10s when they started utilizing specially made caps because dumb people don't know how to use spray paints, which led to specialized caps that got costly for taggers and grafitti

It doesn't dissolve the plastic, rather it gets absorbed by some blends of ABS and turn them brittle/crumbly.

The hobby dept ones haven't used ABS outside of pre-jointed parts in a while. Only time will tell if their KPS blend has the same effect but probably not.

The candy toy kits however are still mostly ABS so the risk is there.

if it seeps into the cracks between parts and sits there it will weaken the plastic. i've cracked a part like this before because i forgot to separate the parts before panel lining after painting. if you do individual parts it won't hurt the plastic unless you leave a big puddle of it on there for some reason, it's only if it gets into cracks between parts

You could consider water-based caligraphy ink instead if he's not painting or topcoating. Use the same method, go over the lines with a paintbrush then wipe off the excess ink when it dries. The lines will stay there unless reactivated by water. No need to worry about freak plastic reactions or the kid getting high on enamel fumes, which isn't even the best kind of paint fumes.

Yeah they're pretty good, I love the glossy look on these retro kits. Got a dark yellow and brown to use on this bad boy next. I'm starting to get the hang of it. In hindsight, these boomer kits probably weren't the easiest place to start, but they're what inspired me to start painting in the first place

Eh the build was pretty basic but fun, it was nice to build something non-gundam. If you enjoyed Omegamon im sure you will enjoy Dukemon, cant speak to Wargreymon but it looks great. If you build Dukemon be sure to use the stand they give to support the big ass Shield, I didnt and the weight snapped his shoulder joint

I think it kinda looks mediocre, primarily due to proportions. the chest upwards is excellent, but the longer torso of the kit in combination with longer skirts and shorter legs makes it look like a manlet. the MG still is the best looking rendition. don't get me wrong; the RG is a substantially better kit than the other two. but purely based on aesthetics: MG > HG > RG

I got a basic green Haro from 2018 for about $5. I'm a little disappointed that I didn't get the newer one that opens up, because I didn't know it was available when I bought it. I'd really like making a life-sized Haro with my CNC router. Is he 27.3 cm, 30 cm, or 40 cm?

Yeah, I kinda thought that was weird. Haro was supposed to show how smart Amuro is. I can understand wanting to dial it back a bit, but making it a toy his dad bought when he was 8 and then just upgraded a bit is a pretty bad retcon. I generally prefer to just ignore that.

Yes. its a amazing build with good size to it, basically a small MG with more details. The engineering in the legs alone is damn impressive. Id say over $65 Is pushing it though

MSRP is ¥4500, so <$35 USD. factoring in shipping you shouldn't pay more than $45 for it before tax. It's not worth $50 or more. Just buy a better MG at that point.
