If no horses exist however, and someone said you can ride them like horses, the next question would be "What the hell is a horse?" This was actually done in a recent game where a foreigner had to ask "What's a chocobo?" when someone mentioned them.
If you refer to nonexistent animals in a world of fantasy animals, it's just bad writing. Makes sense for the player but not for the setting.

This is a series for children that makes things up with every new game. There's no depth to be had and there's no reason to try and make sense of it when the creators don't care themselves.
