As you can see, mentions to prior characters and pokemon integral to the overall journey are scarce to the degree that you could forget there are any at all! Everyone knows a good finale refuses to acknowledge the past!

Referencing past gens would be nostalgia pandering!!!! They all sucked anyways because they didn't have a kino badass ninja frog made just for Ash and a 2-dimensional love interest who is essentially how 14-year-olds envision ideal girlfriends
Ash beat the tar out of some idiot child who he has always beaten, but it was well animated. This means that Ash is competent now!
In fact, Ash still uses strategies that don't make any logistical sense (Even ignoring the games) and only win because the writers say so, clearly this means he is competent and going to win.
If he doesn't win? Obviously the most mature POSSIBLE course of action is to flood the internet with irrational rants about how a children's cartoon made for people who can barely read isn't crafting a decent ending.
