Doppelganger is written ドッペルゲンガー in nip, while the Pokemon's name is ゲンガー. It's extremely recognizable as just the word with the first few syllables chopped off. Meanwhile very few burgers recognized "Gengar" as coming from doppelganger until they read it somewhere. It really should've been spelled Ganger in the west.

Gengar's japanese name is literally Ghost.
Anything is better than that. I think a name based on the cheshire cat would be better than doppelganger though.
