Part of why I love Venusaur so much is because it's so versatile, so it can run a lot of things fairly well. My Venusaur is actually from my Y playthrough, and I used a Gold Cap to allow me to use him competitively (thanks GF). He was also the sole survivor of my Nuzlocke run in Y, so even in the main game he was pretty frickin' tough.
Leech Seed is a very useful tool, but I’ve found that my big leafy buddy is able to survive just about any attack even without it. Earthquake allows me to actually fight back against Steel Types (such as Heatran, Shitcario, Magnezone/ton, and Mawile, who it completely dominates), Poison Types (such as Muk, Specially Defensive Toxapex, Salazzle, and especially Gengar now that it lost Levitate), and Fire Types (Charizard X is the most notable example but Earthquake also lets me beat many other fire types, like Blaziken, Infernape after I’ve baited out it’s Z-Crystal, Torkoal, and more). Without Earthquake I wouldn’t have won nearly as much as I have with him, and that’s only for the Battle Spot: I originally made this set for OU and it’s worked even better there as it completely shuts down Calm Mind Magearna and allows me to punish roosters such as Zapdos. Compared to a little bit a chip damage and more healing it’s a negligible loss since Earthquake covers so many of his bases. It’s also quite thematic as well in my opinion, which is a double bonus.
If you want to try his set I'm happy to share it (pic related here due to text limit). I hope my buddy serves you just as well as he's served me!
