The circular shape makes for a cohesive and tightly-knit world that no other region has. There are no awkward dead ends or wasted spaces that you passed through once and never came back for again. Every location in Unova serves a purpose. It's extremely cozy.
Critics often point out that it's "linear" but so what? Every Pokemon game is linear. Sure, in some earlier games you could defeat a gym or two in a different order but does it really matter? At the end of the day you're still going to have to backtrack and then travel the same exact path as everyone else, be it Kanto or Kalos, so why not embrace the linearity and craft a region with this specifically in mind? This is what gen 5 did and it's fantastic.
