The final Pokémon that can be found on Route 101 is Wurmple, a particular Pokémon in that it has a bisected evolution line. While not the most auspicious little creature to catch and raise, this tiny horned caterpillar actually does possess more potential than the average Pokemon player typically gives it credit for. Its personality value determines whether it will evolve into Silcoon or Cascoon at level 7, and it evolves once more into Beautifly or Dustox at level 10, respectively.
Beautifly is perceived as a weaker bug/flying type Pokemon, and with its sub optimal speed stat and weak defenses, there is truth to this. However, Beautifly does have some redeeming strong points that can make it quite usable in battle. It learns Stun Spore at level 17, and while it's not the most accurate move (75%), this move can give Beautifly and its fellow teammates the edge in battle by crippling their opponents speed to 1/4 its original value (50% after Gen VI) and giving them a 1/4 chance to be unable to move any given turn. Although this alone may not seem like much, Beautifly also has access to auxiliary moves in Attract and Morning Sun. Combined with paralysis, Beautifly actually has the potential for some longevity. This still may not seem sufficient for players, however, Beautifly can also cap off its moveset with the move Silver Wind, a 60 base power damaging move that has a 10% chance to boost each of the user's stages by one. Combined with its Swarm ability which raises bug moves when in low health, Beautifly can actually both cripple and take down threats that don't have obvious type advantages against it. It can additionally swap out Morning Sun for something like Giga Drain to deal with those pesky rock types, and it also has access to Psychic, another useful coverage move. If you like Beautifly, take heart, it is far from unusable! (Part 6/???)
