>>41217142I think you're listening too much to shitposters on /vp/. Saying Pokemon died in Gen 6 is an exaggeration, but what isn't an exaggeration is that it ended the general progression of improved quality the sprite based games had. Personal preferences obviously vary, but the gens overall got better from 1 to 5. Then the jump to 3D happens and suddenly you have a game that seems like a step back from Gen 5, and arguably Gen 4 as well.
Now here's the part where context is most important. The biggest failure of Gen 6 was not in the initial release of X and Y. Most people were understanding of how much work the transition to 3D was. Where Gen 6 earned its negative reputation was the FOLLOW THROUGH, namely ORAS as the gen's remakes and a lack of a Z version. I would say ORAS was the bigger sin, since unlike the Gen 1 and 2 remakes it actually removed content from the gen (Battle Frontier, Game Corner, etc.) and didn't add enough to make up for those and the general complaints people had already. The lack of a Z version was also devastating for the gen's legacy though because unlike so many gens before the third version didn't save it. Think about how different people would remember Gen 3 without Emerald or Gen 4 without Platinum. It never got its second shot which is a shame because there were a lot of good things about it (more so than Gen 8 at the moment I'd say).
