It was Kecleon, the chameleon Pokemon. It has great Special Defense, good enough Attack, decent move access, and a quite useful ability at that in Color Change.
Inside the Safari Zone you can get the TM Solarbeam if you have Surf and the Macho Bike in Area 3. The Safari Zone is mainly an area to catch some older faces:
Pikachu
Doduo/Dodrio: Fairly fast and powerful
Natu: Defensive
Wobbuffet: Troll; not for in-game (your Lavaridge Egg turns into its pre-evolution Wynaut)
Rhyhorn: Strong Kaiju
Pinsir: Good Attack/Defense
Heracross: Great attacking bug/fighting type
Phanpy: Very fair ground type with good Attack and Defense
Psyduck (Surf): Better than it gets credit for
There are also a lot of old Johto Pokemon to be caught here in the expanded areas of the postgame.
If we surf southward off of Route 121 we can access Mt. Pyre!
