You also had the show and commercials to let you know what was going on. Phone's weren't as good, mobile games weren't really a thing, so the lines at gamestop, sears, and Toys R Us were out the street with kids and families wanting to buy Gameboys.
Now we get the entire game leaked and pirated a week prior to release and know whats going to be on it and how the dex/gimmicks work. Throw in some trash poketuber opinions and idiotic hype over a rumor or two and people get let down easier, or think a game sucks way worse than it actually does.
