>Crystal
Much like any other 3rd version after it, its the definitive way to experience the corresponding generation with nothing but extra features and improvements, even some SP battle glitches were addressed in Crystal. The Suicune sub-plot is really basic but neat enough to get a roaming pokemon a lot easier. New/revamped areas, new learnesets for pokemon, animated sprites, all the good shit but i think the highlight feature is the Battle Tower/ GB Mobile System. A tiny game for handhelds being able to connect online in 1999 is no small feat.
>Remakes
These are, by far, par none, the best damn remakes in the entire franchise. You can really tell they went for both authenticity to the original and modernization of the day's standarts. Yes, they're not a 1:1 recreation but they're still real faithful to the real thing. The most baffling thing of all is that there's EVEN MORE content in those remakes which elevate them to this top tier status. The more linear flow of progression is slightly off-putting but it at least stays well within the theme of a summer time adventure steeped into traditional myths and legends. "One step forwards two steps back" ? No, these remakes dont even take steps they just ride the hype train and go full speed.
>Conclusion
This might sound underwhelming but there's no "best version" its only a matter of preference. You want to experience gen 2 in its "raw" and original way? Crystal is a great game. You want a more modern take with some convinient features and a bigger pokemon roster, the remakes are for you then. Whats certain is that if you pick either version, you get to experience one of the best if not the best generation of games in the series.
