Ignoring the competitive scene, it felt like a step back in almost every way. The worst Pokemon designs thus far, eye strainingly-bad sprite graphics that looked terrible in 3D environments, and a really linear and forced story. (Which while good, I felt like they spent too much time on it and it broke up the gameplay way too much and took too much focus off of my fun adventure with my Pokemon.)
This is a major improvement in pretty much every area, minus the end game. Loving the game so far.
