What we know and speculate:

>fans speculate jolteon, flareon, and vaporeon were burned and killed in the tower before being revived (reincarnated?) into the legendary beasts
For the longest time, this could have been somewhat disproved because of the fact Flareon could not get burned or even take damage from fire due to its Flash Fire ability.
5th gen came along with hidden abilities and gave Flareon Guts, thus, allowing Flareon to take damage from fire. Did Gamefreak purposely give Flareon Guts because they found a small home in their lore's story?

At first, I thought that Guts was a completely random ability because most Eeveelutions hidden abilities correspond to their type, but if you look at the other original Eeveelutions' hidden abilities (Quick Feet, Hydration), they both have something to do with status effects -- burn being one of them.
AND THEN, the Legendary Beasts' hidden abilities are the exaxt same as the Eeveelutions' original abilities (Volt Absorb, Water Absorb, Flash Fire). It can't be just coincidence
