I don't like the pokemon either, most of them look like uncanny valley creatures, especially the ones without fur. And the humour seems to be typical G/PG-13 stuff. I really doubt anything fresh or worthwhile is going to come of this, but I'm sure the critics will rave at the diversity hire cast.
Three quarters of the battle for selling a film to the public these days is in advertising, and with a name like Pokemon that's already won. All that's left are snazzy enough effects to keep butts in seats, one or two zinger lines for people to repeat to each other and what I'd call the Herding Effect; so long as about half of the well known critics and tv hosts give the film a positive review, the public will be enamoured.
