The constant losses start the take a toe and the character's personally takes a turn for the worse. He starts becoming more and more drastic measures to win such as purposely sabotaging MC's Pokemon before a battle, (such as they'll be affected by a status aliment before the match starts) until he starts to outright resent the MC due to MC having plot armor and shit (you know, typical "chosen one" and every one loves him/her) This all ends up with rival joining the villainous team due to absolutely loathing the MC at this point and also to get revenge on the box legend. After one final battle, and into the postgame, rival starts feeling immense guilt over his actions and becomes the atoner.
>PartnerA Burmy with its gender hidden that will evolve into one of the three Wormadams depending on specifc quizzes answered in certain locations. If none of the quizzes are taken, it will evolve into a Mothim

Sixth Battle (as Evil Team Admin this is when he's really desperate. He steals your bag+bracelet so you can't use items in battle nor can you mega evolve/use Z-Crystals, also he has an item so that all of his Pokemon are mega evolved)
