There's something about the tone, setting, and pacing that's very conducive to headcanons/making your own day-by-day story as you play. It gave me the adventure and freedom I needed during my school days, especially as a kid with a rich imagination.
And with the old EV mechanics, you could actually train for forever and still feel like your pokemon were getting stronger. Added a lot of pressure to rechallenging classmates.
