Like you said, you could see this even in Gen 5 with Serperior not having real leaves, Conkeldurr not having proper muscle definition, etc. There were some that still adhered to the old design philosophy in ways that you basically don't see anymore at all, like Braviary still having well-defined feathers and talons, but it was kind of the start of things going wrong.
Like if you go on Showdown and throw Fearow out of a Pokeball it's hilarious. This thing doesn't even look like it belongs to the same series anymore. Even smth like Arcanine or Zapdos kind of gives you whiplash
