While I understand that socialism and liberalism refer to two different things, term left-wing was literally created to describe liberals during the French Revolution, as at the time the liberals (who supported overthrowing the monarchy) sat on the LEFT of the French parliament, while conservatives (who supported the monarchy) sat on the RIGHT. The basic ideals of liberalism (to reference the French Revolution again, “liberte, egalite, fraternite”) are also the same values held by leftists (the right of the individual to do what he pleases, belief in universal human equality, and internationalism/cosmopolitanism). The difference is of DEGREE, not of KIND. The main difference between a socialist and a liberal is to what extreme he will go to pursue his ideology (revolution and political violence vs elections and protests, basically).
