Because Ash stopped being a consistent character from OS-DP, with every series fr BW onwards radically swinging from one extreme to the other.
Not to mention, the show has also tried to distance itself from continuity - meaning Ash's presence was really holding them back.
They are going for a clean slate, and if new protagonists fail, they'll make new ones.
This is Ash's swan song, whether you like it or not. Maybe we'll get some Pokemon Chronicles episodes for the 30th or 35th anniversary.
