I think people just stopped caring about Tobias as soon as S*rena even appeared on the scene even with the subplot. Even Iris, Cameron, Tracey and Max don't get this much hate compared to her nowadays. At this point, the whole "S*rena is the most hated Ashnime character of all time" might actually be true at this rate.

Always having a cute female companion for the main character is eye candy. The way Ash/Misty were written in portrayed in the OS was absolutely meant to show two kids who are crushing on one another, though. The writers weren't even subtle about it - Tracy goes into exposition mode in that Nidoran episode and tells the audience what's been happening.

In the case of MPM, it's a strong possibility that it's just a wink to the shippers. Outside of ep 2, you have to actually be looking for the hints to see them.

it's good to be mad about it, because that had ripple effects going forward.

Not all of Ash's reserves are going to get featured, and MPM looks the way it does because they needed a vehicle to say goodbye to various Ash mons to begin with.

Journeys and the faggots who enabled them (people who celebrated the reserves not being used in PWC and Masters 8) are absolutely to blame.

Exactly. The show never wants to confirm any shipping (maybe a result of death threats from Armourfags over the years) so they just play loose with it.

Journeys ended with TRio telling Giovanni that they would capture Pikachu. A world champion Mon getting stolen by a criminal group would've been a better subplot than Latias.

I don't think it's so much about not wanting to confirm shipping as it is about wanting to stay in the same lane.

The OS was clearly showing that there was some sort of attraction between the two. Misty comes to terms with it in the second movie. Ash was always a little more nebulous about it, but there were still signs.

But I think the telling thing was the decision of who to drop from the show after Johto - Misty or Team Rocket. Keeping Team Rocket preserved the longevity of the concept (20+ years later and the toy commercial is still on!). Keeping Misty, on the other hand, probably would have required some sort of payoff on the romance angle, which means aging the characters up. It would have been a more concise and better defined story, that isn't a necessity for what is ultimately a marketing tool.

Sad thing is there was probably a way to do both things, but that would have required moving on from Ash as the lead character - which would have admittedly been a risk. Ultimately they might have actually been better off doing that, though. The reset of his personality in BW, plus the introduction of a similar personality type to Misty (minus the romantic undertones to the relationship), seemed to be an attempt to recreate aspects of the OS. But from how folks talk about it here, it seems like the results of BW (and subsequent resets) have been mixed at best.

This is actually a fascinating idea. It was basically just one line in Pokemon Red/Blue, but you see it sketched out like that, and all of a sudden my curiosity is piqued.

Some anon a few weeks back was commenting about how much TPCI has left on the table in terms of potential content because they've because of cautious and artificial constraints put on the show.

Marvel and Star Wars have multiple overlapping stories going all at once - Pokemon with all its regions/different bad guy teams could do something along those lines if they really wanted to. They've got an expansive universe to work in with the ability to write in seemingly whatever type of magical creates/regions they need to, but they're just not doing it.

A few years ago Hillary Duff was attached to a Lizzie McGuire reboot that didn't ultimately get off the ground because Disney wanted a very sanitized version of a young adult's life, while she was more interested in seeing something that actually reflected where a 30ish year old woman might actually be in life. Of course, a Google search now indicates that Disney might have come around to her way of thinking. Similarly, the resurgence of Avatar during the pandemic actually got the ball rolling on a direct sequel to the original series - folks finally get to see Aang/Katara/Sokka/Toph progress in life.

You gotta wonder if TPCI is hamstringing themselves in similar fashion by not being willing to consider anything outside of the kids demographic. I have no idea if the audience is actually there for something that would appeal to older fans who grew up with the show, and my opinion is certainly no substitute for a market study, but I'd certainly give it a shot.

Real talk though - that was such a heartbreaking scenario for a character in a kid's show that I didn't quite grasp at the time, being a kid myself. It hits a lot different once you start meeting people in similar situations of responsibility because of life circumstance.

Also, Misty lauding her own beauty all the time was mostly played for laughs, but then as you get older and put the dots together, you realize it's supposed to be a defense mechanism for the deep-seated inferiority complex instilled in her by her older sisters.

The OS had some subtly heavy backstory.

I think you're partially right - people are absolutely playing the games for the Pokemon. That backstory about Professor Oak and Agatha seems like great fodder for TV, but I'd never play a game for that alone.

But with the anime, at least speaking as someone from the older generation of fans, we're definitely here for the characters.

Is this sort of thing a concern for anipoke leakers? Discord and Twitter both have phone verification and if you're in the US law enforcement can identify you based on devices fairly easily.
The Pokemon company has supoena the identities of game leakers before but not sure about anime leakers

Personally I think it's far more likely for Misty/Brock to have another goodbye scene than for them to stick around to the very end of the episode. I really don't know why people find this shocking and why that one anon keeps accusing others of being "Scott" if they point this out. Ash having alone time with his pokemon, pikachu and final talk with Gary before the credits roll seems a predictable course of events. Any companion wold detract.

Of course, I'd be happier if Ash did walk off into the sunset with Misty/Brock, I don't expect it. Would love to be wrong.

Brock has a more realistic reason, if this "endless summer" is coming to an end, he might want to go back to pursuing his doctor dream.

Misty has no reason. Her sisters are covering the gym and she's on her own journey now. Her goal to become a strong water trainer (similar to Lorelei/Prima mentioned in Orange Islands) meaning she can keep on going, possibly with Ash as its similar to "Pokemon Master".

Only reason I'd see them do otherwise is for status quo reasons as Gen 2 games have Misty still as gym leader.

In that video preview in the train station they are highlighted sequentially with with Professor Oak, Gary, and Delia, who are all appearing in the final episode. It's not impossible that they part ways before reaching Pallet, but no way they aren't appearing at all.

the yuyama interview said they had an ending already in made for Ash and needed a series(MPM) to go with it the first ep of MPM did not have b or m and the last one will not either, because they were already planned before hand.

I think they're gone because ending the show with Ash solo just makes sense. The anime will end the way it started. Ash, Oak, Delia, Gary...and then Ash alone (with Ho-oh assumingly).

Nah. 100+ episodes of MPM would've gotten old fast; we know this because just look at the Johto years. Boring filler and Misty/Brock might as well not even exist because of how irrelevant their roles were in episodes.

It's not impossible that he goes on a solo journey at the end, but it seems funny to me that there are a few people ("many") taking the handful of new 1 second clips from ep 11 as a sign that Misty and Brock won't be there. Confirmation bias?

They're two of the five characters highlighted in headshots while saying "Satoshi" with Oak, Gary, and Delia, all three of whom are going to be in Pallet for the finale. I suppose it's possible that Misty and Brock could part ways in the episode, but there's nothing pointing to them being absent entirely right now.

I'm sad to see Ash go but I don't think it's doom for the anime like what some others are saying. It can be argued that Ash outwore his welcome long ago and if anything, this should have happened sooner and not now. Plus, PM2023 does have things going for it, so as long as it plays it cards right the anime still has a bright future even without Ash.

Zoomies like you ruined this franchise. Now it's literally a souless anime even without Ash. Plus it now joins with other anime in the 21st Century as in when the anime series end, the next anime is a different one with a different protag.

The only remaining are those kids anime such as Doraemon, Sazae-San, Chibi Maruko Chan etc whose protags don't get replaced. The reason they are still basically alive is because they teach people life skills for each generation of kids.
