It's an MMO skinned to be Pokemon, not a Pokemon MMO. No?, people don't play the games because of the story, they play because they want to catch and train monsters, and see them grow and battle, not because they want a good story, just look at pokemon go, it has no story, just finding and capturing pokemon, and it was a HUGE success.
