Like Pokemon, its heyday is over, but it's still the largest and most successful MMORPG on the market - hell, the highest grossing game of all time - and has been since the decline of EQ. Pokemon is a massive IP, don't get me wrong, but behemoths like Star Wars and The Elder Scrolls have been forced to their knees because they can't compete with WoW's black-hole-esque pull.
In my opinion, the only reason that Blizzard hasn't returned to the RTS genre for Warcraft is because WoW just fucking prints money. They don't give a shit about lore, having played since BC the retcons are all over the fucking place. Their upcoming expansion is literally a time-travel-alternate-universe that sounds like something straight out of a fat teenage wastrel's fanfiction and shits all over your lore. WoW even has a Pokemon minigame with almost as many critters to collect (~600 iirc) to waste even more of your fucking time.
I have a hard time believing that a Pokemon MMO would even get that big unless devs unlocked that crack-candy formula that made WoW such a titanic IP, while still being fresh, new, and innovative in the already oversaturated MMO market. That's basically asking for a rainbow unicorn to prance into your office and drop a giant golden load onto your keyboard.
That and MMO consumers and single-player turn-based strategy consumers are usually different animals.
