This is probably one of the reasons the real Hatter looks like a classical fae-alien thing. Witches could also change people's appearance around, so it might also be inspired by that (the Witch using it's magic to shapeshift into a more beautiful form).
While answering the inspiration behind it is easy though, I have to admit that I'm not entirely sure why Hatterene mimics things in-universe. Perhaps they're trying to become closer to humans or better understand our behavior? Or maybe they wish to lure unwary folks deeper into the woods for unknown reasons. Could be interesting to think about. It's always fun when you have some answers, but not all of them.
