I mean it's a single player Pokemon game so the mechanics are limited to 1v1 turn based moves so there's a limited amount of ways for a rom hacker to make the battles more complex. The battles should've at least been always doubles, with the opponent having support moves such as helping hand, quash, follow me, etc.
