Glalie is in my top 10 fav Pokémon but it’s stats make no sense and it’s abilities are very underwhelming.
I guess the joke is that it’s a ball, so it’s stats are completely equal?
Anyways after playing ORAS and using its mega I even changed my mind on Megas as a whole: they should exist to help Pokémon like Glalie, who are bad.

But now megas are gone, and it may not even appear in Swosh. Hurray.

Shedinja memes on some important battles pretty hard if you take out the problem mons first (the AI will switch into them against it so they're easy to find). I managed to carry one through a whole Nuzlocke.
Nincada's got the absolute slowest exp growth at low levels though. I know the pain.

Liepard is probably the worst Unova mon to use ingame besides the stuff that's right at the very end. When Patrat and Lillipup with early Bite and Crunch are better Dark types than the actual Dark type that barely gets anything, that's sad.

Both Noivern and Dragalge disappointed me. Fairy just made Dragon pretty bad unless you're really really strong. Noivern took forever to evolve in UM and the typing is worse than Crobat, which you get a lot quicker, while Dragalge doesn't even resist Fairy as a Poison type, which you fucking want, and is too slow, too weak (without Adaptability), and not bulky enough.

Snivy disappointed me in BW, they gave it nothing to work with

And finally, there was a hack called Pokemon Obsidian iirc which had its own dex superimposed upon Ruby's real Pokedex. The Duskull hack was this ghost penguin that seemingly never evolved, so I was disappointed I raised it past level 40 with nothing to show for it.

Typhlosion was really disappointing. Only learned Fire moves and very few non-stab moves. And the ones it does learn like Dig and Thunderpunch don't do much because its Attack stat sucks. It's even more disappointing than Meganium.

Blitzle died to everything in my BW run till I boxed it (which made finding a shiny Zebstrika later in the run all the more painful). I never used Ekans/Arbok either and tried to use one in US but I had to box that and all.

Has anyone used this guy in B/W?
Considering my water type options and it's between this and Seismitoad. I'm sure Seismitoad is far better, but it's fun to try something different.

The worst starter I've ever used, worse than Meganium and Serperior. Changing into a ghost type does it no favors in a region where everything is dark type, the hardest hitting moves it has until it reaches its final form are Pluck and Razor Leaf, it's so slow that it never gets to go first, it's so weak that it can't one-shot anything, and its defenses are so low that it will almost always faint before it knocks out even a single Pokemon. And it's ugly. Out of all the Pokemon on my original Sun team, all of them were MVPs except for Decidueye and Kommo-o.

I used an Adaptability Basculin with Aqua Jet in a Nuzlocke once. It happened to be Adamant, and it was a good way of quickly dispatching threats, just don't count on it to take a hit. Only send it in if you're sure you can KO with it. Seismitoad is probably more reliable all-around.

It's a trade off for stone evos, considering you can evolve them any time you want. Sure you could go for the instant stat boost, but if you hold off on evolving it, it can learn some better moves that it wouldn't have the opportunity to learn when fully evolved. I think it's fine design and lets players make a choice of what's more important for their specific team build.

Eh? Snowslash isn't bad at all. I played around with it and it was pretty tanky and hit quite hard. My only issue is they treat it like a stone evo mon and it doesn't learn much moves when you evolve it. Otherwise Icicle Spear and Iron Head does plenty and it resists a whole bunch of things. Earthquake somehow did not OHKO a 4x weak Alolan Golem (not even close actually), but Snowslash still came up at top.

If you want to be pedantic about it, technically there can only be one MVP on a sports team, but my point is that four of the Pokemon I used never let me down and always felt like a crucial part of my team.

It's fine design when you know about it beforehand, but for a child playing the first games in the series that shit made no sense. They should have made it abundantly clear that stone evolution was a double-edged sword. Throw in a line about it stunting their growth or making it harder for them to learn new moves or something.

Serperior is a bit of a strange mon to use. I used it in almost every playthrough and it can sweep through the entire League or important matches by itself with Coil + Leaf Blade/Return, which the other two starters cannot even hope for. Otherwise for random mook battles it won't be doing much except on things where it has obvious type advantages. Being a fast tank is surprisingly helpful at times, but that typing and lack of coverage can be hindering. It's more apparent in B2W2 where Team Plasma grunts use more poison types like Golbat or Weezing. It's intended for expert play but it pays off very well and I haven't ever boxed it due to that. But yeah, sometimes just using something that hits hard immediately may be better, but I found Unova to be lacking that most of the time.

There are not enough Water mons in the vanilla BW playthrough. If you did not play Samurott, it isn't easy to find much better ones. You either get the monkey, Jellicent, Seismitoad, or this, I think. I played Jellicent on a run with Serperior and I guess having a large movepool and bulk was nice. Basculin looks like it hits hard and is surprisingly fast, so I think it isn't that bad.

I think I want to try Decidueye and see for myself. I've only picked Primarina and she did well. I also suspect this is because some of the important battles have Pokemon being EVd with high IVs in the SM series, which is unfair considering most casual players won't be allocating their EVs properly in single player campaign.

The whole line has some weird stat distribution. It starts off with high HP and average everything else as Rowet, all-around average but slow as Dartrix, and becomes a slow frail mixed attacker (with a little bit of special bulk) as Decidueye. Throughout my whole run, it just felt like it was getting worse and worse. The only shining moment I remember it having was making Totem Lurantis easier.

Maybe if you get one with better IVs/nature than mine, actually bother to EV train it properly, and use Pokemon Refresh, it will actually work for you. But for me, I didn't bother with any of that stuff and the rest of my team was still able to perform excellently. Decidueye clearly had the hardest time against almost anything, and it was almost never safe to switch it in.

Yup.

Golisopod worked well for me. In game, it's really simple to work his ability to your advantage, especially when you can just heal him up with potions for multiple First Impressions. All you really need is that and any combination of, Aqua Jet, Liquidation, Leech Life, or Sucker Punch, and he becomes pretty strong as long as you keep him away from counters (but it's not like in-game trainers ever strategize or switch their own Pokemon against you for the most part, so doing so is easy). The ONLY frustrating thing about Emergency Exit in a story playthrough is that it ends battles with wild Pokemon, so you have to keep that in mind a lot.

It's not very well known, but you can get a Slugma egg before you even fight Falkner in HGSS. That said, you know how people complain about it being one of the few Johtomons confined to Kanto? This is one of those mons that wouldn't make a difference if it was in Johto, nobody would likely use it anyway.
I tried to make it work as a replacement starter, but its stats are physically painful to look at, gets no moves and takes forever to evolve. Got past Pryce before giving up on it, sorry.

I actually expected this to be worse. The main issue was taking a bit of time to learn Ember and then again when evolving really late. Maybe it's because mine was Modest and I gave it Fire Blast early so it was less shit. Also I was using Kingdra as my Water type so it was better to use Magcargo against the mandatory Charizard fights since both have a Dragon move.

Pretty much every single Normal/Flying type that doesn't at least lose that typing when they evolve. Zero coverage, stuck with Gust most of the time, best attack tends to be a 2 turn chargeup, no variation, no fun.

Incineroar is okay in SM. Frail as fuck until the final stage. Incineroar is 100% better in USUM however because of the move tutors and with the other changes to the game (mainly Hala being replaced by Molayne) it is just better there overall. Primarina is still the best but it's a closer gap.

Treecko in RSE is the worst starter hands down. Being stuck with Absorb until almost lv30 was a torture, and Leaf Blade is mediocre compared to what Swampert and Blaziken get.

Roggenrola learns nothing except for Rock moves and is painfully slow in a region where every other mon seems to have a flinching move.

Cubchoo comes too late, has underwhelming stats and a shallow movepool.

I tried using Flareon for the first time in BW2 where it finally got a bunch of cool moves, but the awful stat spread really does bring that mon down.

These are the ones that stuck me the most.

Might get some shit for this, but this guy for me.

I remember being mega butthurt over Infernape being another fire/fighting type, so for once I didn't pick fire. I was pretty excited by Empoleon's typing too.

But then...he just felt so underwhelming. Any time I got to a difficult point in the game I always felt like the battle would be easier with Infernape. Like the game was designed for you to pick him (especially since there were no other fire types.) Once he was fully evolved, Empoleon wasn't awful...but he never really impressed me.

Later I raised up an Infernape I got on the GTS and had a lot of fun with him. He's one of my favorites to use competitively now.

Within an in-game b/w run it’s actually ridiculously strong with a number of solid abilities and high power attacking moves.

It’s mainly because it doesn’t evolve, is decidedly kinda plain and is a pure water type that most would overlook it in an ingame run.

I always pick Piplup but the problem is they make it too reliant on TMs/HMs. The other starters naturally learn some nice moves like Earthquake, Seed Bomb, Crunch on Torterra or Close Combat and Flamethrower and such on Infernape, but Empoleon is stuck with some very questionable moves for a long while. It has Fury Attack of all things, and evolving will get it Aqua Jet, Mist, Drill Peck (at a high level)... which are not too effective for it. What's worse is that Gamefreak thinks it is a physical Pokemon despite its higher special attack and all it gets are physical moves that are not Bubblebeam or Brine. You'll have to use that Ice Beam or Flash Cannon TM on it for it to even have a decent attacking move, although I suppose Surf is helpful. Also despite its Pokedex entry it felt pretty slow. I wish they designed its natural moveset more to be useful in-game like Torterra's or Infernape's. Yeah, Piplup is not awful but I kind of have to try to get it to work, but otherwise it is the starter I pick when I play Sinnoh games most of the time.

You could just run Surf and if you want Waterfall. You don't really need any other Hms nor are forced to use them. The other HMs like Cut or Strength can go on other mons. Cut as an HM was just terrible. The other two/three slots often get used for things like Ice Beam/Grass Knot/Flash Cannon or Aqua Jet really, and even then Flash Cannon isn't that useful offensively and only provides you coverage vs Ice mons.

I just dragged this motherfucker tooth and nail through an Emerald run, absolutely miserable. I love Magcargo but fuck me it dies to everything and can hardly net a kill, basically cannot survive a turn on the battlefield in any situation. THIS wins my biggest disappointment

In the manual, the evolution stones are listed as "mystery items" with "a connection to x pokemon" where x is the appropriate type (or ? in the Moon Stone's case).
It could not be less helpful.

Acquire Tyrouge AFTER 8 BADGES, then deal with that stat balancing act, all for LOL NO MOVES. It was so disheartening that I haven't touched that run since. Was right at victory road, too.

I remember using Flareon in an old Yellow playthrough, giving it Body Slam and wrecking everything.

Trying to use this in my first ever playthrough was a nightmare. I went through the entire Seafoam Island route levelling it, then ditched it shortly after Blaine.

Fuck, it's the same thing with Rampardos.
Yeah it can hit hard, but it's too slow to take advantage of its power, has no defenses to withstand and attack to fight back, AND it has a shit-load of weaknesses.
It's like they wanted it to fail.
Also it's ugly, and not in a cool, monstrous way.

I'll admit I didn't give them the time they deserved.
The one I played with the most is probably Porygon Z due to its stupid spatk followed by Dusknoir but still there isn't a lot going on with them.
