This is one of the biggest misconceptions that we have today. All types being equal only favors dual types, and even then, those dual types with actually good combinations, greatly limiting your viable options.
For example, compare Marowak with its alola version. A mono-ground type is fucking useless, there's literally no use for it.
Another example: Muk and its alola version. The latter has no reason to exist.
Now, if attacking types were still divided, Muk for example would only use poison offensively. Do you need psychic immunity? Then go with alola Muk. If you'd rather get fighting and bug resistences, then go with regular Muk. When you narrow down your decisions to defensive typings, you'll get much more options.
On Marowak, without Flare Blitz the alola one is much closer to the kanto one. I've honestly thought a bit and couldn't predict which one would be better.
But the way it's now, the alola version wins due to its offensive advantage.
Smeargle was just for breeding. Gimmicks by regular pokemon aren't as intrusive as gimmicks by the system itself. Now every single team that I make, I have to dedicade a slot for a mega and another for a Z-move, and even if I try to be creative, the options between those gimmicks are extremely limited.
tl;dr types not being equal means more choices in team composition as there's almost never a clear winner
