Of course there is the fact that Professor Oak said in the anime that Ash and Gary were the only two trainers to be successful, I don't believe this was said considering it was a dub and not the original japanese.
I bet Red saved Ash from Gary's bullying and that is why Ash tries to look like Red.
Anyways it is something to consider since it covers the 4 kids from Pallet Town and can ties some things together
